How To Help Non-Profit Hospitals Serve Better, Lee Wynja Apr 2018

How To Help Non-Profit Hospitals Serve Better, Lee Wynja

Celebration of Research

Whether to grant lucrative hospitals tax-exempt status is a controversial legal topic. Under the current law, non-profits must provide community benefit, a specific type of charitable giving, to maintain their tax-exempt status. The goal of this paper is to argue that hospitals’ community benefit requirement should be strengthened and further specified. I plan to show that the non-profit hospitals can afford charitable contributions to surrounding communities, but such contributions are a small share of their expenditures. I propose two easy steps can be made to make the community benefit requirement meaningful. First, the Community Needs Assessment should be done every …

1978 - Water Resources Investigations - Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Digital Flow Models Of The Salinas Valley Ground-Water Basin, Report 78-113

Miscellaneous Federal Documents & Reports

This 1978 report discussed a group of hydrologic models that were developed for the Salinas Valley that included the small-stream model, river model, two -dimensional ground-water model, and three dimensional ground-water model. The small-stream model simulated ground-water recharge from small streams that were tributary to the Salinas River. The river model simulated ground-water recharge from and surface-water discharge in the Salinas River. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional ground-water models simulated hydraulic head in the ground-water basin. The report noted that in addition to being an important agricultural area, Salinas Valley contained several growing urban areas that obtained water from the ground …

State and Federal Documents Relating to Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties

This 1988 investigation was done by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Monterey County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The purposes of this study were to identify and quantify the various types of flow into and out of the ground-water basin and to describe the physical processes that control them. The hydrologic analysis included development of a two-dimensional digital flow model. One of the goals of the study was to update and improve a previous digital model of the basin. The report noted that because of the proximity of Salinas Valley to the ocean, large rates of …

On Central Branch/Reinsurance Risk Networks: Exact Results And Heuristics, Florin Avram, Sooie-Hoe Loke Apr 2018

On Central Branch/Reinsurance Risk Networks: Exact Results And Heuristics, Florin Avram, Sooie-Hoe Loke

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Modeling the interactions between a reinsurer and several insurers, or between a central management branch (CB) and several subsidiary business branches, or between a coalition and its members, are fascinating problems, which suggest many interesting questions. Beyond two dimensions, one cannot expect exact answers. Occasionally, reductions to one dimension or heuristic simplifications yield explicit approximations, which may be useful for getting qualitative insights. In this paper, we study two such problems: the ruin problem for a two-dimensional CB network under a new mathematical model, and the problem of valuation of two-dimensional CB networks by optimal dividends. A common thread between …

Locating Sociological Concepts In Business Games, Dylan Kissane, Helen Roux-Fontaine Apr 2018

Locating Sociological Concepts In Business Games, Dylan Kissane, Helen Roux-Fontaine

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This article describes one strategy for demonstrating the value of sociological concepts to business students by adopting a transversal approach to a business game at a French-American business school. This strategy proved effective in allowing a social science professor to demonstrate the practical implications of two concepts – gender and race – to undergraduate students while simultaneously allowing an international management professor to demonstrate how cross-cultural teams should be managed in order to work effectively. This article firstly explains the Ecotonas business game; secondly, it explains the crucial debriefing process for the business game and demonstrates how sociological concepts can …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Leadership Style And Lean Expressed Through Respect, Proactivity, And Innovative Work Behavior, Reiner Martens

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

This dissertation is based on the idea that a leadership style is necessary to implement a lean culture within an organization. This research study employed a systematic literature review, from which a lean leadership model was developed. Based on the two principles of a lean organizational culture, 1. respect for people and 2. continuous improvement, three measurable variables were identified, respect, proactivity, and innovative work behavior. These three variables were connected to the lean leadership model. Leadership styles based on the full range model of leadership were used as independent variable(s). The overarching results of this study were: (1) transformational …

Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip Morgan Apr 2018

Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip Morgan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Modern corporations utilize mergers and acquisitions as strategies to develop shareholder value today more than ever before, yet the need for understanding firms’ rationale and strategy is critical in predicting post-merger stock performance for all investors. I apply the interpretive power of textual analysis and regression to a corpus of SEC mergers and acquisitions public company filings between 1994-2017. Not only do I challenge the statistically significant correlation between word content and post-transaction abnormal stock returns, but I also characterize the effects of time segments, transaction size, and industry variation across time. As a final application, I consider sentiment analysis …

Marketing Process At The Nebraska Repertory Theatre, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Promote Avenue Q, Bridget Fleischer

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

When producing a stage show, whether on Broadway or the local playhouse, every decision must be made with marketing in mind. Arranging television spots, designing flyers, analyzing market research; promotion is only one area of marketing considerations. Theater is a business. Artistic merit is important to consider, but no show will be made without a customer value proposition in mind. Because of this, it is especially fortunate to be able to market a wide-appeal musical that holds artistic merit. This creative project outlines the inner workings of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, including the production, casting, and promotion that went into …
