Exploring The History And Trends Of Accounting In Canada And The United States, Annie Songeun Lee May 2018

Exploring The History And Trends Of Accounting In Canada And The United States, Annie Songeun Lee

Accounting

During my years at University at Albany, I have studied accounting that is based on the United States regulation, GAAP. As I am from British Columbia, Canada, that uses a different standard, IFRS, I wanted to take this opportunity to research the differences between GAAP and IFRS. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the history of accounting in both countries and compare their differences in education, license requirements, fraud scandals, and their solutions. I will also examine the new revenue recognition, the convergence of IFRS and GAAP, and some of the professionals’ opinions on the trend of …

The retail industry is in the process of undergoing major change. Historically big box brick and mortar strategies have dominated, but this is changing in the age of impatience and instant gratification. As consumers want items more conveniently, online retail has taken hold with no semblance of anticipated decline. At the forefront of this transformation are two industry giants: Walmart and Amazon. Walmart finds itself on the side of brick and mortar with 11,718 physical retail locations worldwide. Amazon is dominating the online retail space with control of a staggering 44% of all US e-commerce sales in 2017. These equally …

Insider Trading And The Stock Act Amendment, Josh Wilson May 2018

Insider Trading And The Stock Act Amendment, Josh Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

On April 2, 2012, Congress passed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act. The purpose of this legislation was to enhance transparency among the financial investments of Congress members, congressional staffers, and other government employees. One year later, an amendment was passed which no longer required staffers or government employees to publish their holdings online citing “national security”. Treating this event as a natural experiment, I examine whether insider trading occurred in the days leading up to and through the signing of the law by President Obama. In general, I find that portfolios of the 50 most commonly held …

Shareholder Coordination And Stock Price Informativeness, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Bin Wang May 2018

Shareholder Coordination And Stock Price Informativeness, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Bin Wang

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We show that firm‐specific information is more likely to be incorporated into stock prices when firms have stronger shareholder coordination. The premise of our work is that geographic proximity reduces communication costs among shareholders, thereby leading to better coordination. The positive coordination‐informativeness relation is driven mainly by shareholder coordination among dedicated and independent institutions. We further show that the positive effect is more pronounced for firms with weaker governance mechanisms, suggesting that shareholder coordination could serve as a substitute conduit of price discovery. Lastly, we propose that shareholder coordination improves stock price informativeness through the channel of enhanced voluntary disclosure …

Understanding Characteristics Of High Performers In Two-Sided Competitive Crowdsourcing, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi

Information Systems Faculty Publications

This study seeks to understand how professionals’ (creative) Adaption-Innovation behaviors and prior knowledge influence successful participation in two-sided competitive crowdsourcing. Using Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation Theory, the study examines the influence of creatives’ diversity, skills, experience, and activity level on crowdsourcing outcomes. Analysis of cross-sectional data of participants on a popular competitive crowdsourcing platform show that, while diversity and skills do not necessarily lead to higher performance, activity level and experience contribute to creatives’ higher performance. Contribution to literature is by extending Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation Theory objectively as a lens to understand creative participation in crowdsourcing, highlighting key features of crowdsourcing as unbounded …

Three Essays On Expanded Relationship Marketing, Ashish Kalra May 2018

Three Essays On Expanded Relationship Marketing, Ashish Kalra

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

Customer engagement has become a recent buzzword in marketing and has emerged as a hot topic among practitioners and academics. However, there is no consensus on how to define customer engagement. This has made it difficult for researchers to advance the theory of customer engagement and researchers have been unable to offer any specific managerial insights on how to enhance such behaviors. This dissertation addresses these gaps by systematically reviewing the customer engagement literature, offering a unified framework to advance theory, and subsequently developing managerially driven insights. In the first essay, we adopt relationship marketing theory and service-dominant logic to …

Service Based Learning Of Income Taxes, Britny Andersen May 2018

Service Based Learning Of Income Taxes, Britny Andersen

Senior Honors Projects

Income tax preparation is best learned through application. Reading the tax law and codification is important, however it is crucial to apply this information to real world situations. By volunteering at the South County Rhode Island Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, I had the opportunity to take my knowledge of income tax law and apply it to income tax returns for people in the local community. While an understanding of income tax laws was important, since I was providing a service to clients, communication skills were also crucial to the entire process.

Interestingly, I was surprised to discover that effective …

Subjectivity Of Diamond Prices In Online Retail: Insights From A Data Mining Study, Stanislav Mamonov, Tamilla Triantoro May 2018

Subjectivity Of Diamond Prices In Online Retail: Insights From A Data Mining Study, Stanislav Mamonov, Tamilla Triantoro

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Diamonds belong to a unique product category whose perceived value is largely dependent on socially constructed beliefs. To explore the degree to which the physical properties of a diamond can be used to predict the diamond price, we perform data mining on a large dataset of loose diamonds scraped from an online diamond retailer. We find that diamond weight, color and clarity are the key characteristics that influence diamond prices. The data mining results also suggest a high degree of subjectivity in diamond pricing that may reflect price obfuscation strategies employed by diamond retailers.

