Uncovered Truths Of The Inequalities Encountered By Female Educators, Rachel Katoll Dec 2018

Uncovered Truths Of The Inequalities Encountered By Female Educators, Rachel Katoll

Undergraduate Voices

This paper was conducted to illustrate the paradox of a female dominated field praising male educators over their female counterparts. This is proven to be the case through workplace mistreatment, professional growth opportunities, and struggles encountered through recruitment. Through this paper, I evaluate the tear down of female educators as men become the prioritized employee. The information drawn together throughout this paper came from a collection of online sources, personal interviews, and articles.

Service-Learning: A Powerful Pedagogy For Promoting Academic Success Among Students Of Color, Michelle C. Sterk Barrett, Isabelle Jenkins

Scholarship and Professional Writing from the J.D. Power Center

This article discusses a mixed-methods study that investigated the service-learning experiences of students of color at College of the Holy Cross to better understand how service-learning may be an effective pedagogical tool for reducing cultural dissonance and addressing related achievement gaps. Quantitative data were collected from over 1,500 students who had enrolled in 59 different service-learning classes. In addition, interviews were conducted with 13 students of color who had participated in service-learning. Findings indicated that students’ service-learning experiences paralleled study participants’ descriptions of how they learned most effectively. Furthermore, the findings suggest that service-learning may resonate for students of color …

Rwu's Year In Review, Jill Rodrigues, Justin Wilder, Juan Siliezar, Edward Fitzpatrick

Featured News Story

Despite an unexpected loss, this was a great year of progress for Roger Williams University. This was the year we mourned the passing of our beloved president; but from grief, we found inspiration in his legacy to renew an even stronger commitment to empowering students to use their knowledge and skills toward making a positive impact in local and global communities. It also heralded many successes, from state-of-the-art educational facilities added to campus to the first-ever alumnus leading the Board of Trustees, an exciting, new look for the Hawk, and a reinvented mission and identity for University College. As 2018 …

Efl Teachers’ Preparation And Beliefs In Niger, Peter Wiens, Bong Gee Jang, Katrina Liu, Billa Anassour, April Smith

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research

Niger is a French-speaking country with a history of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in its middle and high schools. The teachers providing instruction in these programs have been trained in different ways including university-based programs, out of country programs, or no training at all. This study sought to examine the beliefs of Nigerien EFL teachers and analyze the relationship between their beliefs and their training. All EFL teachers in Niger were surveyed to understand their beliefs related to teaching. We found that training was related to teacher beliefs. As Niger determines how best to allocate its limited …

Biology Faculty Publications

Afterschool interventions in STEM are linked to learning gains during the school day. These opportunities engage and excite students about STEM concepts since they observe a more hands-on, project-oriented approach. Often these opportunities for afterschool interventions are infrequent in nature and leave gaps for students in their maturation and understanding. Herein we describe the first report of an afterschool intervention, named NE STEM 4U, targeting socioeconomically disadvantaged middle school youth via a twice weekly, year-long intervention, studied across two years. We assessed the impact of this program on i.) short-term, individual student gains in STEM content knowledge and ii.) delivery …

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek Dec 2018

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek

Faculty and Research Publications

Three-dimensional (3-D) virtual environments have key affordances that can improve learning, particularly when context, culture, and pedagogical aims are aligned to a given learning situation. One challenge in detailing effective uses of 3-D virtual environments in teaching and learning contexts is that the design judgments involved are not always made explicit. We argue that the transparency of design judgments, as it relates to the use of 3-D virtual environments, are critically important. This article advances scholarship of emerging technologies by detailing the design judgments of a university instructor within a Design for Social Impact cross-disciplinary course. To address learner needs …

Report Of The N|150 Commission, Donde Ashmos Plowman, William G. Thomas Iii

Papers, Publications, & Presentations for University of Nebraska-Lincoln Administration

As the campus prepares to mark its 150th year, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is poised to chart a bold and distinctive course for the next generation. UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green appointed more than 150 stakeholders of the university – faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members – to the Nebraska Commission of 150 to envision how the university can best serve Nebraska and the world for the next 25 years.

The university’s inaugural charter in 1869 as a land-grant institution offered a sweeping vision for our founding:

Personal Reflections / 12.20.18, José M. Torres

Personal Reflections

Today as our IMSA students depart from their IMSA home to spend winter break at their "other" home, I want to wish them and their families a very joy-filled winter break. I know that our staff, including myself and the faculty, look forward to enjoying the holidays with our respective families.

Last Friday, our students, led ably by our Music Faculty Mary Beth McCarthy and Emily Cooley, put on a spectacular music program, "Sleigh Ride Around the World". Many family members who joined us can attest to the quality and variety of the performance. I was so impressed with the …
