Designing And Evaluating Business Process Models: An Experimental Approach, Yuecheng Martin Yu, Alexander Pelaez, Karl R. Lang Nov 2016

Designing And Evaluating Business Process Models: An Experimental Approach, Yuecheng Martin Yu, Alexander Pelaez, Karl R. Lang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents an experimental approach to compare the performance of alternative business process designs. We use an example case of an electronic group buying setting to demonstrate how our approach can be applied in practice. More specifically, we chose a standard business process, the sales process as implemented on a group buying platform, to illustrate how a business process may be redesigned in order to better meet the needs of customers. For that purpose, we introduce a social technology feature to support cooperation among buyers in the sales process and then analyze the performance impact of the proposed business …

Aspect-Based Helpfulness Prediction For Online Product Reviews, Yinfei Yang, Cen Chen, Forrest Sheng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product reviews greatly influence purchase decisions in online shopping. A common burden of online shopping is that consumers have to search for the right answers through massive reviews, especially on popular products. Hence, estimating and predicting the helpfulness of reviews become important tasks to directly improve shopping experience. In this paper, we propose a new approach to helpfulness prediction by leveraging aspect analysis of reviews. Our hypothesis is that a helpful review will cover many aspects of a product at different emphasis levels. The first step to tackle this problem is to extract proper aspects. Because related products share common …

The Force Behind The Force: Case Profiles Of Successful Military Spouses Balancing Employment, Service, And Family, Deborah A. Bradbard, Rosalinda V. Maury, Nicholas Armstrong

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

The second brief of this series highlights eight successful military spouses currently employed in the corporate workforce. Through the detailed conversations, the reader begins to understand the employment challenges military spouses face (i.e., deployments along with frequent relocation), how these challenges impact their work histories and resumes, and how standard methods of finding and getting a job (through a traditional resume or standard screening process) eliminate many military spouses even before they have had the opportunity to compete. The paper also offers suggestions and simple strategies employers can (1) assess military spouse candidates and (2) help military spouses through training …

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of spending a day with Dick Motta, a great Aggie who spent a lifetime teaching young men about basketball and life. Motta won at every level of coaching, leading Grace High School to the Idaho state championship, Weber State College to three conference championships, and the NBA Washington Bullets to their only championship, in 1978. He was known as a players’ coach, and his players, including former Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan, were fiercely loyal to him. This from a man who never actually played the game beyond high school.

Patent #9391962, “Multi-node Encryption”, is an idea that could potentially upset the entire internet industry. Describing the genesis of his idea, Huntsman Associate Professor Jeff Johnson offered the following analogy, “In the cyber world we have bad guys who are constantly trying to hurt us. Our defense against these bad guys is to build great stone walls that act as a shield. Unfortunately, over time the bad guys obtain machines that can crush stone. Surprisingly, our solution is to simply use more stones in the wall.” So, why then are we building our defenses out of the very source of …

When Breanne Yamauchi, Business Administration and Marketing, ’18, tore her ACL just a few months before coming to Utah State University, she was crushed. This was a pattern that she would see over and over again – when one door closed, another one always opened.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to visit businesses and learn about culture in Vietnam, Thailand, and China with the Global Learning Experiences Program at the Huntsman School of Business. This experience has been the highlight of my college experience. This amazing experience provided me with an opportunity to expand and strengthen my own perspective, and helped me one to understand and better analyze global business issues in a broader perspective. Moreover, the cultural experience helped me, as a student, and a future worker, to think objectively about myself, tolerate differences, and recognize and appreciate diversity.

The idea for HealthEquity, one of the nation’s largest health savings custodians, was germinated in a class at USU during Steve Neeleman’s sophomore year. “I took this class, medical sociology, taught by Reed Geertsen, and it really opened my eyes to the cost of healthcare and our system of health insurance,” recounted Neeleman. After graduating from Utah State, where he also played football, he went on to the University of Utah Medical School. Felling and skidding operations were monitored while clearcut harvesting a 12-acre area of a 14-year old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantation. The study area contained 465 trees per acre for trees 2.0 inches Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) and larger with a Quadratic Mean Diameter (QMD) of 7.26 inches. Two feller-bunchers (tracked and rubber-tired) and two skidders (conventional and large capacity) were paired to create four different harvesting systems which were randomly assigned to 3-acre units for evaluation of production rates and costs. Each system was balanced to determine the number of machines needed to minimize the …
