High School Follow-Up Surveys: What Works?, James H. Mcmillan, Suzanne Trevvett
High School Follow-Up Surveys: What Works?, James H. Mcmillan, Suzanne Trevvett
MERC Publications
Increasing demand for accountability have prompted a renewed interest in determining effective methods of obtaining data from high school graduates and former students. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the methods and objectives of high school graduate/former student follow-up activities to identify procedures that resulted in high response rates and helpful information.
Information was obtained from three sources: local school systems in the Richmond metropolitan area, selected school systems in other areas of Virginia, and school systems in other states as identified through a search of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) database.
The purposes of the follow-up …
Teachers' Classroom Assessment And Grading Practices: Phase 1, James H. Mcmillan, Daryl Workman
Teachers' Classroom Assessment And Grading Practices: Phase 1, James H. Mcmillan, Daryl Workman
MERC Publications
Classroom assessment and grading practices are becoming a greater focus of educational inquiry as teachers and policymakers become more accountable to the public for educational outcomes via assessment driven instructional practices. This study was an attempt to better understand the classroom assessment and grading practices of teachers, which have previously been described as a "hodgepodge" mix of student attitude, effort and achievement. Specifically, the following questions regarding teachers' assessment and grading practices were addressed:
What is the current state of assessment practice and grading by teachers?
What assessment and grading topics do teachers identify as needs to be addressed in …
Developing Performance Support Systems For Complex Tasks: Lessons From A Lesson Planning System, Martyn Wild
Developing Performance Support Systems For Complex Tasks: Lessons From A Lesson Planning System, Martyn Wild
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
There lacks coherent and persuasive rationales for the further development of computer-based, interactive educational materials, for tertiary settings. Indeed, educational software arising out of what might be coined the “multimedia era”, namely the mid and later 19902, has been marked by lacklustre products with an emphasis in development and evaluation placed largely on technological issues (such as the use of video, sound and animations). As such, the rapid increase in commercially available (usually CD based) products has generally met a cool adoption from academics and educationalists, with both these groups often bemoaning the paucity or non-existence of effective instructional design …

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer
The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer
Theses
This study examines previous and forthcoming knowledge of ancient medicinal remedies and solutions which provide and enable]e the acquisition of better and safer health care. Because of political reasons which appear to be dominant over all others, this inherent knowledge continues to seemingly remain obscure within the medical world and within our society. Continued education plays a vital role in the assessment of health care today because statistics stress that too many Eves are daily being snuffed out because of careless and improper drug administration and insidious drug reactions which follow thereafter. As a result, many people are striving to …

Evaluating Action Research As A Model For School-Based Professional Development Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers In The Philippines, Florenda L. Gallos
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study documented a school-based professional development activity conducted in a secondary school in the Philippines where five secondary mathematics teachers and the head of the school participated in a program of action research. The effectiveness of action research as a form of professional development and the constraints in using this form of professional development in the Philippines were evaluated based on the changes on teachers in terms of pedagogical knowledge, practices and beliefs. Qualitative research techniques were used. The methodology included questionnaires, interviews, class observations and diaries. The results indicated that the involvement of the participants in the action …
The Construct Validity Of The Principles Of Edification As Measures Of Edifying Teaching In The Lds Church Educational System, Robert F. Elzey
The Construct Validity Of The Principles Of Edification As Measures Of Edifying Teaching In The Lds Church Educational System, Robert F. Elzey
Theses and Dissertations
The degree of validity of various teacher evaluation systems in the Church Educational System (CES) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been questioned. Despite several administrative and scholarly attempts, there has been an absence of an accepted set of dimensions for such measurement. In an effort to specify the desirable attributes and practices of religious educators, CES administrators have defined six CES values and seven principles of edification. One of these values is identified as Edifying Teaching. By CES definition, edification occurs when a student is built up spiritually. The seven principles of edification are …

