Minimum Wages And Appropriation Of Quasi-Rents, Ryan Murphy
Minimum Wages And Appropriation Of Quasi-Rents, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
This note argues that the appropriation of the quasi-rents from firms to labor is a more persuasive interpretation of the effects of minimum wages than is generally recognized.
Are Strong States Key To Reducing Violence? A Test Of Pinker, Ryan Murphy
Are Strong States Key To Reducing Violence? A Test Of Pinker, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
STEVEN PINKER CLAIMS in The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011) that nearly all social-scientific evidence tells us violence is declining. This paper makes no claims against Pinker’s main argument; criticisms of it having been addressed elsewhere (Pinker 2015). However, one secondary hypothesis Pinker puts forward is that the development of strong states was a key factor in the decline of violence (2011, 42). Summarizing his reading of the evidence, Pinker writes, “[t]he reduction of homicide by government control is so obvious to anthropologists that they seldom document it with numbers… It goes without saying that people that have been …
Beggaring Thy Neighbor At The State And Local Level, Ryan Murphy
Beggaring Thy Neighbor At The State And Local Level, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
Purpose – This paper aims to address a growing empirical literature which measures the size of the fiscal multiplier at the state and local levels. This literature generally fails to consider the reaction function of the central bank, which typically should be expected to offset local increases in spending by reducing it elsewhere in the currency area. This is true under rather orthodox assumptions, such as an inflation targeting central bank meeting its target.
Design/methodology/approach – The author reviews prominent examples of the literature and establishes the extent to which the empirical methodology avoids the issue he raises. Subsequently, the …
A Short Empirical Note On State Misery Indexes, Ryan Murphy
A Short Empirical Note On State Misery Indexes, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
This paper constructs state level Misery Indexes, incorporating recent data on Regional Pricing Parities. As an application, it draws the Phillips curve derived from a panel of fifty states plus the District of Columbia in the years 2008-2011. A state level Misery Index will allow economists and the public to evaluate the overall macroeconomic picture of a regional economy, just as the Misery Index currently allows in the national and international context.
The Final Nail In The Cross Of Gold, Ryan Murphy, Eric Li
The Final Nail In The Cross Of Gold, Ryan Murphy, Eric Li
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
There is little, if any, academic support for viewing gold as an effective primary investment strategy. Yet the idea persists in the public and has seen a revival in the years following the Great Recession. We perform a novel epirical comparison of gold with the S&P 500 from 1975 to 2016 in demonstrating how poor of a choice it is as a general strategy. A particularly striing finding is that gold outperforms S&P 500 (27% of the time) approximately as often as holding cash outperforms gold (28% of the time).
Intergovernmental Organisations And Economic Freedom: Wise Technocrats Or Black Helicopters?, Ryan Murphy
Intergovernmental Organisations And Economic Freedom: Wise Technocrats Or Black Helicopters?, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
This article explores the relationship between country membership in major intergovernmental organisations and economic freedom. While it makes no claims to have found any broad theoretically bound, robust causal mechanism, baseline fixed effects models establish relationships amongst economic freedom and membership in the EU, NATO, WTO, UN, OECD, World Bank, and IMF. Though the results are not simple, the strongest findings are negative relationships with the UN, IMF, and WTO, and positive relationships with the World Bank and possibly the EU.

The Role Of Leaders In Managing Envy And Its Consequences For Competition In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Charles E. Hoogland, Richard R. Smith
The Role Of Leaders In Managing Envy And Its Consequences For Competition In Organizations, Theresa M. Floyd, Charles E. Hoogland, Richard R. Smith
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
Leaders in organizations face numerous challenges. Among these is helping employees cope with the fact that, over time, some in the organization will succeed and some will fail, leading to potentially disruptive emotions. One of the leader’s roles is to understand and manage these emotions to ensure they do not result in negative interpersonal or organizational outcomes. Further, through their words and deeds, leaders can foster a culture in which more positive emotional reactions to others’ fortunes are more likely to occur, ultimately benefitting the individuals involved and the organization as a whole. Although there are numerous possible reactions to …

