While a multitude of Internet enterprises folded in the 1990s, online gambling websites not only have held strong, but appear to be ready to increase the stakes. No business relating to the Internet currently generates more revenue than online gambling, and that trend does not look like it will change soon. The legislative gaps in international eCommerce and specifically in the gambling industry mean that many consumers face the market condition of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). In terms of consumer psychology, caveat emptor increases consumer perceptions of risk and slows the diffusion of Internet gambling. This paper discusses the specific risks associated with Internet gambling and presents an industry structure designed to off-set consumer perceptions of perceived risk through industry self regulation and alternative dispute management techniques.

The State of Nevada, to retain its position as pace setter in U.S. casino gaming regulation, took important legislative steps to prepare for online gambling. When these legal efforts were discouraged or blocked by the U. S. Department of Justice a new direction emerged. This article traces the shift from implementing online gambling across state lines to intrastate gaming within Nevada with hand-held devices in auxiliary areas of a casino complex beyond the casino floor. Regulatory issues are raised and prospects for inaugurating interactive gaming are discussed.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) continues to attract increasing attention within the casino industry. While the vital role of change management in making CRM projects successful has been acknowledged for quite some time, there is little in extant literature to explain the nature and conduct of change management in the CRM context. This article posits that relevant change management is a prerequisite for successful implementation of a casino's CRM. Residents' Perceptions Of Casino Development In Korea: The Kangwon Land Casino Case, Ki-Joon Back, Choong-Ki Lee

This study was developed to examine the underlying relationships among the socio-demographic variables of casino community residents, the perceptions of potential benefits and costs, and the support for casino development based on the social exchange theory. The results show that social and economic benefits were most significant in determining the level of support for casino development. None of the demographic variables significantly affected support level. Based on the results of this study, casino operators and policymakers should make efforts to minimize the negative social factors and maximize social and economic benefits if they want support from residents for further development …

There has been an increased need for gaming managers to source and use relevant information to assist them in managing their venues. Gaming managers have been under pressure from governments, the welfare sector, local communities and the media to manage gaming activities in a socially responsible manner. This paper reports on a study into the information needs of a selection of gaming managers of clubs, hotels and casinos in two Australian states. Gambling Participation And Prevalence Estimates Of Pathological Gambling In A Far-East Gambling City: Macao, Davis Ka-Chio Fong, Bernadete Ozorio

This research is the first scientific study of gambling participation and pathological gambling in Macao. In 2003, a computer-assisted random digit dialing method was used to conduct 1,121 telephone interviews. Two-thirds of respondents expressed that they have participated in at least one of the fourteen forms of gambling in the past year. The three most popular forms of gambling include social gambling, Mark Six lottery, and soccer/basketball betting. As for the prevalence of pathological gambling, the Chinese DSM-IV Gambling Behavior Index was used as the screening tool and results indicate that 1.78% of respondents are classified as probable pathological gamblers …

Estimating The Short-Term Effects Of An Increase In Par On Reel Slot Performance, Anthony F. Lucas, Karl D. Brandmeir

Data from a US hotel casino are analyzed to examine the validity of a controversial theory holding that reel slot players are unable to perceive substantial increases in par (i.e., a hidden price). The results of a multiple regression analysis support this theory. A 50% increase in the pars of a $5.00 reel sample, failed to significantly affect the performance of these games. The control-group games featured 5.0% pars, while the experiment-group pars were set at 7.5%. Descriptive statistics show that the theoretical win per unit actually increased at the 7.5% par. In Australia, the state of Queensland introduced a voluntary Responsible Gambling Code of Practice in 2002. This investigation examines levels of implementation and perceptions of adequacy of the Code in casinos, hotels and licensed clubs in three Queensland regions. It involved on-site inspections of 30 venues and semi-structured interviews with 35 venue managers and staff. The level of implementation varied but most venues had implemented between 40 and 60 percent of the Code's practices. Managers' perceptions of the adequacy of the Code's practices revealed that some practices, such as physical layout of the venue, were considered much more effective than …

The purpose of this article is to map the social landscape of the burgeoning fantasy baseball gaming phenomenon. This study relies upon two approaches: an analysis of the existing gambling literature to look for useful theory and research applications, and observations of fantasy baseball players to better understand their behaviors. The authors seek to provide an exploratory framework that will aid in the development of future theory and research on these phenomena.

Debates surrounding casino gaming development in the US often are based on the assumption that the opening of a casino is followed by an increase in crime in the host community and surrounding areas. This paper examined crime volume in Detroit, Michigan and neighboring communities before, during and after the three Detroit casinos opened. Findings indicated that total Index Crime offenses did not increase in Detroit. However, it appeared that the volume of certain types of crime slightly increased while others decreased. Considerable research in recent years has examined the influence of physical evidence, or atmosphere, in a variety of service settings, including leisure services. Not fully covered has been the area of atmosphere in a casino gaming setting. This extension of a previous study further investigates atmospherics in casinos. The findings showed that customers defined casino atmosphere in five key elements: theme, floor layout, ceiling height, employee uniforms, and noise level. Three of the five contributed positively to a player's satisfaction with the gaming experience as shown by the regression analysis. This article discusses the viability of targeting heavy spenders on non-gaming products and services in gaming travel marketing. A sample of visitors to two commercial casinos was divided into light, medium and heavy spenders based on spending per person per day, excluding gambling. Findings indicated that a large number of heavy-spending tourists were not interested in gaming, but in the destination's other tourism products. This suggests that the region's tourism assets play an important role in enhancing casino visitation. Promoting the casino as part of the overall tourism attractions may benefit both the casino and related businesses in the community.

This paper aims to explain why responsible provision of gambling is an important corporate social issue facing many gambling providers by examining its status with reference to three characteristic features of such issues proposed in the corporate social responsibility literature--expectational gaps, impacts and controversy (Wartick and Mahon, 1994). The existence of expectational gaps, impacts and controversy relating to contemporary gambling operations thus clarifies why gambling providers are under pressure to manage their gambling operations in a more socially responsible manner.
