Creating A Support System For Online Graduate Students Learning New Software, Marisha C. Kelly

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

This poster outlines strategies for creating a support system for online graduate students learning new software. The Northcentral University (NCU) Library is a 100 percent online library providing services and delivering resources to students in a remote context. According to university facts and figures, approximately 98 percent of students are enrolled in a graduate program and nearly 69 percent of those students are pursuing a doctoral degree. In May 2019, a reference and instruction librarian developed a program to support graduate students learning how to use ProQuest RefWorks, a web-based research management tool. Elements of the program include synchronous options …

The Remainder Effect: How Automation Complements Labor Quality, James Bessen, Erich Denk, Chen Meng Feb 2022

The Remainder Effect: How Automation Complements Labor Quality, James Bessen, Erich Denk, Chen Meng

Faculty Scholarship

This paper argues that automation both complements and replaces workers. Extending the Acemoglu-Restrepo model of automation to consider labor quality, we obtain a Remainder Effect: while automation displaces labor on some tasks, it raises the returns to skill on remaining tasks across skill groups. This effect increases between-firm pay inequality while labor displacement affects within-firm inequality. Using job ad data, we find firm adoption of information technologies leads to both greater demand for diverse skills and higher pay across skill groups. This accounts for most of the sorting of skills to high paying firms that is central to rising inequality.

Three Essays On Behaviors In Crowdsourcing Communities, Ali Simaei Gargari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the last decade, the interest in studying crowdsourcing platforms has dramatically increased among researchers in the information systems (IS) area. My dissertation includes three essays on crowdsourcing. The first essay provides an extensive literature review on crowdsourcing and shows several gaps in the literature. The second essay highlights the gaps in the literature on innovation contest platforms and draws on the organizational learning literature to fill the gaps. In this research, I draw on the organizational learning literature to study the undelying dynamics of specialization and variation in innovation contest platforms. Using data of nearly 35000 users' participation history …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 23, 2022, Eric Thompson Feb 2022

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 23, 2022, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The LEI-N rose by 0.58% during January 2022. The increase in the leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic activity six months in the future, signals moderate economic growth in Nebraska through the summer of 2022. The indicator improved for three primary reasons. There were positive business expectations in January according to respondents to the monthly Survey of Nebraska Business. Initial claims for unemployment insurance also fell during the month as a sign of strength for the labor market. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell, which is helpful for Nebraska businesses that compete in international markets.

Initial Public Offering And Optimal Corporate Governance, Albert H. Choi Feb 2022

Initial Public Offering And Optimal Corporate Governance, Albert H. Choi

Law & Economics Working Papers

This paper examines the long-standing debate over whether firms have a market-based incentive to adopt optimal governance provisions at their initial public offering (IPO). Various scholars and practitioners have argued that firms that offer stock to the public with suboptimal governance structure will be penalized by the market through a lower IPO price. At the same time, others have documented empirical evidence that many IPO firms have putatively suboptimal governance provisions, such as anti-takeover provisions and dual class structure, and many, especially those with dual-class structure, enjoy a market premium at their IPO. This paper attempts to bridge this gap. …

Monetary Policy, Financial Shocks And Economic Activity, Anastasios Evgenidis, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper contributes to a fuller understanding of macroeconomic outcomes to financial market disturbances and the central bank’s role in financial stability. Our two major contributions are conceptual and econometric. Conceptually, we introduce phases of the business cycle and econometrically we employ Bayesian VARs. We document that a shock that increases credit to non-financial sector leads to a persistent decline in economic activity. In addition, we examine whether the behavior of financial variables is useful in signaling the 2007–2009 recession. The answer is positive as our BVAR generates early warning signals pointing to a sustained slowdown in growth. We propose …

Does A New Product Development Project’S Name Influence Internal Stakeholder Commitment?, Dianna Akin

College of Business Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore whether a new product development project’s name and or charter effects commitment of senior management sponsors, product development team members and project leaders to the project. Leveraging signaling, internal marketing and imprinting theory to influence internal stakeholder project commitment, I executed three studies to 1) evaluate the validity of my research, 2) identify strong and weak project names, and strong and weak project charters, and 3) a 2x2 between-subjects experiment to test the main effect of project name, the main effect of project charter, and the interaction effect of project charter strength …

Understanding The Effects Of Environment, Social, And Governance Conduct On Financial Performance: Arguments For A Process And Integrated Modelling Approach, Michael T. Lee, Ikseon Suh Feb 2022

Understanding The Effects Of Environment, Social, And Governance Conduct On Financial Performance: Arguments For A Process And Integrated Modelling Approach, Michael T. Lee, Ikseon Suh

Department of Accounting Faculty Research

To date, an overwhelming number of research findings on Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) conduct and financial performance remains inconclusive. Furthermore, research has not identified nor explained the “underlying mechanisms” behind this relationship. To encourage future research, we discuss the mechanisms by identifying the first-order, mediating, and moderating variables. We synthesize recent studies for emerging themes and implications; argue for a process and integrated approach for modelling causality between ESG conduct and financial performance variables; and suggest methods to analyze the models. We also advocate for researchers to explore the idea that balancing corporate conduct among the E, S, and …

We understand that the case study method was used appropriate to analyze in-depth phenomena concerning the perspective of strategy as practice. Both, the method, and the strategy as practice perspective look at the phenomena in their singularity. This study contributes …

The Economic Circumstances Of Sexual Minority Women In Utah, Claudia Geist, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

When thinking of gender inequality in Utah, many people immediately consider the difficulties of combining motherhood and employment,1 sexism in everyday life,2 or recent studies that have deemed Utah to be the “worst” state for gender equality.3 Further, women of color have different experiences than white women, as they experience racism and gender discrimination at the intersection of both.4 Inequalities in economic outcomes based on race and ethnicity are well documented5 and shed light on the fact that “women” are not a monolithic category. This snapshot focuses on an axis of inequality that has been …
