Why Do Self-Initiated Expatriates Quit Their Jobs: The Role Of Job Embeddedness And Shocks In Explaining Turnover Intentions, Taiba Hussain, Stephen Deery

All Works

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd Retaining self-initiated expatriates is a challenge for many organizations. Self-made expatriates tend to be mobile. They are willing to manage their own careers and to take up opportunities to live and work in countries of their own choice. Despite their importance as a source of human capital there are few studies on the work experiences of self-initiated expatriates and on the factors that affect their decisions to stay or leave their jobs. This article examined the effects of both job embeddedness and shocks on the turnover intention of self-initiated expatriates. Drawing on a sample of 204 …

Bridging Academic And Practice: Benefits, Challenges And Lessons Learnt From Establishing A University Wide Experiential Learning Initiative, Gary Pan, Poh Sun Seow, Grace Koh

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The scale and complexity of challenges facing the world today are unprecedented. It is paramount that universities identify and equip students with relevant skills to meet the needs of the changing economy. Recognizing this need, Singapore Management University launched a new initiative, SMUX. In this paper we will describe SMU-X which is a paradigm shift focusing on experiential learning as opposed to teaching, characterized by 4 principles: (i) inter-disciplinary content and activities, (ii) project-based learning via an actual problem/issue faced by an organization, (iii) active student mentoring by faculty and industry, and (iv) creating a tripartite learning loop between faculty, …

Contextual Leadership: A Systematic Review Of How Contextual Factors Shape Leadership And Its Outcomes, Burak Oc Feb 2018

Contextual Leadership: A Systematic Review Of How Contextual Factors Shape Leadership And Its Outcomes, Burak Oc

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With roots dating back to Fiedler’s (1978) contingency model, contextual leadership has been one of the most trending topics in leadership research over the last decade. However, although roughly 500 studies have examined the impact of context on leadership and its outcomes, there is neither a systematic approach to nor agreement regarding what constitutes the context for leadership. This is surprising, considering the central role that context plays in leadership: Leadership does not occur in a vacuum, but rather exists in a context where leaders function. This review article uses Johns’s (2006) categorical framework to fully portray the leadership context …

Evolution Of Digital Payments: Early Learnings From Singapore’S Cashless Payment Drive, Dennis Ng Feb 2018

Evolution Of Digital Payments: Early Learnings From Singapore’S Cashless Payment Drive, Dennis Ng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper discusses the digital payment scenario unfolding in Singapore as the country’s government ponders the tremendous leap made by China in the digital payment space. The paper discusses possible key factors contributing to the success of digital payments in China, such as the success of WeChat, and whether this could be replicated in a country like Singapore. Although China and Singapore are vastly different in size, they share many similarities, including a strong one-party government which is actively involved in the direction and growth of the economy. Both countries share similar cultural and social influences including materialism, IT adoption …

Do Alpha Males Deliver Alpha? Facial Structure And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Melvyn Teo Feb 2018

Do Alpha Males Deliver Alpha? Facial Structure And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Facial structure as encapsulated by facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) maps onto masculine behaviors in males and may positively relate to testosterone. We find that high-fWHR hedge fund managers underperform low-fWHR hedge fund managers by 5.83% per year after adjusting for risk. Moreover, funds operated by high-fWHR managers exhibit higher operational risk, suffer from a greater asset-liability mismatch, and are more likely to fail. We trace the underperformance to high-fWHR managers’ preference for lottery-like stocks and reluctance to sell loser stocks. The results are robust to adjustments for sample selection, marital status, sensation seeking, and manager race, and suggest that investors …

The Capacity To Innovate: A Meta Analysis Of Absorptive Capacity, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Gerard George Feb 2018

The Capacity To Innovate: A Meta Analysis Of Absorptive Capacity, Tengjian Zou, Gokhan Ertug, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

For nearly 30 years, ACAP has been the bedrock of theories of innovation. A meta-analysis is timely to glean insights from the rich empirical evidence to date and guide future work on the topic. Our meta-analysis of 241 studies reveals that ACAP is a strong predictor of innovation and knowledge transfer, and that its effects on financial performance are fully mediated by these two outcomes. As different from most theoretical discourse, we also find that the firm size-ACAP relationship is positive for small firms but negative for larger firms and that the firm age-ACAP relationship is negative for mature firms …

Risk Propensity In The Foreign Direct Investment Location Decision Of Emerging Multinationals, Peter J. Buckley, Liang Chen, L. Jeremy Clegg, Hinrich Voss Feb 2018

Risk Propensity In The Foreign Direct Investment Location Decision Of Emerging Multinationals, Peter J. Buckley, Liang Chen, L. Jeremy Clegg, Hinrich Voss

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A distinguishing feature of emerging economy multinationals is their apparent tolerance for host country institutional risk. Employing behavioral decision theory and quasi-experimental data, we find that managers' domestic experience satisfaction increases their relative risk propensity regarding controllable risk (legally protectable loss), but decreases their tendency to accept noncontrollable risk (e.g., political instability). In contrast, firms' potential slack reduces relative risk propensity regarding controllable risk, yet amplifies the tendency to take noncontrollable risk. We suggest that these counterbalancing effects might help explain prior ambiguous findings on the relationship between experience, slack, and FDI decisions. The study provides a new understanding of …

The Value Of Green Certification In The Singapore Housing Market, Eric Fesselmeyer Feb 2018

The Value Of Green Certification In The Singapore Housing Market, Eric Fesselmeyer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In Singapore, a real estate developer sells new apartments in the same high-rise development before and after obtaining green certification. This allows the use of within-development variation in prices over time to measure the effect of green certification on housing prices, controlling for differences across developments. I find that green certification increases prices by around 3%, suggesting that buyers value certification, possibly because it signals the presence of less-salient green features. Moreover, the effect of certification is biggest for developments that receive the lowest green rating, which likely have fewer green features and are thus less obviously green.

