Athletics, Academics, And The Financial Condition Of U.S. Private Colleges, Jody W. Lipford, Jerry K. Slice
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Abstract
Many private colleges in the U.S. face financial difficulty. The role of athletics in the financial condition of U.S. colleges is subject to controversy. Supporters argue that collegiate sports draw students, improve student quality, and increase donor support. Detractors argue that athletics are costly and undermine the academic mission of the institution. In this paper, we examine metrics of athletic and academic quality to determine their effects on the financial health of a sample of U.S. private colleges. Our findings indicate that higher spending on athletics reduces an institution’s financial health and that academic quality increases an institution’s financial …

The purpose was to shed light on the experiences of women who broke the glass ceiling in this unexplored male-dominated industry (Glass & Cook, 2016). The challenges these women encountered along with the mechanisms they employed to navigate those, and finally their motivation to continue pursuing a career in this industry, were assessed via in-depth semi-structured interviews and then the data was analyzed following a constant comparison thematic analysis. Challenges and coping mechanisms were classified according to the four levels, namely …

It is not uncommon to see tears shed by players on both the winning and losing teams, particularly after a championship game. However, sport is also seen as an environment where competitors go to “put their game faces on” and keep their emotions in check, such as during the film A League of Their Own, when a manager tells a sobbing player that “there is no crying in baseball!” The current study sought to examine the extent to which individuals agree with this perspective. Specifically, participants rated the acceptability of crying by males and females in both sport and non-sport …

The current study asked participants to report their needs for belonging and distinctiveness and to choose a fictional sport team to cheer for upon moving to a new country. One team was described as being the “mainstream” team …

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) justifies its power and regulatory structure as necessary to promote competitive balance. Despite this, there is limited research on the efficacy of NCAA policies that were implemented with the intention of supporting more parity in Division I conferences. This study examined whether the 2015 cost of attendance (COA) policy was associated with competitive balance in various groups within the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Through the lenses of the Matthew Effect and policy design theory, this study aimed to understand how NCAA policies may hurt or help inequality in college sport. Although not all …

Can Nil Help Dissolve The Gender Inequities That Are Baked Into The Fabric Of The Ncaa Culture?, Ryan Cory
Transformations: Presentation Slides
The gender equity imbalance in college athletics has been an issue since the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed in 1905 (Boninger, 2018). On July 1, 2021, the NCAA put together a NIL policy that all athletes across all divisions can benefit from their brands (Jessop & Sabin, 2021). The impact that NIL will bring to compensation between male and female student-athletes can compare to the impact that Title IX brought to female sports participation rates in 1972 (Staurowsky & Rhoads, 2020). The reasons deal with social media and how female student-athletes use it. Female student-athletes tend to be …

Gender Discrimination And Its Impact On Female Sport Management Students, Nicole Bellettiere
Transformations: Presentation Slides
Gender discrimination within the sport management industry is a prominent complication that has been around for seemingly forever. Whether it’s being ashamed of their femininity by a male dominated society (Hoeber and Shaw, 2003), undergoing gender stereotyping (Bower, Hums, and Grappendorf, 2015) or experiencing sexism (Hardin, Smith, Taylor and Welch, 2018), it’s clear that women have been pushed to the bottom of the sporting industry. This has an overall effect on female sport management students and their experiences throughout their time in the undergraduate program. It’s been concluded that female students are left questioning whether sport management is right for …
