Best Practices In A Clinical Development Project Management Office (Pmo) To Achieve A Reference Standard In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Russell Guinto

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Medications are developed by the pharmaceutical industry starting with the discovery phase, proceeds to preclinical trials, moves into clinical trials (progressing from Phase I to Phase III), and if the data are positive, may lead to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Once approved, post-marketing surveillance for safety is required as long as the drug is marketed to consumers. This phase may also include clinical trial Phase IV studies if additional safety testing is required. This process usually takes between ten to fifteen years, with clinical development taking seven to ten years of that time (1). Clinical development can …

This experiment examined the twelve principles of SCL in the Faculty of Business Administration, Economics & Political Science (BAEPS) as a part of teaching and learning strategy and action plans. Feedback was collected from three student groups undertaking different modules at three levels within the Business Department. Each module applied SCL for the …

Misconduct And Fraud By Investment Managers, Stephen G. Dimmock, Joseph D. Farizo, William C. Gerken Aug 2018

Misconduct And Fraud By Investment Managers, Stephen G. Dimmock, Joseph D. Farizo, William C. Gerken

Finance and Quantitative Methods Research Data

We document the prevalence and variety of frauds committed by investment managers. We show that prior legal and regulatory violations, conflicts-of-interest, and monitoring disclosures available via the Security and Exchange Commission’s Form ADV are useful for predicting fraud. Additional tests show that fraud by rogue employees is more predictable than firm-wide fraud, but both types of fraud are significantly predictable. We revisit the fraud prediction model of Dimmock and Gerken (2012) and test its performance out-of-sample (using fraud cases discovered since that article’s publication). We find the model has significant predictive power for the out-of-sample cases. To encourage additional research …

Revisiting Corporate Financial Policy And The Value Of Cash, Nan Guo Aug 2018

Revisiting Corporate Financial Policy And The Value Of Cash, Nan Guo

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Corporate financial policy and the value of cash by Michael Faulkender and Rong Wang (2006) examined the cross sectional variation in the marginal value of corporate cash holdings that arises from differences in the corporate financial policy. The main findings were that the marginal value of cash declines with large cash holdings, higher leverage, and better access to capital market. The goal of this paper is to replicate and extend Faulkender & Wang's (2006) work to test whether their assumptions and results are still valid.

Boards Of Directors And Firm Leverage: Evidence From Real Estate Investment Trusts, Trang Doan, Nga Nguyen Aug 2018

Boards Of Directors And Firm Leverage: Evidence From Real Estate Investment Trusts, Trang Doan, Nga Nguyen

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We re-examine the negative association between leverage and returns while also focusing on the role of boards of directors. To do so, we utilize the unique setting of real estate investment trusts (REITs), their high leverage, and the volatility that the industry experienced during the recent financial crisis. We find that during the financial crisis REIT board activity increased, especially among firms with high leverage. We also find that board activity helps mitigate the previously reported negative effect of leverage on returns during this time period. Post-crisis, we find evidence suggesting that firms with more active boards reduce …

When Beauty Is The Beast: The Effects Of Beauty Propaganda On Female Consumers, Savannah Greenfield Aug 2018

When Beauty Is The Beast: The Effects Of Beauty Propaganda On Female Consumers, Savannah Greenfield

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Women are faced with a constant barrage of advertisements every day and the subliminal messages that come with this visual assault. These messages are influenced by years of sexism and oversexualization in the media, and shape the actions of female consumers. This investigation reviews three existing studies that demonstrate the negative effects of beauty advertisements on women. These effects are then studied through the lens of female consumer behavior to evaluate women’s motivations in continuing to buy beauty products. A link between negative effects and consumer motivations is discussed to reveal the harsh grip of sexism on the beauty and …

This article also describes how the campaign was able to build a sense of community not only among the large university library system but …

Assessing The Impacts Of Crowdsourcing In Logistics And Supply Chain Operations, Ha Hai Ta Aug 2018

Assessing The Impacts Of Crowdsourcing In Logistics And Supply Chain Operations, Ha Hai Ta

