The goal of this project is to examine how women fit into the actuarial career path and how cultural expectations, biological factors, and personal aspirations affect their experiences in the field. Dramatic changes in the profession have occurred since its emergence in the nineteenth century to become more welcoming to women who choose to enter the profession. However, despite the equalizing demographic shifts of the field, it is still a male-dominated profession. In March 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L. 111-148) as amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (HCERA, P.L. 111-152) (referred to hereafter as the ACA) was signed into law as the most comprehensive piece of legislation since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid legislation in 1965 aimed at creating sweeping health care reform. This brief provides a summary of the titles contained in the law, the implementation of the provisions, and the estimated financial impact.

This Petition challenges the constitutionality of section 9A(b) of the Income Guarantee Act. The main claim the Petitions raise is that section 9A(b) establishes an absolute presumption whereby those who own or have access to the use of a vehicle shall be seen as having an income at the amount of the benefit, and thus their right to the benefit of income guarantee is revoked. It was argued that this presumption unconstitutionally infringes the right to minimal dignified human existence.

Cobra Subsidies: A Compelling Narrative Of Policy Impact On The Unemployed, Uninsured, Hannah N. Gregg

This paper analyzes a 2009 U.S. policy which provided short term federal subsidies for COBRA health insurance premiums. COBRA allows the recently unemployed to continue purchasing health insurance through their employment-based insurance plan for a short time period after they become unemployed. Early analysis found low take-up rates for COBRA insurance due to the exceedingly high cost of full health insurance premiums, especially for those who have just lost a steady employment income. A short term 65 percent federal subsidy for COBRA insurance was implemented as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009. Subsidy policy proposed …

Finance Faculty Publications

Financial researchers initially regarded hedging activities as a means to reduce total firm risk, which often is defined in terms of cash flow volatility. More recently, researchers have focused on the strategic allocation of risk. Direct tests of risk allocation have been problematic, however, because hedging data are rarely available and, when available, are specific only to a single operation of the firm, such as bank lending. In this study, we exploit unique data from the insurance industry that allows us to observe hedging proxies for both investment and insurance underwriting risks and test the risk allocation hypothesis developed in …

Over 7,000 business establishments in Ohio employ 120,626 people in the Insurance Industry. Employment is expected to grow 1% a year to 2015, adding 6,323 workers, outpacing the national growth rate. In an analysis of the top ten states by employment size and industry concentration, Ohio is expected to grow at the second fastest pace.

Every year, the Insurance Industry has roughly 2,000 job openings for new and replacement jobs. The core of the industry is found in five occupations: insurance sales agents; claims adjusters, examiners, and investigators; insurance underwriters; insurance appraisers, auto damage; and actuaries.