The Desegregation Of A Historically Black High School In Jacksonville, Florida, Judith Bockel Poppell
The Desegregation Of A Historically Black High School In Jacksonville, Florida, Judith Bockel Poppell
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This historical study examines the desegregation of a historically African- American high school during the period between 1965-1975. The Mims v. The Duval County School Board (1971) decision brought about radical changes in the operation of the Duval County Public Schools. The mass transfer of teachers and reassignment of students as a result of the federal judge's order in this case resulted in a school system that was dramatically different from the one that previously existed. The author seeks to determine why the desegregation of William Raines High School was short-lived and questions the continued effort of the school system …
Courting Serendipity: Constructivist Theory And Classroom Practice, Marilyn Duckworth Jensen
Courting Serendipity: Constructivist Theory And Classroom Practice, Marilyn Duckworth Jensen
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a cross-case study and analysis of four teachers in a school involved in two reform initiatives which promote constructivist approaches to teaching and learning. The study describes the teachers' understandings of the learning theory and their interpretations of it in their classroom practice. The study found that three of the four teachers were practicing in ways consistent with constructivism while one was not because her need for control took precedence. The study found that although teachers are very aware of their students as individuals with different ways of learning and constructing an understanding, they are not much …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to compare midlife male graduate students with midlife female, early adulthood male, and early adulthood female graduate students in terms of their motivations for returning to higher education and their academic self-concept as returning students. Data were gathered, using Boshiers's Education Participation Scale (1995) and Drummond's Academic Self-Concept Scale (1984), from graduate students at a comprehensive, urban, southeastern, public university of approximately 10,000 students. The 426 graduate student participants were enrolled in three colleges (Business, Education, and Health) at the university.
Multivariate analysis of variance (MAN"OVA), univariate analysis of variance, and multiple comparison tests results indicate …

A paired t - test was performed on the students' Grade Point Average (G.P.A . ) before and after tutoring. Statistical analysis of t he data revealed that students who received peer tutoring experienced a statistically significant gain in academic achievement as measured by G. P .A. Research leading to this study indicated that at - risk students do benefit from same gender peer assistance in homework, reading and math skills when …
The Relationship Of Delinquency To Achievement, Christine J. Tomlinson
The Relationship Of Delinquency To Achievement, Christine J. Tomlinson
Theses
Studies have shown that juvenile delinquents are at risk for a wealth of other problems such as learning disabilities. below average intelligence, and attention deficit disorder. Some researchers have refuted these claims by saying that the difficulty in appropriately labeling individuals learning disabled and delinquent has resulted in increasing numbers of individuals being incorrectly labeled delinquent or learning disabled. Others have argued that differential treatment of learning disabled and delinquent youth has negatively affected the school performance of these individuals. This study examined the Reading, Math, and English achievement scores of both delinquents and nondelinquents in an attempt to determine …

Collateral Positions In Student Affairs, Lisa L. Kidd
Collateral Positions In Student Affairs, Lisa L. Kidd
Graduate Research Papers
Staff members in student services argue that students have become their responsibility by the default of the faculty. Faculty members, insisting that they are the university, do not want budgets for student support to remain large or to continue growing. Students want both faculty members and support personnel to pay attention to them. Administrators, legislators, and the public want to see budgets cut. The tensions are palpable.
The constant tug of war between faculty and staff for larger budgets places more pressure on universities to allocate funds equitably. In doing so, the use of collaborative positions have increased. By increasing …

