Ethical Leadership: Not Everyone Responds Equally, W. Randy Evans, Richard S. Allen, Russell W. Clayton Oct 2016

Ethical Leadership: Not Everyone Responds Equally, W. Randy Evans, Richard S. Allen, Russell W. Clayton

Organization Management Journal

Theoretical frameworks associated with ethical leadership have not fully considered the nature of the leader–follower exchange, and, in addition, few studies have considered the impact of follower individual differences in reactions to ethical leadership. Our research extends the customary social exchange perspective of transactional and relational resources by accounting for the ideological resources (i.e., value-oriented principles) that can also imbue the leader–subordinate relationship. Second, differences in equity sensitivity are hypothesized to moderate the influence of ethical leadership on employee attachment to the organization. We predicted that the impact of ethical leadership on organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and organizational identification is …

What Is Professionalism? The Validation Of A Comprehensive Model Of Professionalism, Andrew W. Rowland Oct 2016

What Is Professionalism? The Validation Of A Comprehensive Model Of Professionalism, Andrew W. Rowland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Professionalism is a term frequently used in organizations yet perceptions of what it means differ from person to person. Given its frequent use and its link to various job outcomes, such as organizational commitment (Bartol, 1979), there is a need to have a universal definition of professionalism. While there are existing models of professionalism these models are typically developed for a specific field or industry. Thus, there is also a need for a comprehensive model of professionalism that can be used across multiple fields and industries. This study worked to develop a model of professionalism that creates a comprehensive model …

Delay is a primary factor that can have an effect on project duration, scheduled delivery date, as well as the overhead cost of the project. This study investigated the problem of delays in construction projects. The research focused on the combination of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Last Planner System (LPS) together to measure the execution time of construction projects. The aim of this study was to determine whether using BIM and …

Acquisitions And Regulatory Arbitrage By Captive Finance Companies, Deborah Smith, Mina Glambosky, Kimberly Gleason, K. Bryan Menk Oct 2016

Acquisitions And Regulatory Arbitrage By Captive Finance Companies, Deborah Smith, Mina Glambosky, Kimberly Gleason, K. Bryan Menk

Business Faculty Publications

Captive finance firms play an important role as financial intermediaries. Yet, they receive little attention in financial research. Recently, finance companies have grown by engaging in acquisition activities. Given their unique characteristics, finance companies may be more capable of extracting gains from acquisitions than other firms. We explain their advantages, and assess the market response and long-term valuation of finance companies that engage in acquisitions. Our results indicate that acquisitions by captive finance firms are wealth enhancing in the short term and the long term. However, the market reacts negatively when flexible captive financing firms acquire highly regulated depository institutions.

The Evolution Of Gift Cards In Secondary Markets And Money Services, Scott Denning, Ralph E. Mckinney Jr. Oct 2016

The Evolution Of Gift Cards In Secondary Markets And Money Services, Scott Denning, Ralph E. Mckinney Jr.

Management Information Systems Faculty Research

This paper reviews gift cards and the regulations associated with these instruments in financial transactions. One important consideration of gift cards involves secondary markets and money services business. While the accounting of gift cards by retailers is easy when they are redeemed, gift cards become problematic when breakage (non-redemption) occurs. In addition to large organized exchanges for gift cards, many prospective sellers and buyers have turned to non-mainstream dealers to handle situations relating to the non-redemption of the gift card. This has caused gift cards to become an increasingly important player in the secondary market. Another important observation with these …

An Empirical Assessment Of Empirical Corporate Finance, Jeffrey L. Coles, Zhichuan Frank Li Oct 2016

An Empirical Assessment Of Empirical Corporate Finance, Jeffrey L. Coles, Zhichuan Frank Li

Business Publications

We empirically evaluate 20 prominent contributions to a broad range of areas in the empirical corporate finance literature. We assemble the necessary data and then apply a single, simple econometric method, the connected-groups approach of Abowd, Karmarz, and Margolis (1999), to appraise the extent to which prevailing empirical specifications explain variation of the dependent variable, differ in composition of fit arising from various classes of independent variables, and exhibit resistance to omitted variable bias and other endogeneity problems. In particular, we identify and estimate the role of observed and unobserved firm- and manager-specific characteristics in determining primary features of corporate …

How Do Firms Adapt? A Fuzzy-Set Analysis Of The Role Of Cognition And Capabilities In U.S. Defense Firms’ Responses To 9/11, Jean-Philippe Vergne, Colette Depeyre Oct 2016

How Do Firms Adapt? A Fuzzy-Set Analysis Of The Role Of Cognition And Capabilities In U.S. Defense Firms’ Responses To 9/11, Jean-Philippe Vergne, Colette Depeyre

Business Publications

How do firms adapt? In recent years, this old question has attracted new answers—albeit partial ones. On the one hand, cognition researchers have emphasized managerial attention to environmental change as a key driver of adaptation. On the other hand, dynamic capabilities scholars have underscored the role of asset reconfigurations implemented amid shifting environments. However, the explanatory powers of the two perspectives have not yet been assessed comparatively. This mixed methods study uses fuzzy-set analyses of defense firms’ responses to 9/11 to model the two perspectives as potentially competing or complementary, while our findings suggest that neither dynamic capabilities nor superior …

