Today’s job market sees rapid changes due to technology and business model disruptions. To fully tap on one’s potential in career development, one has to acquire job and skill knowledge through working on different jobs. Another approach is to seek consultation with career coaches who are trained to offer career advice in various industry sectors. The above two approaches, nevertheless, suffer from several shortcomings. The on-the-job career development approach is highly inefficient for today’s fast changing job market. The latter career coach assisted approach could help to speed up knowledge acquisition but it relies on expertise of career coaches but …

Double Learning Or Double Blinding: An Investigation Of Vendor Private Information Acquisition And Consumer Learning Via Online Reviews, Nan Hu, Kevin E. Dow, Alain Yee Loong Chong, Ling Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, building upon information acquisition theory and using portfolio methods and system equations, we made an empirical investigation into how online vendors and consumers are learning from each other, and how online reviews, prices, and sales interact among each other. First, this study shows that vendors acquire information from both private and public channels to learn the quality of their products to make price adjustment. Second, for the more popular products and newly released products, vendors are more motivated to acquire private information that is more precise than the average precision to adjust their price. Third, we document …

Differentiated B2b Marketing Strategy Of Dongwon Systems, The No.1 Packaging Solution Company In Korea, Mina Jun, Sang Yong Kim, Janghyuk Lee, Koo
Asia Marketing Journal
Dongwon Systems established in 1977 to exclusively supply Dongwon tuna cans, the parent company. Instead of its stable management and profits by relying on the parent company, the company was not complacent and started innovating and challenging new markets. Dongwon Systems decided to expand the business area and pioneer new markets so that it becomes the first domestic company to successfully expand into independent businesses other than parent company products. Such success of Dongwon Systems was driven by its differentiated B2B strategies. Unlike the characteristics of usual B2B companies, Dongwon Systems has been thinking both of its client companies and …

Are Mexican And U.S. Workers Complements Or Substitutes?, Raymond Robertson
Are Mexican And U.S. Workers Complements Or Substitutes?, Raymond Robertson
Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research
Fears of NAFTA in the United States were largely based on the belief that Mexicans and U.S. workers were substitutes: lowering barriers would allow competing products into the United States and investment outflows that would cause U.S. workers to lose their jobs to Mexico. While this may have been true when NAFTA first went into effect, subsequent production specialization between Mexico and the United States may suggest that Mexican and U.S. workers are now complements. In particular, NAFTA may have induced production restructuring throughout North America to generate integrated value chains in which workers in the three NAFTA countries work …
Customer-Contact Employee Support And Service Recovery Efforts, Younhee Moon
Customer-Contact Employee Support And Service Recovery Efforts, Younhee Moon
Asia Marketing Journal
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of customer-contact employees support on service recovery efforts. Service companies should try to prevent the service failure situation from occurring, but it is realistic that the service failure occurs due to the characteristics of the service. Service recovery efforts of service providers are important because effective responses to service failures can enhance customer satisfaction despite service failures. Social support for customer-contact employees needs to improve service recovery efforts. Specifically, this study focuses on the mediation roles of job burnout and customer orientation in relationship between social support for customer-contact employees …
The Dark Side Of Star Marketing, Hojoon Jang, Kyoungmi Lee
The Dark Side Of Star Marketing, Hojoon Jang, Kyoungmi Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
This research examines how the announcement of a celebrity endorsement contract with a brand can influence consumers’ judgment of its future growth in a market. Using both behavioral experiments and an event study analysis, we find that when the brand is perceived to be technology-focused (versus marketing-focused), the information about the celebrity contract can lead consumers to view the brand’s future as less promising. Furthermore, we identify consumers’ inferences about the quality of the brand as a psychological factor underlying this effect. This paper provides evidence that star-marketing can sometimes signal management’s misjudgment about resource allocation for a brand, which …

The Impact Of Salesperson Look-Brand Personality Congruence On Brand Affect, Heekyung Lee, Youjae Yi
Asia Marketing Journal
Branded service encounters, in which various aspects of frontline employees are strategically aligned with the firm’s brand positioning, can be achieved along several dimensions such as employee appearance, manner, and personality. While previous research has mainly focused on behavioral traits of employees, this research examines the employee’s physical appearance in association with the brand personality trait across two studies. Study 1 shows that salesperson look-brand personality congruence enhances brand affect by inducing positive affect. Specifically, a brand-congruent look of a salesperson increases positive affect among customers by confirming their prior expectations about what a salesperson of a certain brand should …

Exploring Consumers’ Alcoholic-Beverage Type-Specific Drinking Motives, Hyejeung Cho
Asia Marketing Journal
Despite the abundance of research on alcoholic-beverage consumption in the food and beverage marketing literature, research directly assessing and comparing consumers’ psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages is relatively limited. There is also a paucity of research comparing drink-type specific consumption motivations in an Asian market. Paying attention to some recent new changes in the alcoholic-beverages market of South Korea, this study investigated South Korean young adult female consumers’ alcoholic-beverage type-specific drinking motives. A self-administered online survey of 340 young adult female drinkers about their alcohol-consumption patterns, alcoholic-drink preferences, involvement with alcohol, and four types of drinking …

