Two broad sets of activities underlie team innovation: the creation and the implementation of new ideas. Despite the prevalence of this distinction, the temporal dynamics of creativity and implementation in teams and their relation to successful team innovation are not well understood. Building on and integrating linear phase models and complexity perspectives on the innovation process, we propose a temporal pattern of creativity and implementation that is linked to team innovation. We examine this temporal pattern in a longitudinal study of 76 project teams. Results show that teams engage in creativity throughout the entire life cycle of team projects; however, …

Ethnic Ties, Motivations, And Home Country Entry Strategy Of Transnational Entrepreneurs, Sarika Pruthi, Anuradha Basu, Mike Wright

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Based on 30 in-depth interviews with Indian transnational entrepreneurs (TEs) in the USA and their corresponding India heads of operations, we explore the influence of TEs’ ethnic ties on their motivations and entry strategy in the formation of transnational ventures in their home country. Our findings show the heterogeneity of TEs’ motivations (economic and emotional) and home country entry strategy (proactive and reactive). Further, we find that TEs’ entry strategy is contingent on their (a) use of professional and personal ethnic ties and (b) prior experience of doing business with the home country. We examine how international variation in corporate future-oriented behavior, such as corporate social responsibility and research and development investment, could partially stem from characteristics of the languages spoken at firms. We develop a future-time framing perspective rooted in the literatures on organizational categorization and framing. Our theory and hypotheses focus on how companies with working languages that obligatorily separate the future tense and the present tense engage less in future-oriented behaviors, and this effect is attenuated by exposure to multilingual environments. This paper examines how policies at several research universities support and professionalize their full-time, non-tenure track (NTT) instructional faculty, and considers the influence of NTT faculty unions on policy development at these institutions. Faculty handbooks, collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), and other policy documents at a few institutions with and without CBAs were analyzed for the presence of institutional, NTT faculty-supportive policies. One unionized and one non-unionized institution were selected as sites for interviews with faculty and administrators. ABSTRACT

As state funding to community colleges has fluctuated, many community colleges have hired more adjunct faculty (Desrochers & Hurlburt, 2014).

This qualitative research explored supplemental benefits, which could be included in adjunct faculty contracts with community colleges in order to promote workplace satisfaction, without causing stress on budgets. Adjunct faculty who realize greater job satisfaction are more beneficial to their institutions because they promote student learning and retention (CCCSE, 2014b; Hollenshead, 2010; Jacoby, 2006).

This article presents a history of unionization and collective bargaining in higher education during and just after World War II, decades before the establishment of statutory frameworks for labor representation. It examines the collective bargaining program adopted by the University of Illinois in 1945, along with contracts negotiated at other institutions, which demonstrated support for employee self-organization. It will also presents counter-examples of institutions using the courts and congressional investigators to defeat unionization efforts. . Anti-intellectual pressures on colleges and universities are not only external; they are generated by colleges and universities themselves. The corporatization agenda, seen in calls to run universities "more like businesses," has produced a managerial approach to education that is fundamentally hostile to free intellectual endeavor. The idea that higher education is not about the common good, but about individual improvement is a major source of anti-intellectualism. The appropriate response to an overly "practical" vision of education, however, is not to retreat into an ivory tower. That higher education may not be considered unique by various courts, labor boards, arbitrators, law firms, and others who facilitate (control) the labor relations process is a decidedly unpopular notion among many academic leaders, faculty, and others. I would argue that universities are organizations providing important individual and societal outcomes which can be measured, but may not be unique for the purposes of labor relations.

Primed For Death: Law Enforcement-Citizen Homicides, Social Media, And Retaliatory Violence, Vladimir Bejan, Matthew Hickman, William S. Parkin, Veronica F. Pozo

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

We examine whether retaliatory violence exists between law enforcement and citizens while controlling for any social media contagion effect related to prior fatal encounters. Analyzed using a trivariate dynamic structural vector-autoregressive model, daily time-series data over a 21-month period captured the frequencies of police killed in the line of duty, police deadly use of force incidents, and social media coverage. The results support a significant retaliatory violence effect against minorities by police, yet there is no evidence of retaliatory violence against law enforcement officers by minorities. Integrated regional water management (IRWM) is an approach to water resource management in California that is being strongly promoted by the State as a way to increase regional self-sufficiency. IRWM offers an approach for managing the uncertainties that lie ahead, particularly in light of climate change.
