Implementation Of Social-Emotional Learning, Jordyn Rippe
Implementation Of Social-Emotional Learning, Jordyn Rippe
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Social-emotional learning has shown distinction as strengthening students' social and emotional competencies, as well as enhancing the academic experience. The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of a social-emotional curriculum would improve competencies in social-emotional development and self-regulation skills. Students need adequate social and emotional instruction that will assist in being able to manage relationships, identify emotions, as well as regulate them. The focus of social-emotional learning is to create a fair learning environment for all students (Cipriano et al., 2022). Lack of social and emotional skills instruction in the classroom can severely impact the development …
Teaching Engaging Grammar Instruction In The High School English Classroom, Emily A. Erlbacher
Teaching Engaging Grammar Instruction In The High School English Classroom, Emily A. Erlbacher
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Grammar is a fundamental component in the content area of English Language Arts. Having a strong foundation in grammar is a critical stepping stone to writing clearly and communicating with success. Despite its importance, grammar is historically not the most engaging topic for high school students. My study, consisting of a seven week action plan involving the ninth graders in an English Language Arts classroom, sought to recognize this disengagement and work to combat it in order to improve students’ writing capabilities. More specifically, the purpose of my action research was to evaluate different grammar instructional strategies recommended in existing …

Capturing Care: A Visual Narrative On Caregivers At J.P Lord School, Melisa I. Ontiveros
Capturing Care: A Visual Narrative On Caregivers At J.P Lord School, Melisa I. Ontiveros
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This project explores the emotional experiences of caregivers at J.P. Lord School, a unique program within the Omaha Public School district that serves children and young adults with complex special needs. As one of the few schools of its kind in the country, J.P. Lord offers a rare glimpse into the world of caregiving in a highly specialized educational setting (Omaha Public Schools, n.d). Despite the critical role these educators play, there is limited research exploring the emotional experiences of special education teachers—especially those working in medically complex or high-needs environments. This lack of visibility makes it even more important …
"Integrative" Vs "Integration": Stem Skills And Concept Development In 6th Grade Students, Kathryn Chain
"Integrative" Vs "Integration": Stem Skills And Concept Development In 6th Grade Students, Kathryn Chain
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
As a whole, interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in schools is on the rise at a national level, and it is widely recognized that the development of skills and concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math are not only beneficial to students, but are in fact necessities for future citizens of an increasingly global world (Kelley & Knowles, 2016.) Despite this increasing acceptance and awareness of the need for STEM literacy, there is a critical lack of guidelines on what STEM education actually entails and how to effectively integrate these concepts and skills into the educational …
A Future For The U.S. Department Of Education, Keith V. Allen
A Future For The U.S. Department Of Education, Keith V. Allen
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This thesis examines the persistent inequities within the U.S. public education system, particularly affecting low-income and underserved communities. Despite the founding mission of the U.S. Department of Education to ensure equitable access to quality education, systemic disparities continue to prevent millions of students from realizing their full potential. By exploring the Department’s historical evolution, this research highlights three critical areas undermining educational equity: unequal funding, an overreliance on standardized testing, and the lack of universal access to preschool and higher education. The thesis argues that equitable funding is not merely a financial issue, but a moral imperative—an investment in the …

Sprachlerner Aufbauen, Eine Studie Zu Us-Amerikanischen Und Deutschen Lehrplänen, Kyley Bishop
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The application of mastery learning, where students progress through their learning in a self-paced manner until they have mastered specific concepts, is considered appealing for teaching introductory programming courses. Despite its growing popularity in computing and its extensive use in other disciplines, there is no overview of the design of courses that use mastery learning. In this position paper, we present an overview of five mastery learning models and discuss examples of how these can be applied in practice, both in foundational programming as well as more advanced courses. Our analysis focuses on the student progression through the course, the …

In the push to broaden participation in computer science (CS) within the United States, there have been a number of highly successful efforts to engage urban high schools and communities. As urban areas often have high concentrations of poverty and underrepresented populations, these efforts meet a well-known need, and have a strong potential impact. However, urban audiences are not the only ones to lack adequate computer science education opportunities. In the United States, 1 in 5 people live in a rural area [19], and studies consistently show that rural areas offer fewer opportunities for students to engage with computer science …

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This paper reconceptualizes educative leadership as leadership of learning, integrating advancements in curriculum development, epistemological diversity, and ethical imperatives within a holistic pragmatic framework.
Leadership of learning positions leaders as facilitators of dynamic educational ecosystems that align curriculum goals with pluralistic epistemologies, practical solutions, and contextual relevance. Recent curriculum trends—such as personalized learning, competency-based education, cultural responsiveness, and socio-emotional learning—reflect an embrace of constructivist and critical approaches, emphasizing inclusivity and adaptability.
Holistic pragmatism strengthens these developments, advocating for curriculum designs that are theoretically sound and practically relevant, fostering co-construction of knowledge through active engagement.
Organizational development (OD) theory enriches this …

