Background and objectives: Thirty million children are currently covered by public insurance; however, the future funding and structure of public insurance are uncertain. Our objective was to determine the number, estimated costs, and demographic characteristics of hospitalizations that would become ineligible for public insurance reimbursement under 3 federal poverty level (FPL) eligibility scenarios.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study using the 2014 State Inpatient Databases, we included all pediatric (age
Results: In 775 460 publicly reimbursed hospitalizations in 14 states, reductions in eligibility limits to 300%, 200%, or 100% of the FPL would have resulted in large numbers of newly …
Examining Moral Hazard In The Healthcare Insurance Market, Samuel Ashby
Examining Moral Hazard In The Healthcare Insurance Market, Samuel Ashby
Honors College Theses
This study aims to examine the effect of insurance coverage on medical expenditure in the United States. The data was gathered from the Household Component Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and is a cross-sectional data set with a sample size of approximately 1500 observations. The study also distinguishes between public and private insurance coverage to compare the potential moral hazard in the two separate markets. The results of this study suggest that insurance status, specifically public, has a strong positive effect on healthcare expenditure. This result, combined with a negative relationship between household income and healthcare expenditure, suggests that the source …

Evolution Of Insurance: A Telematics-Based Personal Auto Insurance Study, Yuanjing Yao
Honors Scholar Theses
Insurance has been constantly evolving since its inception; nowadays, insurance has become an indispensable part of people’s daily life. Nonetheless, very few individuals understand the mechanism behind their insurance coverage. This paper focuses on the evolution of personal auto insurances. The first part of the paper summarizes traditional pricing techniques for personal auto insurance and discusses their deficiencies. The second part of the paper introduces telematics insurance, an innovative form of auto insurance. This new kind of insurance integrates telematics as well as other technologies in the premium calculation process. The study proceeds to evaluate the pros and cons of …

On Central Branch/Reinsurance Risk Networks: Exact Results And Heuristics, Florin Avram, Sooie-Hoe Loke
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
Modeling the interactions between a reinsurer and several insurers, or between a central management branch (CB) and several subsidiary business branches, or between a coalition and its members, are fascinating problems, which suggest many interesting questions. Beyond two dimensions, one cannot expect exact answers. Occasionally, reductions to one dimension or heuristic simplifications yield explicit approximations, which may be useful for getting qualitative insights. In this paper, we study two such problems: the ruin problem for a two-dimensional CB network under a new mathematical model, and the problem of valuation of two-dimensional CB networks by optimal dividends. A common thread between …

Splitting The Bill: Estimating Personal Consumption In Case Of Wrongful Death, Kathleen Ellis, David I. Rosenbaum
Splitting The Bill: Estimating Personal Consumption In Case Of Wrongful Death, Kathleen Ellis, David I. Rosenbaum
UCARE: Research Products
In cases of wrongful death, the decedent’s survivors may sue alleged responsible parties for lost financial support. Forensic experts estimate a deceased individual’s personal consumption rate in order to separate the portion of the decedent’s income spent on him- or herself from the amount available as financial support for dependents. This paper enhances the prevailing estimation process by regressing consumption rates over individual households surveyed by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in its annual Consumer Expenditure Survey. We contend that this method improves the precision of estimates by accounting for the inherent heterogeneity in consumption among households with …

External Forces That Impact Profitability In The Insurance Industry, Christopher P. Pellegrino
Senior Honors Theses
The insurance industry is influenced by many factors that impact profitability. Insurers must do their best to make predictions based on expectations to remain solvent and profitable. Inevitably, they are faced with external factors that are outside of their control. Insurers must be aware of these external forces that may impact profits. External forces impact entire sub-industries of the insurance industry and some companies maintain profitability while others fail. This work intends to take a look at the major external forces that each insurance sub-industry faces and discuss some of the potential solutions that have been developed to minimize the …

