Measuring College Student Satisfaction: A Multi-Year Study Of The Factors Leading To Persistence, Felice D. Billups Oct 2008

Measuring College Student Satisfaction: A Multi-Year Study Of The Factors Leading To Persistence, Felice D. Billups

Higher Education

How satisfied are students with their college experience? Do they receive the academic and social benefits they expect when they enroll? At what point do they decide that their institutional choice is a “fit” or not? Numerous researchers have investigated these questions for decades (Astin, 1977; Noel, 1978; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Peters, 1988; Tinto, 1987). In the end, most researchers agree that highly satisfied students are more likely to remain in, and ultimately, graduate from college. One of the ways that colleges measure student satisfaction is through the administration of student satisfaction surveys. Satisfaction survey programs emerged in the …

Assessing Middle School Students’ Knowledge Of Conduct/Consequences And Their Behaviors Regarding The Use Of Social Networking Sites, Lawrence P. Filippelli, Stacey L. Kite, Robert K. Gable

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying, social networking sites (such as myspace and facebook), and instant messaging programs are initiating numerous problems for school administrators on a national level (McKenna, 2007). Franek (2005) defines a cyber bully as “anyone who repeatedly misuses technology to harass, intimidate, bully, or terrorize another person” (p.36). Students utilize cell phones, personal digital assistants, home computers, and laptop computers to access the internet and communicate with friends almost instantly.

The Institutional Challenges Of Full-Time Faculty Retirement: Has The Expedition Accomplished All That It Promised And That It Should Accomplish?, Jeffrey D. Senese

Administration Publications and Research

This paper provides a discussion of the issues and challenges that are presented in the recent literature concerning faculty retirement and the impacts this phenomenon has on colleges and universities as well as practical suggestions for administratively planning. Faculty retirement is an issue that has the potential for tremendous impact on institutions of higher education. In the coming decade there will likely be a generational shift in the faculty through retirements and rehiring and this will test many institutions in their efforts to maintain a strong core faculty strength in their curricula, research and service missions not to mention the …

Patterns Of District Performance In Student Achievement: Connecting Resources To Student Achievement, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite Oct 2007

Patterns Of District Performance In Student Achievement: Connecting Resources To Student Achievement, Peter Simpson, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite

School Finance and Student Achievement

This presentation is the first sequence of a three-phase study using a mixed method sequential explanatory strategy (Creswell, 2003). The study is research in-progress that investigates how resources can increase or diminish the value resources as they move through the education delivery system contributing in variations in its overall performance (Porter, 1985). The study is unique, because it combines, and is based on microeconomic and complex adaptive theories to examine resource utilization within school districts. This first sequence has two analytical goals and steps: (1) to verify the significant correlation, but with patterns of variability for district performance measured by …

Trading In One Set Of Keys For Another: Suggestions For Success Self-Management Of Senior Academic Job Changes And Transitions, Jeffrey D. Senese Ph.D. Oct 2006

Trading In One Set Of Keys For Another: Suggestions For Success Self-Management Of Senior Academic Job Changes And Transitions, Jeffrey D. Senese Ph.D.

Administration Publications and Research

This essay discusses the transition process for academic vice presidents from the perspective of an academic vice president. Given that many institutions do not adequately plan for the exit and entry of academic vice presidents, and the lack of literature on this topic, as well as the importance of this position at many institutions, this essay is offered as a beginning for further study.

The movement of academic administrators from one institution to another is done with perhaps more regularity today than in past years and decades. It has been argued that while many academic vice presidents spend most of …

Utilization Of Robotics In Higher Education, John Drew, Michael Esposito, Dr. Christine Perakslis Feb 2006

Utilization Of Robotics In Higher Education, John Drew, Michael Esposito, Dr. Christine Perakslis

Technology

The use of technology in the classroom has evolved from the most primitive to the widespread use of personal computers. One of the trends in technological advancements to enter the classroom is the use of robotics. The relationship between robotics and education spans many years. This paper details Papert’s Constructionism theory defining learning as being more effective when students are “constructing” or “doing” activities that are personally meaningful. Research includes assessment of experiences of this method of teaching Information Technology through robotics at such institutions as West Point, Reykjavik University and University of South Florida. Based on the experiences reported …

Obesity, Educational Attainment, And State Economic Welfare, Martin W. Sivula Ph.D. May 2004

Obesity, Educational Attainment, And State Economic Welfare, Martin W. Sivula Ph.D.

Higher Education

For the first time in history, estimates of the overweight people in the world rival estimates of those malnourished. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) ranked obesity among the top 10 risks to human health worldwide. In the early 1960s, nearly half of the Americans were overweight and 13% were obese. Today some 64% of U.S. adults are overweight and 30.5% are obese. Even more alarming, twice as many U.S. children are overweight than were twenty years ago, a 66% increase. Non-communicable diseases impose a heavy economic burden on already strained health systems. Health is a key determinant of development …

Affirmative Action: From Before Bakke To After Grutter, Peter Lehmuller, Dennis E. Gregory Jan 2004

Affirmative Action: From Before Bakke To After Grutter, Peter Lehmuller, Dennis E. Gregory

Administration Publications and Research

Affirmative action as a policy to solve past racism has existed since the civil rights movement in the mid-twentieth century. Since its inception there has been controversy as to whether affirmative action can stand legal scrutiny. If it can, then under what circumstances and for what programs may it be used? Since the "Bakke" case in 1978, a variety of lower federal courts have sought to determine whether diversity is a compelling state interest in higher education admissions and other related programs, or whether race may even be used as a factor in admissions. The recent Grutter and Gratz cases …