Nearly 20% of US older adults have mental health concerns, but few mental health professionals specialize in this population. In Nebraska, where almost 17% of Nebraska’s population is >65 years of age, BHECN conducted a survey to understand provider attitudes about and abilities to serve the state’s older population. Results from this online survey of licensed mental health practitioners in 2022 showed that 61% of responding practitioners were rural, 27% did not provide direct clinical services to older adults, and only 18% of their time was spent working with older adults. Barriers to providing care to older adults included Medicare …

Revealing The Key Ingredient: Understanding How Teachers In Challenging School Environments Navigate School Culture To Enhance Learner Retention, Babalwa Kafu-Quvane Dr
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This paper explores teachers’ professional practices to gain a thorough grasp and a deep understanding of what it takes to retain learners in an environment where most schools fail to do so. I approach the study using a qualitative multiple case study design and position it within the interpretive paradigm. I purposively selected 50 post-level one teachers from five schools. Cavanagh and Dellar’s theory on culture of school improvement, which emphasizes the transformation of schools into learning communities through social interaction, interpersonal relationships, and support among various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and learners, was used as theoretical lens for this …

What Do Pre-Service Teachers Know About Teaching With Technology?, Lauren Hays, Jenna Kammer, Kristina Schuler
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This paper presents the results of a study which examined how 132 pre-service teacher work samples documented implementation of teaching with technology during student teaching experiences. Researchers determined which ISTE Standards for Students and ISTE Standards for Educators the pre-service teachers were using based on their reported technology use from the work samples. Themes of how the technology was used are also reported to gain a deeper understanding of pre-service teachers’ use of educational technology. Findings indicate that students are taught to use technology for learning, but often used it for engagement.
Proactive Behavior Strategies To Reduce Challenging Behaviors Leading To Exclusionary Discipline, Katherine A. Graves, Lindsey Mirielli, Chad Rose
Proactive Behavior Strategies To Reduce Challenging Behaviors Leading To Exclusionary Discipline, Katherine A. Graves, Lindsey Mirielli, Chad Rose
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Teachers face a persistent challenge of addressing problem behavior in schools, often leading to office disciplinary referrals (ODRs) and subsequent exclusionary discipline practices such as suspension or expulsion. Despite widespread use, these disciplinary measures have shown little effectiveness in enhancing school safety or addressing student behavior. However, teachers can play a crucial role in mitigating problem behavior by implementing proactive strategies. By adopting effective proactive approaches, teachers can reduce the frequency of ODRs and subsequently decrease reliance on exclusionary discipline, thereby minimizing the adverse immediate and long-term outcomes associated with such practices. The purpose of this paper is to provide …

From Adverse Childhood Experiences To Adulthoodjob Satisfaction: Mediating Roles Of Posttraumaticbeliefs And Self-Evaluation, Jaeyoung Kim, Isak Kim, Kaiqi Zhou, Wongeun Ji
Counseling Faculty Publications
This study investigates the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and job satisfaction in adulthood, mediated by posttraumatic beliefs and core self-evaluation (CSE). Based on the literature, we hypothesized that posttraumatic beliefs, potentially developed following ACEs, would have negative effects on individuals’ CSE and job satisfaction. Structural equation modeling of survey data from 384 employees with at least one ACE revealed that posttraumatic beliefs fully mediated the effect of ACEs on both job satisfaction and CSE. Furthermore, CSE was a partial mediator between posttraumatic beliefs and job satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of adopting trauma-informed approaches in employment counseling.
Assessing Feeling States And Enjoyment Of Various Exercise Activities, Kaitlyn Wusk
Assessing Feeling States And Enjoyment Of Various Exercise Activities, Kaitlyn Wusk
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
To maintain physical health, the American College of Sports Medicine (2022) recommends general exercise guidelines for healthy adults. A lack of adherence to these recommendations may be attributable in part to feeling states and enjoyment while exercising. The study utilized surveys to evaluate feeling states and enjoyment of various exercise activities to determine which type of group exercise most successfully induces changes in feeling states and if a positive correlation exists between feeling state changes and enjoyment. Students enrolled in the Fitness for Living course at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) were surveyed before and after eleven distinct …

Healthcare Providers' Perceptions Of Infant Physical Activity And Communication, Priyanka Chaudhary, Kailey Snyder, Shari Deveney, Danae Dinkel
Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Background
Healthcare providers (HPs) play a critical role in disseminating information about infant health and development. Two key developmental areas for infants are physical activity (PA) and communication. Few studies have examined HPs views of these topics. Thus, HPs may need support to promote these early development outcomes in infants. Thus, the study explored HPs' perceptions of infant PA and communication.
Methods
A total of 13 HPs with a wide variety of backgrounds were recruited. Zoom semi-structured interviews were based on the Health Belief Model. Deductive content analysis was utilized to analyze data.
Results
HPs knew little about PA guidelines. …
