Interactive Pharmacological And Behavioral Management Of A Hyperactive Attention Deficit Disordered Child In An Elective Pharmacy Clerkship, John W. Hill, Dick R. Gourley
Interactive Pharmacological And Behavioral Management Of A Hyperactive Attention Deficit Disordered Child In An Elective Pharmacy Clerkship, John W. Hill, Dick R. Gourley
Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The principles of behavior analysis and basic behavioral definitions were utilized by clinical pharmacy students within an interdisciplinary setting to recognize and reinforce the spontaneously occurring on-task desirable behaviors of an 8-year-old hyperactive, attention deficit disordered child. Data gathered by pharmacy students from a case study under supervision of their preceptors, a clinical pharmacist, and a special educator, facilitated the physician's decision to reduce the medication for the child as behavioral intervention was implemented at home and school. Findings indicated that while the subject was taking psychostimulant medication, often recommended for children with hyperactive behaviors, the drug alone did not …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Processing Rate And Memory Span In Learning Disabled Children, Jeffrey Wayne Gray
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Processing Rate And Memory Span In Learning Disabled Children, Jeffrey Wayne Gray
Student Work
Slow rate of information processing has been offered as an explanation for the short-term memory problems of learning and/or reading disabled children (e.g., Spring & Capps, 1974). The present investigation used an item identification task and a memory span task to determine whether, when learning and/or reading disabled and non-disabled children are equated with regard to the speed with which they process information, their measured memory spans are also equal. It was hypothesized that the observed memory span differences would be eliminated by equating the two groups on a measure of processing rate.

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Student Work
The effect of overload training on adults has been considered for thousands of years. Centuries before Christ, Milo of Crotona carried a calf on his back daily until the animal was full-grown, resulting in one of the earliest accounts of the overload principle (Bergan & Scoles, 1979). Results of overload training on adults have been well documented (Tanner, 1952; Hellebrandt & Houtz, 1958; Berger,1962a; 1962b; Rasch & Pierson, 1963; Berger & Hardage, 1967; Stull & Clark, 1970; Leighton, Holmes, Benson, Wooten & Schmerer, 1967; Wilmore, 1975; Gettman, Ward & Hager, 1982). However, how overload affects children and adolescents is barely …

Curriculum For Caring: Service Learning With Behaviorally Disordered Students, Abe Nicolaou, Larry K. Brendtro
Curriculum For Caring: Service Learning With Behaviorally Disordered Students, Abe Nicolaou, Larry K. Brendtro
Disabilities
The difficulty that seriously emotionally disturbed persons experience in forming or maintaining effective interpersonal relationships is an almost universal component of federal and state definitions for this disability. Yet, in the face of this impediment in the social domain, our curricular approaches in behavior disorders have been almost exclusively individualistic. While we are able to document our successes in instructing to precisely measured objectives, we too often have fallen short of the goal of instilling prosocial, responsible, caring interpersonal behavior in troubled children and adolescents.
Nonhandicapped Peers As Tutors Of Severely Behaviorally Disordered Students, William Stainback, Susan Stainback
Nonhandicapped Peers As Tutors Of Severely Behaviorally Disordered Students, William Stainback, Susan Stainback
Disabilities
Peer tutoring is not a new concept and there are a number of excellent reviews of research on the topic (Ehly & Larsen, 1980; Strain. 1981). However, there is little or no literature that directly relates nonhandicapped peer tutoring to the integration of severely behaviorally disordered students into regular schools. It is important that this void in the literature be corrected since increasing numbers of severely behaviorally disordered students are being integrated into regular neighborhood public schools. Many of these students require individual help with a wide array of rather ordinary behaviors such as staying on tasks, finding their way …

A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis
A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis
Student Work
The cardiorespiratory effects of exercise training in adults have been widely researched (26,39,53,56,57). Through training, the adult experiences an increase in maximum aerobic power (V 02 max), a decrease in resting and submaximum heart rate and an increase in maximum cardiac output (26,36,53,54,59,60). These physiological changes result in an increase in physical working capacity and an enhanced tolerance to all exercise workloads.
Factors contributing to the training effect in the adult include the intensity, the duration, and the frequency of exercise (1, 2). The recommended type of exercise involves activities which use large muscle groups of the body in a …

The Physiological And Physical Effects Of A Seven Week Summer Wrestling Camp On Experienced Prepubescent Wrestlers, Wade Hoyt Thomson
The Physiological And Physical Effects Of A Seven Week Summer Wrestling Camp On Experienced Prepubescent Wrestlers, Wade Hoyt Thomson
Student Work
Participation by children in competitive sports programs has increased considerably within the past 20 years, in part because of the increased number of competitive sports programs available for children (59). Furthermore, children are becoming increasingly involved at younger ages (48). Frequently, these programs are very physical, and actively competitive with little consideration given to how the children may respond or adapt to the strenuous exercise. It is tacitly assumed that children sports participants will experience the same physiological and physical benefits as would adult participants .
