A Voyage To A Culture: A Special Collection Of Teaching Techniques ( Imaginary Trip Becomes Real In A Classroom), Silvana Hage

It consists of a special collection of teaching techniques for post-elementary language teachers of an advanced second language course. The purpose of this project is to help students get a glimpse of a culture in a situational, functional, and performing way. The students plan an imaginary trip to the second language culture of the country where the second language is spoken.

MA TESOL Collection

This paper discusses certain characteristics of human mental functioning - an understanding of which sheds light on the mechanism of suggestopedia. These characteristics are: (1) the electrical impulses produced by the brain, and in particular, the alpha brainwaves, which are characteristic of a calm state of mind which is believed to be optimum for accelarated learning, (2) the division of left and right brain hemisphere functioning and perception - with the right ( intuitive) functions being a focus as the receiver of suggestion (subminal stimuli from the environment; the moving force in suggestopedia), and (3) the conscious vs. the paraconscious …

Cultural And Linguistic Factors Affecting The Educational Achiements Of Aboriginals - An Aboriginal Perspective, Vic Forrest

This paper, in looking at Aboriginal education, will examine some of the following points: definitions of Aboriginality; the nature of cultural differences; the exclusion years in Western Australia; Government policies; language as a barrier; and current achievements of Aboriginal students.

Resegregation Processes In Desegregated Schools And Status Relationships For Hispanic Students, Helen A. Moore, Peter Iadicola

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The resegregation of students in desegregated elementary schools generates potential barriers to social integration and academic achievement.  WE are interested in the role of greater status inequality in reducing academic achievement for minority students.  We generate multiple measures of internal schooling processes such as ability grouping, high stakes testing, and unequal burdens of busing across racial ethnic groups at ten desegregated elementary schools in California selected as case studies from a larger sample of 182 schools.  Hispanic student enrollments ranged from 10 percent to 53 percent of each campus and we assess variations in resegregation practices and student and campus …

The Questioning Process: An Approach To Esol That Combines The Teaching And Learning Of English With The Facilitation Of Growth In Self And Cultural Awareness, Gordon Mathews

MA TESOL Collection

This project delineates an approach to ESOL that combines the teaching and learning of English with the facilitation of growth in self and cultural awareness - a greater knowledge of one's self and one's cultural molding. This approach involves the examination by students of items from American media, to understand what such items say, what they imply about American culture and for students' own culture (s), and what these implications mean for students themselves. The instructor facilitates this process through the progressive asking of questions - thus the name 'the questioning process' - and simultaneously monitors language usage by students' …

An Approach For Teaching The Illiterate Esl Student How To Read And Write, Mary Sween Jan 1980

An Approach For Teaching The Illiterate Esl Student How To Read And Write, Mary Sween

MA TESOL Collection

Although much work has previously been done on teaching the illiterate, I feel that much of it is quite rhetorical, theorical, and not complete or easy to follow. This paper dwells on a very practical approach to teaching the illiterate how to read and write, much of which I have devised, used, and tested its validity.

I have proceeded from assuming the student is at point zero and built his ability to read and write through the use of specific activities appropriate to his level of competency.

This is an easy to follow and complete guide to teaching reading and …

Selected Variables Related To The Knowledge Of, Attitude Towards, And Utilization Of Bilingual Education Services By Spanish American Parents In Two Michigan Cities, Ricardo Garcia Rodriguez

Problem. There has been much controversy over bilingual education programs during the past decade. This has attracted the attention of the news media and local communities throughout the United States. The Language Of 5 1/2-Year-Old Children From Homes Where Macedonian, Vietnamese And An Aboriginal Tribal Language Are Used As The Language Of The Home, A. L. Mcgregor

Research outputs pre 2011

Throughout the world migration patterns and changing attitudes towards education and other cultures have led over the past three or four decades to a remarkable growth in the learning of second or foreign languages. Within this area the learning of English by speakers of other languages takes up the largest numbers and is to be found in every part of the globe.

Nevertheless to date comparatively little is known of processes and patterns in second language development. Evidence on phonological and semantic development is exceedingly skimpy. Hernandez (in Ervin-Tripp 1970), Malmberg (1945), Wode (1976) and Ervin-Tripp (1974) have examined the …

This interest has its origins in the concern felt and views expressed at various conferences that many pupils in our schools are in need of an educational approach which will take cognisance of their linguistic and cultural differences.
