Substance use disorders, including the opioid epidemic, have reached crisis levels throughout the United States, and Utah is no exception. In 2017, more than 72,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, a number that has doubled in the past decade. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 635 Utahns died from a drug overdose in 2016; that is 22.4 per 100,00 population, a rate that was above the national average of 19.8 and the 19th highest in the nation for that year. Although in Utah and the U.S. as a whole, men are more likely to die from a drug overdose, …

Market Share Growth And Stock Returns, Jaideep Chowdhury, Gokhan Sonaer, Umut Celiker

We find a negative relationship between market share growth and subsequent stock returns, three- and four-factor alphas. We report the potential explanatory role of market share growth in explaining subsequent average monthly stock returns. High (Low) market share growth firms report good (poor) operating performance and positive (negative) SUEs in the quarter in which market share growth is measured and investors overact to that good (bad) news. However, high (low) market share growth firms experience decrease (increase) in operating performance and SUEs in the subsequent quarters resulting in corrections in investors’ expectations and subsequent lower (higher) stock returns.

Bounded Rationality And The Choice Of Jury Selection Procedures, Martin Van Der Linden

A peremptory-challenge procedure allows the parties to a jury trial to dismiss some prospective jurors without justification. Complex challenge procedures offer an unfair advantage to parties who are better able to strategize. I introduce a new measure of strategic complexity based on level-k thinking and use this measure to compare challenge procedures often used in practice. In applying this measure, I overturn some commonly held beliefs about which jury selection procedures are strategically simple.

Online Social Contagion In Politically Charged Consumer Boycotts, Maria Petrescu

The purpose of this study is to analyze the implications of social contagion in consumer boycotts from the angle of political movements, and the influence of politically charged causes on consumer boycotting behavior. We explore the central themes of discussion that appear in consumer social media talk about boycotts, as well as analyze the impact of political events on boycott movements, by using social media data and analytics from Twitter and Google Insights. The findings emphasize the elevated levels of negativity in consumer Twitter discussions about boycotting organizations in politically charged settings, and emotional aspects and common expressions and phrases …

There are many reasons why film and media scholars ought to take merchandise seriously. That filmrelated merchandise is a lucrative part of the film business is only a starting point, but still a good place to start. In 2018, character and entertainment licensing accounted for 44.7% of retail sales of licensed merchandise, generating $121.53 billion in sales. [1] [#N1] This earned entertainment companies approximately $6.2 billion in royalties. These end-of-semester performances kick off with the Country Band Showcase on Friday, Nov. 30.  A mixture of different bluegrass, old-time and Celtic bands will take the stage on Saturday, Dec. 1, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 4-5.  Bands led by students doing their capstone projects in band leadership will perform on Monday, Dec. 3.

During the negotiations, there is a tax over payment remitted abroad that involves agreements between countries. As firms continue to invest in IT resources and collaborate with key suppliers, many fail to benefit from these activities. Drawing on resource orchestration theory and the relational view of interfirm competitive advantage, we examine the contingent relationships among IT resources, key supplier involvement, and the focal firm's performance. Using a multi-informants dataset from the manufacturing sector in China, we find that supplier involvement mediates the positive effect of IT resources on the focal firm's performance only when there is a high level of mutual trust and when competitive intensity is low in the focal firm's environment.