Small Business Start-Up/ Entrepreneurial Aid Plan, Dr. Michael Edmondson
2015-2016: Clinton, Iowa
This project plans to address how the City of Clinton can assist small or start-up businesses. Clinton has wonderful potential for small businesses and start-ups and the entrepreneurial minded to pursue opportunities and business ventures. However, the city has struggled to not only encourage such ventures, but provided a platform to have low-risk opportunities to start a business. This plan would provide methodology, guidelines and offer direction on how the City and Chamber of Commerce can better utilize this information.

The Precautionary Principle: What Is It, Where Did It Come From, How Should We Use It?, Yorgos Marinakis, Rainer Harms, Steven T. Walsh
The Precautionary Principle: What Is It, Where Did It Come From, How Should We Use It?, Yorgos Marinakis, Rainer Harms, Steven T. Walsh
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Since being globalized by inclusion in the 1980’s and 1990’s through several U.N. declarations and treaties, the Precautionary Principle has become a flashpoint internationally among scholars working in the fields of risk, international environmental law, European Union law and even U.S. federal law. The controversy surrounding the Precautionary Principle apparently arose and persists because the Principle is undertheorized. We revisit three fundamental questions: what is the Precautionary Principle, where did it come from, and how should we use it. Because the Precautionary Principle is a legal tool that is used internationally to manage technology, a comprehensive discussion of it is …
Product Diversification In Health Insurance With Comprehensive Coverage Benefits U.S. Health Insurers, Bo Shi, Etti G. Baranoff, Thomas W. Sager
Product Diversification In Health Insurance With Comprehensive Coverage Benefits U.S. Health Insurers, Bo Shi, Etti G. Baranoff, Thomas W. Sager
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
This paper studies the relationship between product diversification and financial performance in U.S. health insurers during 2005 – 2014. We focus on diversification among different types of comprehensive coverage – termed related diversification. We use a modified Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) as a proxy for product diversification and measure financial performance by both return on assets and return on capital. We find a robust positive relationship between product diversification and performance. Moreover, the positive relationship still holds when the performance measures are adjusted for volatility. These findings support the theoretical foundation of economies of scope and risk-reduction, as adapted to the …
Calculating The Euclidean Technology Distance Of Dyads Using Patent Citations, Don Goeltz, Jan Buzydlowski
Calculating The Euclidean Technology Distance Of Dyads Using Patent Citations, Don Goeltz, Jan Buzydlowski
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Calculating the technology base of a firm is a critical first step in studies of the technology strategies of a single entity and in making comparisons between the technology strategies of firms. For example, many studies of alliances and alliance portfolios require calculation of the technology distance or technology overlap between firm dyads. These studies typically use the patents of each partner dyad as the bases for the calculation. This paper introduces a new method of calculating a measure of technology overlap using the patent citations made in the patent applications. Each patent application lists the patented technologies that are …
A Post-Superstorm Sandy Study Of Small Business Disaster Preparedness And Perspectives On Planning For Future Incidents, Cynthia Scarinci
A Post-Superstorm Sandy Study Of Small Business Disaster Preparedness And Perspectives On Planning For Future Incidents, Cynthia Scarinci
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
This paper focuses on small business preparedness for disaster, after Superstorm Sandy, to determine whether the disaster experience encouraged business owners to develop contingency and disaster recovery plans to better prepare for future incidents. The methodology used for this research was a combination survey/interview of small businesses impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The survey results revealed that the majority of respondents did not have plans in place prior to Sandy and that a small percentage developed contingency or disaster recovery plans to better prepare for future incidents, post-Sandy. The interview portion of the research provided valuable insight about how these businesses …
A Comparison Between Organizational Behavior And Scientific Laws, George Kenyon, Brian Neureuther, George Irwin
A Comparison Between Organizational Behavior And Scientific Laws, George Kenyon, Brian Neureuther, George Irwin
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
The impact of process change is explored through the lens of scientific law. Conceptual links between truths found in the physical sciences and truths found in the managerial sciences are sought in order to understand the complexities of process change. The First Law of Thermodynamics is explores to understand the impact of physics on how managers may view process change. Demand elasticity, capacity management, and operational theory are explored and clarified based on the interface of the laws of physics and the business unit.