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
The aim of this study was to explore to what extent life styles, income, and health factors contribute to the life satisfaction of Hispanic older adults. A secondary data analysis from a national survey of Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (HEPESE) (Markides, Ray, Angel, & Espino, 2012) was used. Subjects were Hispanic older adults (over 75 years, n = 1542). For this study, Hispanics and Latinos were considered as one and the same. A two-step hierarchical regression was conducted to address the research question. The results showed health status and income were unique predictors in …

'Chasing Portraits'
JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 30,2018) – Over 70 years ago, as Moshe Rynecki watched Hitler’s regime becoming more and more ominous, the Jewish art store owner and artist began bundling his 800-or-so paintings and sculptures and seeking safe places for his life’s work in and around his home of Warsaw, Poland.
“Moshe hid his work with the notion that whatever this was – nobody knew it was the World War and the Holocaust – when it was over, he would collect his paintings and his collection would be whole once again … and that’s not at all what happened,” …

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 15, 2018) – White curtains frame a ’50s-style diner table with red vinyl bench seats and a cup of coffee. Leafless trees, patchy snow, empty warehouses and unmanned equipment dot the Hudson River’s edge. Dark clouds loom over a weathered yellow house rimmed with weeds, featuring an unwelcoming “Private Property” sign in the yard.
Tema Stauffer’s lens sees barns collapsing, weeds encroaching, structures deteriorating, cars rusting and world-worn eyes staring, long after history has been made and nature often has reclaimed the landscape. There are both a haunted quality and an eerie sense of peace. …

By employing institutional logics theory, this study scrutinizes academics and business practitioners as institutions and the cultural context embedded within them. Methodology - A mixed method of newspaper data analysis and semi-structured interviews was used to obtain comprehensive data from both sources. Research findings - The findings suggest a definite orientation gap between business practitioners, associations, and academics—the three groups have less information and contributions compared with the government and association influences. This study concludes that more participation is needed from these …

Growth Options And Corporate Goodness, Linh Thompson
Growth Options And Corporate Goodness, Linh Thompson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I find evidence to support the negative impact of growth options on corporate social responsibility (CSR). I propose that attention-constrained managers reduce corporate goodness to focus on growth opportunities. The effect is more pronounced for well-governed firms, for financially-constrained firms, and for capital-intensive social dimensions. Firms reduce their research and development (R&D) and capital expenditures, and experience lower annual buy-and-hold abnormal returns (BHAR) subsequent to significant increases in their social performance. I also report value implications of CSR investments. The empirical evidence suggests that managerial choices to divert attention from growth projects toward CSR hurt shareholders.
Impact Of Airplane Crashes On Firm's Credit Risk Under The Creditgrades Model, Alexandros Bougias
Impact Of Airplane Crashes On Firm's Credit Risk Under The Creditgrades Model, Alexandros Bougias
Undergraduate Economic Review
The paper examines the impact of airplane accidents with 40 or more fatalities, on airline's firm credit risk. The sample contains 20 airplane crashes for the period 2000-2017. The analysis proposes the CreditGrades model introduced by Finger et al. (2002) , which is an extension of the first passage time model of Black and Cox (1976). The study concludes that airplane accidents lead to a statistically significant increase in airline's Probability of Default. The results are both significant and robust under the t-Test and the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-rank test.

Understanding Long-Standing Belief Systems In Business: A Qualitative Study Of The Equine Industry, Robyn Lord
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Change management is a highly researched topic. With industry changing at record speed, it is inevitable that corporations will engage in a change management endeavor. As humans innately resist change at first exposure, corporations strive to acquire knowledge in adoption. It may not be enough to understand status quo proponents, but rather their underlying long-standing belief systems which may be affecting how they view change. What makes an employee resist corporate change? Most studies conclude that humans will resist innately. This research dives into the unique environment of the equine industry to uncover how long-standing belief systems contribute to adoption …

Teams As Boundaries: How Intra‐Team And Inter‐Team Brokerage Influence Network Changes In Knowledge‐Seeking Networks, Prasad Balkundi, Lei Wang, Rajiv Kishore
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
What role does an ego's brokerage location—within a team (intra‐team) or outside the team (inter‐team)—play in the evolution of an instrumental knowledge‐seeking network in terms of both proximal (i.e., within the team) and distal (i.e., outside the team) tie formation and tie decay? We address this question by drawing on literature about social networks, brokerage, and teams. We use temporally separated data from 302 students embedded in 97 teams to test our hypotheses about the impacts of intra‐team and inter‐team brokerage on proximal and distal network evolution, specifically on four network changes in knowledge‐seeking networks: proximal tie formation, proximal tie …