How does the ownership of dwellings by recent graduates reflect the business cycle? This paper focuses on the relationship between the unemployment rate and the ownership of dwelling for recent graduates. Scholars have been analyzing the relationship between the ownership of dwellings and unemployment for decades. Most studies find out that home ownership seems to constrain the labor mobility and therefore, it can result in higher unemployment. However, in this paper, the focus is on recent graduates, which means there will be limited influence of labor mobility. The ownership of dwelling data is obtained from the IPUMS CPS and the …

Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton May 2018

Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project examines the communications of the alt-Right, a relatively new white supremacist social movement in the US. The popularity of the alt-Right can be attributed to not only changing social conditions leading to rising instability but also rhetorically astute uses of new media. The alt-Right has been able to define its brand as an anti-political correctness coalition, and to communicate that brand identity to the public. When the brand identity eventually fell apart, so too did the movement.ut.

Blockchain: The Backbone Of Supply Chains In Omni-Channels, Yejin Lee

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

From the financial industry to the healthcare industry, many use cases for blockchain have been explored and adopted. However, unlike most industries, the retail industry has yet to fully explore blockchain’s capabilities, for the industry’s priority is in improving its practices first. One of its practices in the works is omni-channels, which face struggles of its own, that oftentimes result from supply chain inefficiencies. This paper will utilize already explored blockchain potentials as a guide to explore and introduce new potentials in blockchain for supply chain in omni-channels.

A Comprehensive Study That Identifies The Gap In Project Management Education Concerning Fundamental Interpersonal And Cultural Skills, Stephanie Lechman May 2018

A Comprehensive Study That Identifies The Gap In Project Management Education Concerning Fundamental Interpersonal And Cultural Skills, Stephanie Lechman

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The project management field has an absence of a universally accepted set of attributes that relate to project success. The current methodology alone does not focus enough attention on developing skills to engage, adapt, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including the project team and those affected or impacted by the project. The gap in cultural and interpersonal skills I have identified in the classroom and in textbooks motivated me to complete a research project that investigates the claims that I have outlined. The purpose of this research was to create a conceptual triangle that incorporates the …

An Analysis Of Chinese Trade And Fta Using Gravity Model, Minyu Liu

Applied Economics Theses

This paper assesses the impacts of the Free Trade Agreement on the volume of both the import and export of China and FTA countries or districts. We used a gravity model with dummy variables for China and each Chinese FTA partner country to account for the specificities of particular trade relations. By using the relevant theories and methods for the trade gravity model, we estimate a pooled cross-section model with data for 33 countries or districts over 15 years. The result indicates that the GDP, per capita GDP, distance, FTA, and language are the main factors that influence the volume …

The Rearview Mirror And Windshield: Utilizing The Intersection Of Nostalgia And Neophila To Target Today's Consumers", Hannah Lucile Hungate May 2018

The Rearview Mirror And Windshield: Utilizing The Intersection Of Nostalgia And Neophila To Target Today's Consumers", Hannah Lucile Hungate

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

In a technologically-advanced, rapidly-changing business world, successful marketing practice is becoming more and more elusive to the competing corporations. Two popular tactics—nostalgia and neophilia—have been shown to both dazzle and destroy, depending upon their use. These concepts have been utilized by a variety of brands—some of the world’s largest beverage companies, the most popular application of 2016 and air fresheners, to name a few—and have resulted in heavy profits and losses for the companies.

Nostalgia and neophilia in marketing must first be analyzed as individual concepts, each with their own merits and disadvantages, and then viewed as an intersection where …

The Reality Of The Refugee Crisis In Italy: A Look Into The Lives Of Illegitimate Refugees And The Unofficial Organizations That Support Them, Cole Mcquirk

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

The words written on the United States of America’s famous Statue of Liberty, written by poet Emma Lazarus over a century ago:

Give me your tired, your poor,

your huddled masses yearning to breathe free

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. . . .

America and Europe alike have forgotten the sacred words that gave hope to so many 100 years ago. Many use phrases like “floods of people” or “swarms” to describe those who leave their countries for a life in the Western world. Which of the refugees welcomed into the most powerful country in the world were …

Nonprofit Marketing Strategy, Marisa Lizana May 2018

Nonprofit Marketing Strategy, Marisa Lizana

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Abstract

This paper explores the new and vague idea of nonprofit marketing. From studies comparing traditional marketing to nonprofit marketing and surveys analyzing the current status of organizations’ marketing plans, we see the gray area that is nonprofit marketing and the lack of research to enlighten us what a successful marketing strategy looks like. Then, I talk about my first-hand experiences working for a nonprofit, what I learned, and what questions and ideas I have regarding the future of nonprofit marketing strategy.

Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck May 2018

Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This thesis presents ways of how orchestras in Germany and the U.S can transform classical music into a vehicle for social improvement through the diversification of audiences, musicians’ body, artistic programming, concert experience, and revenues. The linkages between mission and funding models of U.S orchestras are being re-calibrated, striving for social relevancy and financial sustainability at once. This approach is contrary to the way in which orchestras have divorced their missions for on-site concerts as their primary product from off-site community programs as a secondary avenue. The purpose and mission set forth for these orchestras, respectively, must be viewed in …

Logistics And The Olympic Games: A Project Management Case Study, Sophia Chalsma May 2018

Logistics And The Olympic Games: A Project Management Case Study, Sophia Chalsma

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Logistics and the Olympic Games explores the complex logistical nature of the Olympic Games and its implications for the future of the current Olympic hosting process. It first examines the operational planning of the Rio de Janeiro Summer 2016 Games, followed by a comparison to the Montréal 1976, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and London 2012 Games. Taking into consideration the economic and social effects that the Games have on host cities, this paper then presents some possibilities for the future of the Games and argues for the need for change.