Small And Medium Enterprises' Risk Exposures And Mitigation Approaches In Nigeria, Joshua Solomon Adeyele, Olubunmi Florence Osemene
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Risks militating against small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been on the increase due to how risks mitigations are conducted by the owners/operators. Although thorough understanding of businesses undertaken by the owners of SMEs enables them to have a clear picture of risks affecting their businesses so as to act in proactive manner in order to mitigate or avoid the impending risks. To assess the risk exposures of SMEs, a random sampling technique was used to select 209 SMEs within Lagos and Benin City. Both descriptive and inferential statistics such as Phi and Gamma were used to analyse the data …

System For Monitoring The Quality Of Services Provided By A Public Institution Based On Business Processes, Larisa A. Bulysheva, Mikhail Y. Kataev, Natalia V. Loseva
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Monitoring the quality of the services provided by public institutions is an important element in improving the effectiveness of the entire system of public services in the Russian Federation. As a rule, monitoring is associated with obtaining quantitative indicators of the level of satisfaction of citizens which characterize the quality of services provided. Monitoring results are the basis for modernizing the service management system. However, this approach allows us to evaluate only one side of the process by which a public institution renders services to the consumer of services (citizens). The other side of the issue is related to monitoring …

Terrorist Attacks On September 11, 2001: A Test Of Market Efficiency In The Insurance And Airline Industries, Chad Kozoyed
Longwood Senior Theses
How will the market react to an unforeseen event? How efficiently will it react to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001? This event study tests the semi-strong market efficiency theory by looking at the stock price returns of two samples of totaling 29 firms that were greatly affected by this event using the risk adjusted event study methodology. The evidence shows that both the insurance airline industries were greatly negatively affected on and after the event. However, it is clear to see that the firms in the airline industry were hurt a lot worse overall and their stock price …

Toward Better Management Of Flood Losses: Flood Insurance In A Wetter World, Michael K. Mcshane, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf
Finance Faculty Publications
Flood is the most frequent and costly of U.S. natural disasters with losses expected to increase due to climate change. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) mandates flood insurance purchase for properties with federally backed mortgages in the 100-year floodplain. We propose that mandatory flood insurance purchase be extended to all property in the 500-year floodplain. Following flood events, payments would be directly provided for more properties that suffer flood loss, reducing federal disaster aid spending. The mandate could put more pressure on local governments to increase their Community Rating System score, such as through infrastructure investments and management practices …

This comprehensive study of equity-linked insurance options will explore the pricing of certificates of deposit and life insurance options using a present value method. With this study, I will be able to construct and price various equity-linked insurance products, with a focus on life insurance, that insurance companies could then sell to prospective customers. I will use concepts and formulas based in actuarial math, probability theory, and financial engineering in order to construct, price, and analyze new equity-linked insurance products. The fundamental methodology I will use involves applying pricing theory based on the expected value of the insurance payoff present …

Self-Inflicted Injuries: Designation For Risk Assessment Or Cost Avoidance, Brianna M. Robertson, Ralph E. Mckinney Jr., Lawrence P. Shao
Psychiatry
This paper considers the denial of health insurance benefits based on a participant's high-risk behaviors such as self-inflicted injuries. In many instances, healthcare benefits can be denied if patients are injured while engaging in criminal activities, from a self-infliction, and from injuries relating to the consumption of alcohol. With increases in healthcare expenditures and government regulation, the necessity for benefit reductions is directed at individuals engaging in high-risk behaviors. The belief is that high-risk behaviors can be modified by individuals. Unfortunately, modification of behaviors may not be available to everyone.

Business Interruption (BI) insurance is not popular among the operators/owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. This study is an attempt to investigate causes of SMEs’ failure and to assist the owners on how to use BI to protect both the physical assets as well as future profits of their businesses. Hence, 389 SMEs were purposively selected from four major cities in Niger Delta Region (NDR) in Nigeria for this purpose. The statistical tools used for analysis were Phi and Cramer’s V. The extent of SMEs losses through means of sourcing for materials and strategy employed to transfer …