Parental Perceptions Of Pre-School Education In Malaysia, Bronwyn L. Hewitt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Pre-school education in Malaysia has expanded significantly over the past twenty years and is currently the focus of increased attention within the Ministry of Education. This study explores and describes the perceptions of Malaysian parents concerning pre-school education. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's theory of the ecology of human development, the study examines the potential influence of macrosystem elements on the parents' perceptions, as well as the likely impact of such perceptions upon the home- pre-school mesosystem. The research was conducted with a group of 21 parents of children in their final year of preschool education. They were selected from four private …
School To Work Transition Experience Of Year 12 School Leavers, Valerie House
School To Work Transition Experience Of Year 12 School Leavers, Valerie House
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
As a consequence of increased retention rates in post compulsory schooling, educational systems have attempted to expand their curricular offerings. The aims of this study were twofold. The first was to examine a process of transition from school to work and the second considered the implications for improvement of the post compulsory school curriculum in facilitating transition. A semi structured, open ended interview was developed to gain information about the transition experience of seven Year 12 students. Interviews, recorded by audio tape, and the coded transcripts were the major data source. Results indicated that students coped well with the transition …
An Investigation Of Family Literacy Practices Of Eight Families With Preprimary Children And A Family Literacy Program Conducted In A Low Socio-Economic Area, Jennifer A. Jayatilaka
An Investigation Of Family Literacy Practices Of Eight Families With Preprimary Children And A Family Literacy Program Conducted In A Low Socio-Economic Area, Jennifer A. Jayatilaka
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Study of the research literature showed that literacy skills are socialised in young children along with their learning of oral language. This socialisation process occurs within a child's home environment long before they enter formal schooling. Family literacy has been shown to have the potential to impact powerfully on children's perceptions about literacy use through role models and support provided by various family and community members. Literacy activity is often deeply embedded in daily family practices. For some children, differences between home and school literacy practices can occur. Where this mismatch occurs for children in low socio economic homes the …
The Experience Of Flow And Learning By Designing Interactive Multimedia Software, Leonie Ramondt
The Experience Of Flow And Learning By Designing Interactive Multimedia Software, Leonie Ramondt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
As computer technology is increasingly adopted in education, some students continue to have little context for its use. This is particularly true of tertiary drama education students, of whom many still remain computer illiterate. Constructivist pedagogy proposes that a learner constructs knowledge through active participation in their learning. An approach that is gaining currency which applies this principle is learning by designing. This approach was adopted for this study, with the premise that the process of designing multimedia software for their peers would not only motivate these students to use computers but could also lead to a deepening of their …
Professional Development And Practice: A Study Of Early Childhood Teachers Of Mathematics, Wendy Hawthorne
Professional Development And Practice: A Study Of Early Childhood Teachers Of Mathematics, Wendy Hawthorne
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In the past twenty years there has been increased interest in the ways in which teachers construct their professional lives. It is no longer assumed that preservice education alone will enable teachers to meet the challenges of their teaching lives. Ongoing professional development is seen as an essential component of contemporary teachers' lives but remains a challenge for professional development planners and providers. The nature and extent of teachers' participation in professional development was a significant dimension of the investigation of professional development contained in this thesis. The research questions which formed the basis for the data collection in this …

A Case Study : A Short Term Art Therapy Intervention For A Child Victim To Bullying, Ffyona Matthews
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This single case study of a child bullied at school investigates whether a short-term, individual Art therapy intervention, within a school that runs an anti-bullying program, will ease the effects of bullying in that child. The subject is a 10 year old girl referred as being school avoidant due to being bullied. The intervention encouraged expression of emotions, fears and worries about the bullying, an- understanding of the bullying and its effects, exploration of alternative responses to being bullied and therapeutic support to help empower, build self-esteem, lower depression, loneliness, stress, and unhappiness at school. The intervention involved six one …

Stakeholders' Voices : A Socio-Cultural Approach To Describing And Extending An Understanding Of Primary Education In Mauritius, Michelle Griffiths
Stakeholders' Voices : A Socio-Cultural Approach To Describing And Extending An Understanding Of Primary Education In Mauritius, Michelle Griffiths
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study describes and expands an understanding of primary education in one developing country, Mauritius. The need for the study was argued from a review of literature which brought to notice the lack of social action perspectives in analysis of education in and about developing countries and the necessity and importance of knowing about the reality of schooling in developing countries. The research was conceptualised as a socio-cultural approach. It gave analytical priority to the actions, experiences and perceptions of teachers, pupils, parents and educationists in order to create an account of what Mauritian education was like and meant to …
Understanding Prolepsis Through Teacher Research, Phillip White
Understanding Prolepsis Through Teacher Research, Phillip White
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Most often teacher research is written in a linear narrative form, bringing the reader along the story line of discovery much as the researcher herself made her discoveries. I have chosen a different approach, one I'll label as recursive narrative. This narrative form follows my own thinking processes, reflexive, discursive, moving recursively from present to future to past and back again, attempting to create a circular whole that is evident at the end. This recursive narrative form is reflective of the shape of prolepsis itself, analyzing an activity while taking into account its historical form, its present form, and considering …

Adults "Making Meaning" At Colonial Williamsburg: A Descriptive Study Of Planners' Intentions And Audience Members' Constructions Of The 1996 History Forum, Joan Ellen Casey
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Forecasts reveal an increase in the percentage of mid to older adults in the U. S. and the need of educational programs for lifelong learners. In recognition of changing demographics, the American Association of Museums urged its member institutions to place a high priority on adult programs and research into learning. While museums have experienced changes in adapting to environmental conditions and more explicit educative mission, professionals have noticed the emergence of a meaning-making, constructivist paradigm.;Previously, no study dealt with the mental constructions adults have or form as they interface with a multi-faceted museum program such as the History Forum …