Mindful Consumer Behavior: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Nada Nasr Bechwati, Annelie Mounkkaddem Baalbaki, Najoie I. Nasr, Imad B. Baalbaki
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
We compare Lebanese and American consumers on mindful consumption behavior. We define mindful consumers as individuals who, in all stages of consumer behavior, are aware of themselves, their communities and the society at large and behave in ways that contribute to the well-being of all these entities. We conducted a two-phase survey on a total of 210 consumers, 97 in the USA and 113 in Lebanon. We found significant impacts of consumers’ life beliefs such as satisfaction with life, locus of control, and temporal focus and of life values on different aspects of their mindful behavior.

Influence Of Supply Chain Management Initiatives On The Basic Drivers Of The European Manufacturers Profitability, Farzad Mahmoodi, Peter Hofer, Heimo Losbichler
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Obtaining substantial financial benefits from supply chain management initiatives is of central importance to senior management. In this study we empirically investigate the impact of the basic drivers of profitability that are influenced by supply chain initiatives (i.e., revenues, costs, fixed assets and working capital) on the profitability of more than 20,000 large and mid-size European manufacturers. The existence of correlations among the basic drivers of profitability indicates that supply chain initiatives can have multiple (sometimes unintended) consequences, and points to the importance of managing and controlling all basic drivers simultaneously. In particular, our analysis reveals that despite the growing …

Increasing Intrapreneurial Intentions Among Business Students: Using A Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (Nebic) Theory Team Project, Jennifer Nicholson, Yide Shen, Darren Nicholson
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
Institutions of higher education are placing greater emphasis on entrepreneurship education. Yet, in reality, few students will actually use their entrepreneurial skills to start a business. Instead, many will go to work for existing organizations as intrapreneurs – those who contribute to entrepreneurship at the firm level. This paper describes how we developed and implemented a team project using the Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (NEBIC) theory as a means to promote intrapreneurial intention in a Technology Entrepreneurship course. We also present pre- and post-project survey results showing that completing the NEBIC project increased students’ intention to become intrapreneurs.

The Impact Of Perceived Subgroup Formation On Transactive Memory Systems And Performance In Distributed Teams, Yide Shen, M. J. Gallivan, X. Tang
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
With distributed teams becoming increasingly common in organizations, improving their performance is a critical challenge for both practitioners and researchers. This research examines how group members' perception of subgroup formation affects team performance in fully distributed teams. The authors propose that individual members' perception about the presence of subgroups within the team has a negative effect on team performance, which manifests itself through decreases in a team's transactive memory system (TMS). Using data from 154 members of 41 fully distributed teams (where no group members were colocated), the authors found that members' perceptions of the existence of subgroups impair the …

I Am Distinctive When I Belong: Meeting The Need For Optimal Distinctiveness Through Team Identification, Michael M. Goldman, S. Chadwick, D. C. Funk, A. Wocke
Sport Management
The development of stronger team identity has previously been explained through the social identity aspect of belonging. Although this has contributed much to our understanding of sport fans, it has neglected an alternative explanation for team identity, specifically the search for distinctiveness. How then do fans develop stronger team identity by 'standing out' as opposed to 'fitting in'? This paper provides evidence of seven identity management strategies used by fans with a strong psychological connection to their chosen team. Saturation sampling was employed to interview 29 South African rugby union fans via semi-structured interviews, followed by a directed approach to …