In most cities, taxis play an important role in providing point-to-point transportation service. If the taxi service is reliable, responsive, and cost-effective, past studies show that taxi-like services can be a viable choice in replacing a significant amount of private cars. However, making taxi services efficient is extremely challenging, mainly due to the fact that taxi drivers are self-interested and they operate with only local information. Although past research has demonstrated how recommendation systems could potentially help taxi drivers in improving their performance, most of these efforts are not feasible in practice. This is mostly due to the lack of …

Modelling Domain Relationships For Transfer Learning On Retrieval-Based Question Answering Systems In E-Commerce, Jianfei Yu, Minghui Qiu, Jing Jiang, Jun Huang, Shuangyong Song, Wei Chu, Haiqing Chen Feb 2018

Modelling Domain Relationships For Transfer Learning On Retrieval-Based Question Answering Systems In E-Commerce, Jianfei Yu, Minghui Qiu, Jing Jiang, Jun Huang, Shuangyong Song, Wei Chu, Haiqing Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, it is a heated topic for many industries to build automatic question-answering (QA) systems. A key solution to these QA systems is to retrieve from a QA knowledge base the most similar question of a given question, which can be reformulated as a paraphrase identification (PI) or a natural language inference (NLI) problem. However, most existing models for PI and NLI have at least two problems: They rely on a large amount of labeled data, which is not always available in real scenarios, and they may not be efficient for industrial applications. In this paper, we study transfer learning …

Beyond ‘Know-What’ And ‘Know-How’ To ‘Know-Who’: Enhancing Human Capital With Social Capital In An Australian Start-Up Accelerator, Pi-Shen Seet, Janice T. Jones, Lloyd Oppelaar, Graciela Corral De Zubielqui

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study investigates the enhancement of human capital with social capital in a start-up accelerator and how this integration affects the entrepreneurial learning experience. In particular, it examines the relative importance of the three components ‘know-what’, ‘know-how’ and ‘know-who’. The study involved thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with participants in an Australian start-up accelerator that is delivered using ideas such as Design Thinking, the Business Model Canvas and Lean Start-up methodology. We find that although the programme emphasised ‘know-what’ and ‘know-how’, ‘know-who’ was most significant for participant learning. The results indicate that mentors and experts were especially helpful in shaping …

Philanthropy And Immigration Enforcement: The Role Of Grantmaking On Nonprofit Influence During Secure Communities, Apolonia Calderon

Latino Public Policy

Uniquely positioned in our American democracy, foundations hold private resources they leveraged to promote their private values within our public arena. The independence of foundations, primarily private and family foundations, allows them to exert influence over public policy down to the local delivery of public good and services. An understudied policy area pertains to understanding how philanthropic funding impacts immigration policy and local enforcement. This report focuses on studying how philanthropic funding for immigration services is associated with reducing the identification of deportable immigrants, during Secure Communities. As foundations leverage their private resources to help fund nonprofits that promote their …

Effects Of Channel Structure On The Quality Competition Of Exclusively Distributed Products, Yeong Seon Kang Jan 2018

Effects Of Channel Structure On The Quality Competition Of Exclusively Distributed Products, Yeong Seon Kang

Asia Marketing Journal

This study investigates the effects of the distribution channel structure on quality decisions under duopoly competition. I considers a set-up in which two retailers compete on product quality and retail price. In the set-up, the integrated retailer has the power to determine the quality of its exclusive product, while the decentralized retailer does not. For the decentralized retailer, the supplier determines product quality. I find that asymmetric pairs of a decentralized channel by one retailer and an integrated channel by the other retailer can be a Nash equilibrium in a simultaneous-channel- choice model. The two retailers select different levels of …

The Impact Of Crisis Responsibility And Risk Perception On Communication Behavior Intention In Sns, Eun Mi Lee Jan 2018

The Impact Of Crisis Responsibility And Risk Perception On Communication Behavior Intention In Sns, Eun Mi Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

Social networking service(SNS) helps users manage, share and delivery a vast information as a communication tool. When users read crisis news in SNS, they communicate the information with others by considering not only their belief (i.e., cognitive risk perception) but also emotion (i.e., affective risk perception). However, few researches have been interested in the construct of communication behaviors of crisis in SNS.
This study aimed to explore the role of risk perception (cognitive and affective risk perception) between crisis responsibility and communication behavior through dual processing theory. As a result of the empirical analysis, crisis responsibility had a positive effect …

Examining Decision-Making Of Participating In Open Innovation Platform, Insoo Son, Jong-Ho Lee, Dongwon Lee Jan 2018

Examining Decision-Making Of Participating In Open Innovation Platform, Insoo Son, Jong-Ho Lee, Dongwon Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

Open innovation is based on a different knowledge landscape, with a different logic about the sources and uses of technologies. It implies that firms increasingly rely on external sources of innovation by emphasizing these ideas and resources. Using datasets from the UK biotechnology industry, this paper explores firms’ willingness to participate in open innovation. The results indicate that the switching cost is identified as the direct predictor of the willingness to participate in open innovation. While high commitment based on the trust with partner increases switching costs, IT infrastructure within the firm decreases switching costs to open innovation. Taken together, …
