Although one of the primary objectives of microfinance has been the reduction of poverty through the provision of credit for income-generating purposes, evidence of its impact on poverty has been mixed. Even if there is no direct impact of microfinance, there may be an indirect positive impact through the effect of microcredit availability on families’ decisions to invest in their children’s education. In this paper, I describe a study undertaken to gauge the impact of microcredit availability on education expenditures for children of clients of a South Indian microfinance institution. The respondents to questions about consumer behavior towards general merchandise and grocery retailers revealed distinct divisions among the three large retailers.

Compensation theory holds that executive aggression is related to both the level and riskiness of “inside debt” - promises from firms to pay their executives fixed sums of cash in the future, including pensions and deferred compensation. However, previous researchers have only examined the level of inside debt. We provide an inside debt metric that is conceptually superior to previously used metrics, as it incorporates the riskiness of inside debt. For the entire sample, our metric offers modest improvement in fit over past metrics, where the dependent variable is future equity return volatility. Using U.S. equity mutual fund data, we show that portfolio pumping – an illegal trading activity that artificially inflates year-end and quarter-end portfolio returns – is more pronounced among single-managed than team-managed funds. The magnitude of return inflation by team-managed funds is 45% lower compared to single-managed funds at year-ends. In addition, portfolio pumping decreases as team size increases. These results are mainly driven by peer effects among teams and, in some cases, amplified by less convex flows – performance relation in team managed funds. Do Underwriters Price-Up Ipos To Prevent Withdrawal?, Walid Y. Busaba, Zheng Liu, Felipe Restrepo

We examine whether underwriters price-up weakly-demanded IPOs to prevent withdrawal. Our empirical strategy exploits a discontinuity in the distribution of IPO prices around the low boundary of the filing range. Offerings with a high ex-ante withdrawal probability that are priced exactly at this boundary are likely priced-up to meet issuers’ reservation prices. We compare these offerings’ aftermarket returns to the returns of similarly weakly-demanded offerings whose reservation prices were likely not binding, and identify a negative 8.4-percentage point differential effect attributable to the aggressive pricing inherent in setting the offer price at the low boundary when withdrawal risk is high.

Hearing Through Walls by Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) candidate Bradley Marshall will be on display from February 19th through March 2nd, 2018 at the Tipton Gallery in downtown Johnson City. The closing reception will be held on Friday, March 2nd, from 6-9p.m.    The exhibition will consist of large archival inkjet photographs and one video installation piece. The work presented by Marshall are the result of a three year study on domesticity, lost youth, and American masculinity.
