Mutual Fund Of The Minds: A Correlational Study On Education And The Economy At The State Level, Aaron Jay Bredenkamp

Student Work

During his tenure, President Barak Obama promoted education as a key to economic prosperity. However, in the post recession economy, many states reduced school funding. In Nebraska, the Governor attempted to reduce taxes for voters, while the Legislature examined how to balance the budget with a school funding formula that continually called for increased funding. Chapter One outlines this ongoing conflict between state and federal policy. Chapter Two provides a historical context of school finance policy with the state of Nebraska’s school finance history being provided in even greater detail. The indicators used to measure the economic impact of education …

Rates Of Poverty And Special Education Students Among Open Enrollment Students, Heather D. Nebesniak Nov 2016

Rates Of Poverty And Special Education Students Among Open Enrollment Students, Heather D. Nebesniak

Student Work

The school choice movement is gaining momentum across the nation. More now that ever, families are looking beyond their local neighborhood schools to find a school that they feel reflects their educational values. Societal structures are changing and families look to the schools to provide resources that were historically outside the school realm. At-risk students, such as students living in poverty and students requiring special education services both require a greater pool of resources. In order to plan for enrollment growth and to meet student needs, educational administrators are faced with the task of predicting needs of students and securing …

Traditional Vs. Blended: The Effect Of Instruction Methods On Sixth Grade Pre-Algebra Students’ Performance And Perceptions, Lynn Marie Spady

Student Work

This study examined sixth grade students’ math performance under two models of instruction: traditional and blended. Blended instruction requires face-to-face learning with an instructor, but allows students to do a portion of the work independently online. Traditional instruction takes place with an instructor present at all times. One area of interest in this study was the level of procedural knowledge acquired under the two different models of instruction. Results from three different assessments indicated no significant difference between the two groups of students. An additional area of interest was students’ preferences in teaching strategies in math and approaches to learning. …

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

This study sought to investigate the effects of mechanical unloading on myocardial energetics and the metabolic perturbation of heart failure (HF) in an effort to identify potential new therapeutic targets that could enhance the unloading-induced cardiac recovery. The authors prospectively examined paired human myocardial tissue procured from 31 advanced HF patients at left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implant and at heart transplant plus tissue from 11 normal donors. They identified increased post-LVAD glycolytic metabolites without a coordinate increase in early, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates. The increased pyruvate was not directed toward the mitochondria and the TCA cycle for complete …

Mapping Omaha: A Geographic Assessment Of The Service Learning P-16 Initiative, Rosa Najera

SLA Scholarship

CUMU (Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities), 2016 Conference, Poster Presentations:

Racial divide in Omaha, NE is apparent—African Americans in the north, Latinos in the south, and Whites in the west, which is visually depicted in Cable’s racial dot map (2013). Beyond racial segregation, according to city data in 2013, 31% of the population are below the poverty level in North Omaha and 22.5% in South Omaha. These two regions result in a 30% poverty rate compared to 18% for all of Omaha. This clearly indicates that not only is the poverty rate higher for North and South regions …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The need for high quality, sustainable Computer Science Education (CSE) professional development (PD) at the grades K-12 level is essential to the success of the global CSE initiatives. This study investigates the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to identify emergent teacher leaders within a high quality CSE PD program. The CSE PD program was designed and implemented through collaboration between the computer science and teacher education units at a Midwestern metropolitan university in North America. A unique feature of this specific program is in the intentional development of a social network. This study discusses the importance of social networks, …

District-Created Response To Intervention In High School Mathematics: A Program Evaluation Integrating Social Cognitive Theory, Elizabeth M. Wessling Oct 2016

District-Created Response To Intervention In High School Mathematics: A Program Evaluation Integrating Social Cognitive Theory, Elizabeth M. Wessling

Student Work

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the effectiveness of students' daily participation in a supplementary high school mathematics class, a Math Lab, as an intervention in mathematics. The study was conducted using three components that integrated Albert Bandura's social cognitive learning theory about the reciprocal causality of personal, environmental, and behavioral elements of the learning process. Math Lab students were given adapted portions of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, MSLQ, of Pintrich et al. (as cited in Opdecam, Everaert, VanKeer, & Buysschaert, 2013) and a researcher-created survey. The math portion of the Measures of Academic Progress assessment …

Scholarship of Metropolitan Mission

Universities throughout the United States operate engagement centers to extend campus faculty, staff and student resources to their communities. In 2014, the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) opened the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (Weitz CEC): a privately funded $24 million, 70,000 square foot facility located in the middle of its original Dodge Street campus. In addition to offices for its service learning and community service enterprises, the CEC houses over thirty university and community organizations and offers extensive space for meetings, dialogue and collaboration. This paper will discuss its strategic and programmatic origins, unique design, and lessons learned in …

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Obesity is associated with the development of vascular insulin resistance; however, pathophysiological mechanisms are poorly understood. We sought to investigate the role of WNT5A-JNK in the regulation of insulin-mediated vasodilator responses in human adipose tissue arterioles prone to endothelial dysfunction. In 43 severely obese (BMI 44±11 kg/m2) and five metabolically normal non-obese (BMI 26±2 kg/m2) subjects, we isolated arterioles from subcutaneous and visceral fat during planned surgeries. Using videomicroscopy, we examined insulin-mediated, endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses and characterized adipose tissue gene and protein expression using real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses. Immunofluorescence was used to quantify endothelial nitric oxide …

They’Re Lovin’It: How Preschool Children Mediated Their Funds Of Knowledge Into Dramatic Play, Anne E. Karabon

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The funds of knowledge framework promotes connecting community contexts with curriculum aimed to activate children’s prior knowledge. Typically, teachers determine what knowledge sources harmonise best with their existing programming, potentially omitting particular resources that may not align. Young children, on the other hand, can act as agents when integrating knowledge for themselves into play. This article explores how children mediated their cultural knowledge into dramatic play and what factors were key to empowering children to naturally incorporate funds of knowledge across contexts. Grounded in critical sociocultural theory, findings reveal that children use mediation as a form of power and agency …