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Crowdsourcing models, whereby firms start to delegate supply chain operations activities to a mass of actors in the marketplace, have grown drastically in recent years. 85% of the top global brands have reported to use crowdsourcing in the last ten year with top names such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Nestle. These emergent business models, however, have remained unexplored in extant SCM literature. Drawing on various theoretical underpinnings, this dissertation aims to investigate and develop a holistic understanding of the importance and impacts of crowdsourcing in SCM from multiple perspectives. Three individual studies implementing a range of methodological approaches …

A Content Analysis Of Section 1983 Litigation Against Reserve Police Officers, Michael Ryan Broadus Aug 2018

A Content Analysis Of Section 1983 Litigation Against Reserve Police Officers, Michael Ryan Broadus

Master's Theses

Police studies have well developed a demonstrative framework for detailing risks which generate financially-detrimental civil litigation – particularly regarding 42 U.S.C. §1983. Conversely, though, police studies have given little attention to the often-used but differentially-trained reserve police officer. Primarily replicating the methodologies of Kappeler, Kappeler, and del Carmen (1993) and Ross (2000), this descriptive study sought to fill this void via a manifest content approach to purposively select a sample of Section 1983 cases decided by U.S. District Courts over a 16-year period (2001-2016) to determine: (1) if significant liability was generated by reserve officers, (2) the main basis for …

Relationship Banking And Loan Syndicate Structure: The Role Of Private Equity Sponsors, Rongbing Huang, Donghang Zhang, Yija (Eddie) Zhao Aug 2018

Relationship Banking And Loan Syndicate Structure: The Role Of Private Equity Sponsors, Rongbing Huang, Donghang Zhang, Yija (Eddie) Zhao

Faculty Articles

Using a sample of syndicated loans to private equity (PE)-backed IPO companies, we examine how a third-party bank relationship influences the syndicate structure of a loan. We find that a stronger relationship between the lead bank and the borrower’s PE firm enables the lead bank to retain a smaller share of the loan and form a larger and less concentrated syndicate, especially when the borrower is less transparent. A stronger PE-bank relationship also attracts greater foreign bank participation. Our findings suggest that the lead bank’s relationship with a large equity holder of the borrower facilitates information production in lending.

A Return To The Cash Conversion Cycle And Corporate Returns, Madyson Mcpherson Aug 2018

A Return To The Cash Conversion Cycle And Corporate Returns, Madyson Mcpherson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A little over twenty years ago, Jose, Lancaster, and Stevens (1996) wrote a paper examining the relationship between profitability and ongoing liquidity management for firms over a twenty-year period, from 1974 to 1993. They test the relationship between the cash conversion cycle, ongoing liquidity management, and other methods of profitability using a regression analysis (Jose, Lancaster, and Stevens, 1996). This paper aims to do the same but with a selection of firms over a different twenty-year period, from 1993 to 2013. We implement Jose et al.’s methodology with updated data to see if contemporary data yields similar results: aggressive working …

Public Hedge Funds, Lin Sun, Melvyn Teo Aug 2018

Public Hedge Funds, Lin Sun, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Hedge funds managed by listed firms significantly under-perform funds managed by unlisted firms. The under-performance is more severe for funds with low manager deltas, poor governance, and no manager co-investment, or managed by firms whose prices are sensitive to earnings news. Notwithstanding the under-performance, listed asset management firms raise more capital, by growing existing funds and launching new funds post listing, and harvest greater fee revenues than do comparable unlisted firms. The results are consistent with the view that, for asset management firms, going public weakens the alignment between ownership, control, and investment capital, thereby engendering conflicts of interest.

Implications Of Audit Office Resource Allocation Shocks: Evidence From Late 10-K Filings, Stuart Dearden Aug 2018

Implications Of Audit Office Resource Allocation Shocks: Evidence From Late 10-K Filings, Stuart Dearden

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prior literature examines consequences (e.g., negative market reactions, higher subsequent audit fees, and debt covenant violations) audit clients face arising from missed regulatory due dates. These clients likely pressure the auditor to provide additional resources to perform the audit. This paper examines whether an audit office resource allocation shock stemming from late-filing clients is associated with the audit quality of the other timely-filing clients in that audit office. I find that timely-filing clients are more likely to subsequently restate their financial statements when there are late-filing clients in the same audit office. Using audit fees as a proxy for auditor …

The Influence Of Nonpublic Audit Concentration On Public Client Audit Outcomes, Emily Hunt Aug 2018

The Influence Of Nonpublic Audit Concentration On Public Client Audit Outcomes, Emily Hunt

