The Experiences Of First-Year School Counselors From Novice To Expert, Anne E. Luther

Student Work

This study described the common lived experience of 10 first year school counselors. This study explored the experiences within four areas: relationships with staff and students, graduate program training, skills implementation, and relationships with building and district administration. The phenomenology relied on an initial structured interview after eight weeks on the job as the main data source. Other data sources included participant journal entries, non-participant observations, veteran counselor contact logs, and a follow-up interview at the end of the school year. The data triangulation and constant comparative analysis resulted in common themes that described the essence of the common lived …

The dependent variables were (a) academic achievement, (b) student behavior, (c) student attendance, and (d) student perceptions about community. Independent variables were the interdisciplinary team and grade level. All four research questions were answered using …

Using Culturally And Linguistically Appropriate Assessments To Ensure That American Indian And Alaska Native Students Recieve The Special Education Programs And Services They Need, John W. Tippeconnic Iii, Susan C. Faircloth

Disabilities

The American Indian and Alaska Native Education Research Agenda (Research Agenda Working Group, Strang & von Glatz, 2001) represents the most recent formal call for research leading to improved assessments for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students with special learning needs. Similar calls were recorded at hearings and published in commissioned papers in the early 1990s (Cahape, 1993; Johnson, 1991). The disproportionate number of AI/AN students receiving special education services and identified as limited English proficient (LEP) indicates an ongoing need for the research. This Digest briefly reviews the legislation and literature pertaining to the influence of language and …

The Development And Validation Of The Ethical Climate Index For Middle And High Schools, Laura E. Schulte, Franklin Titus Thompson, Jeanie Talbott, Ann Luther, Michelle Garcia, Shirley Blanchard, Laraine Conway, Melanie Mueller

Counseling Faculty Publications

One school characteristic that needs to be considered as important in keeping schools safe is school climate. The purposes of this study were to develop and validate an instrument that measures the ethical climate of middle and high schools. To create the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI), we adapted the Ethical Climate Index for graduate and professional school programs to apply to middle and high schools. The SECI measures a school’s sense of community by assessing student and teacher interactions and relationships through the application of five ethical principles: respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity. Got Math? Implementation Guide, Margo Shea, Christopher Nye Jul 2002

Got Math? Implementation Guide, Margo Shea, Christopher Nye

Curriculum

For many kids math is like spinach--something to be avoided if possible. This may well be because they see learning math as a rather abstract process, cut off from the real world. For many teachers, with large classes and pressure to prepare for standardized tests, opportunities to individualize math instruction and to experiment with creative group activities that bring math alive remain out of reach. As a result of these and other factors, across the nation our children's math achievement levels remain pretty disappointing.

Got Math?, an out-of-school-time mentoring program for third through fifth graders, is one model that aims …

We write in response to George Will's May 21 column, "The sad state of women's studies." Women's studies is thriving at the University of Nebraska. On the Lincoln campus, a major in this field has been offered for 25 years. In Kearney, students have been able to earn a minor in women's studies since 1989; a recent student conference there drew nearly 100 participants. Just 15 months after its approval at UNO, 11 students are pursuing the major in women's studies.

This discipline helps students answer questions and prepare for careers as no other field can. Among women's studies majors …

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2002

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Our institutions are changing all the time but for the most part these changes do not make a big difference, either because the results are confined to an isolated segment of the organization or because the environment is not responsive. To be considered truly transformational, the initiative must alter the culture of the institutions by changing select underlying assumptions and institutional behaviors, processes, and products; it must be deep and pervasive, affecting the whole institution; it must be intentional; and it must occur consistently over time (Eckel, Hill, & Green, 1998).