Managing The Tensions At The Intersection Of The Triple Bottom Line: A Paradox Theory Approach To Sustainability Management, Lucie K. Ozanne, Marcus Phipps, Todd Weaver, Michal Carrington, Michael Luchs, Jesse Callin, Shipra Gupta, Nicholas J. C. Santos, Kristin Scott, Jerome Williams

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Corporate sustainability management encompasses multiple dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. Companies are increasingly evaluated within the public sphere, and within their own organizations, according to the degree to which they are perceived to simultaneously promote this nexus of virtues. This article seeks to explore the tensions frequently faced by organizations that strive to manage these dimensions and the role of public policy in that pursuit. A multiple–case study approach is utilized in which the authors selected case organizations according to whether they were attempting to manage the three dimensions of sustainability. The authors utilize paradox theory and a typology provided …

Evaluating Indicators Of Job Performance: Distributions And Types Of Analyses, Richard J. Chambers Ii Oct 2016

Evaluating Indicators Of Job Performance: Distributions And Types Of Analyses, Richard J. Chambers Ii

Doctoral Dissertations

Distributions of job performance indicators have historically been assumed to be normally distributed (Aguinis & O'Boyle, 2014; Schmidt & Hunter, 1983; Tiffin, 1947). Generally, any evidence to the contrary has been attributed to errors in the measurement of job performance (Murphy, 2008). A few researchers have been skeptical of this assumption (Micceri, 1989; Murphy, 1999; Saal, Downey, & Lahey, 1980); yet, only recently has research demonstrated that in certain specific situations job performance is exponentially distributed (Aguinis, O'Boyle, Gonzalez-Mulé, & Joo, 2016; O'Boyle & Aguinis, 2012). To date there have been few recommendations in the Industrial-Organizational Psychology literature about how …

Research Insights About Risk Governance: Implications From A Review Of Erm Research, Therese R. Viscelli, Mark S. Beasley, Dana R. Hermanson Oct 2016

Research Insights About Risk Governance: Implications From A Review Of Erm Research, Therese R. Viscelli, Mark S. Beasley, Dana R. Hermanson

Faculty Articles

In recent years, expectations for increased risk governance have been placed explicitly on boards of directors. In response, boards are being held responsible for not only understanding and approving management’s risk management processes, but they are also being held responsible for assessing the risks identified by those processes as part of overseeing management’s pursuit of value. These increasing responsibilities have led a number of organizations to adopt enterprise risk management (ERM) as a holistic approach to risk management that extends beyond traditional silo-based risk management techniques. As boards, often through their audit committee, consider management’s implementation of ERM as part …

A Tried-And-True Method For Encouraging Innovation, Dow Scott Oct 2016

A Tried-And-True Method For Encouraging Innovation, Dow Scott

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

CEOs recognize that continuous innovation is absolutely essential for company survival (e.g., Craren 2010; Mitchell, Ray, and van Ark 2015; Pawlenty 2014). McMullen and Lash (2014) found that the “best companies for leadership” are more likely to reward innovation and collaboration than are other companies. Thus, the trend toward expanding the responsibility for innovation beyond the research and development (R&D) department to employees throughout the organization is not surprising (Baumann and Stieglitz 2013). There are two distinct forms of innovation. The first focuses on developing products and services that allow companies to charge a premium for their products and services …

Marketing As A Means To Transformative Social Conflict Resolution: Lessons From Transitioning War Economies And The Colombian Coffee Marketing System, Andres Barrios, Kristine De Valck, Clifford J. Shultz, Olivier Sibai, Katharina C. Husemann, Matthew Maxwell-Smith, Marius K. Luedicke Oct 2016

Marketing As A Means To Transformative Social Conflict Resolution: Lessons From Transitioning War Economies And The Colombian Coffee Marketing System, Andres Barrios, Kristine De Valck, Clifford J. Shultz, Olivier Sibai, Katharina C. Husemann, Matthew Maxwell-Smith, Marius K. Luedicke

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Social conflicts are ubiquitous to the human condition and occur throughout markets, marketing processes, and marketing systems. When unchecked or unmitigated, social conflict can have devastating consequences for consumers, marketers, and societies, especially when conflict escalates to war. In this article, the authors offer a systemic analysis of the Colombian wareconomy, with its conflicted shadow and coping markets, to show how a growing network of fair-trade coffee actors has played a key role in transitioning the country’s war economy into a peace economy. They particularly draw attention to the sources of conflict in this market and highlight four transition mechanisms—empowerment, …

Impediments In The Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Space: A Mixed-Method Approach, Tony Kealy Oct 2016

Impediments In The Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Space: A Mixed-Method Approach, Tony Kealy

Articles

Despite the potentially positive image and reputation implications of businesses implementing strategies in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), there appears to be a dearth of companies willing to play a leading role in moving CSR activities to upper levels within the consciousness of the organisation. The vast majority of businesses are merely complying with national regulations in their business sustainability efforts. This study investigates the reasons why there are road-blocks in the pursuit of higher levels of sustainable business development. A 17-question on-line survey was administered to a number of global participant businesses in a range of industries. The resulting qualitative …