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nonpublic clients make up a substantial portion of audit firm client portfolios and the demands they place on the audit firm differ from those of public clients. As such, I investigate the influence of nonpublic audit concentration (NPAC) on the quality, timeliness, and cost effectiveness of public client audits. I find that NPAC is unrelated to audit quality and negatively related to the likelihood of late filing financial statements and audit fees for public clients. My study contributes to audit literature that investigates the effect of audit firm portfolio characteristics on audit outcomes by 1) providing a new measure that …

The Influence Of High-Performance Work Systems And Intangible Strategic Resources On The Entrepreneurial Orientation-Firm Performance Relationship., Shankar Naskar Aug 2018

The Influence Of High-Performance Work Systems And Intangible Strategic Resources On The Entrepreneurial Orientation-Firm Performance Relationship., Shankar Naskar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The entrepreneurship literature indicates that entrepreneurially oriented firms perform better and grow faster than firms that are conservatively oriented. Firms with an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) jointly exhibit risk-taking, innovative and proactive behaviors. The EO-firm performance relationship is a well-established one. However, scholars have bemoaned the lack of focus on internal organizational factors that may influence or affect the nature of the relationship. My dissertation uses the framework of the resource-based theory of the firm to argue that the influence of EO on performance is contingent on the resources and the internal organizing context (organizing capability) of a firm. The resource-based …

An Examination Of Box Office Relationship Quality And Relationship Selling In Division I College Athletics., James F. Weiner Aug 2018

An Examination Of Box Office Relationship Quality And Relationship Selling In Division I College Athletics., James F. Weiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College athletics departments have experienced unprecedented growth. However, expenses have risen even faster (Fulks, 2016), and university athletics departments have relied on increased subsidies from host institutions and donations to make ends meet (Fulks, 2016). The root cause behind much of the revenue increases have been credited to large multimedia and broadcast contracts, which guarantee substantial income for decade-long terms (Sherman, 2016). Such agreements leave little room for individual growth, leaving ticket sales as one of the few controllable revenues to which a school could manipulate their own bottom line and increase profitability. Further investigation into box office sales trends …

An Examination Of The Linkages Between Climate, Engagement, And Wellbeing In Higher Education., Ebo Kobena Atomo Osam Aug 2018

An Examination Of The Linkages Between Climate, Engagement, And Wellbeing In Higher Education., Ebo Kobena Atomo Osam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research coalescing around psychological climate, engagement, and wellbeing has been receiving considerable attention in management and HRD literature recently. However, research associated with these variables has generally been limited to for-profit businesses and organizations with little of note done using higher educational institutions. Thus, this cross sectional research study examined the extent to which psychological climate, engagement, and wellbeing are associated with each other in higher educational institutions. The study begins with an overview of how these variables have been identified as being connected with each other in research and practice, as well as discusses context specific factors in higher …

Buying Behaviors Of Generation X Women On Fast Fashion Products: A Mixed Methods Study, Yiyue Fan Aug 2018

Buying Behaviors Of Generation X Women On Fast Fashion Products: A Mixed Methods Study, Yiyue Fan

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fast fashion has changed the world’s fashion industry and consumer behavior extensively. Not only has the fast fashion provided “hot” products that capture the latest fashion trends from the catwalk, but has also allowed consumers purchase products with affordable prices (Su et al., 2016). Generation X is an important age group to study since it “bridged pre-digital and digital cultures, liberal and neo-conservative political swings, material abundance and economic hardship, social engagement” and has an important role in bridging baby boomers and the Millennials (Katz, 2017). A lot of literature is available about Millennials consumer buying behavior, but very little …

The Informational Role Of Overconfident Ceos, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang Aug 2018

The Informational Role Of Overconfident Ceos, Chi Shen Wei, Lei Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study how overconfident CEOs communicate with the market and whether this has implications on the firm’s information environment. Textual analysis reveals that overconfident CEOs communicate using less negative tone in their 10K/Q filings. Our evidence suggests that overconfident CEOs provide market participants with more value-relevant information as sell-side analysts make more accurate forecasts of their firm’s future earnings. Consistent with a reduction in asymmetric information, implied cost of equity capital is lower. However, not all investors benefit as the information advantage of short sellers disappears in the stocks of overconfident CEOs.
