This issue of the New England Journal of Public Policy had many beginnings and, like most efforts in which a theme is slowly resolved, probably should not have an ending.

The discussion of this theme started several years ago when a group of senior Boston businesswomen talked about the need and value of meeting on a semi-regular basis. Their purpose would be to focus discussions on a narrow but important issue — the economic advancement of women.

A factor analytic methodology is used to measure and interpret the evaluative criteria used by the functional roles represented in an industrial decision making unit during their consideration to purchase a piece of capital equipment. The results of the study indicate that the criteria employed by each decision maker during the evaluation of this equipment varied by functional role. The attributes contained in each evaluative dimension were directly related to each functional role primary job responsibility.

This project looks at a local small business and how advertising played a role in its success. The student does research of the retail market and conducts surveys to gauge the consumers. From there, the student uses their findings to design and produce an advertisement campaign for the business. They say that, “the experience was valuable and I did find myself thinking through the research in search of marketing ideas.” They overall did not have success in the advertisement but instead success in the experience and value of learning from trial and error.

An educational institution, called Business XYZ for this study, experienced rising premium costs for workers' compensation insurance that climbed steadily for several years and jumped sharply in 1984 and 1985. In order to keep operating costs down, the administrative officers felt ways must be found to reduce the costs of workers' compensation for this business.

The purpose of this study was to look at the overall situation involving workers' compensation claims and costs at Business XYZ across the period of years the premiums rose so dramatically and to determine causes and solutions to the problem of high workers' compensation costs. …

The motivation for such a study stems from a long-standing concern within academe for a better understanding of the relationships between student quality, faculty effort, campus environment, and the end result of an "educated" person.
