According to the shareholder theory, the sole social responsibility of a company is to increase its profits and shareholders’ value (Friedman, 1970). However, the stakeholder theory states that a company owes the social responsibility to a wider group of stakeholders (Donaldson & Preston, 1995). The object is to investigate the relationship between consumers’ sense of security of a store and their purchasing intention from the store. This was investigated by evaluating how perceptions of security vary among pure play websites with no social presence on the one hand and with social presence on the other; and click and mortar websites with no social presence on the one hand, and social presence on the other. It was also investigated by evaluating how social presence might mitigate the risk of security perceived by consumers. Combatting Biases: Illusory Imagery In Us News Coverage On Central American Immigration, Katharine Poor

This paper comprises of original research and analysis of contemporary news media discourse surrounding Central American immigration in the United States. Subjects of study included more than 50 news articles, images, and videos from a variety of major politically-unaffiliated news outlets for English-speaking audiences. Rhetoric was analyzed in representations of the Central American immigration “crisis” that sparked a trend of media coverage in 2014, as well as several articles that covered events leading up to the “crisis.” Common rhetorical analogies ascertained through media analyses include the representation of immigrants as aliens, diseases, parasites, floods, criminals, natural disasters, terrorists, and drug …

In this dissertation, we leverage predictive and prescriptive analytics to develop decision support systems to promote the use of renewable energy in society. Since electricity from renewable energy sources is still relatively expensive, there are variety of financial incentive programs available in different regions. Our research focuses on financial incentive programs and tackles two main problem: 1) how to optimally design and control hybrid renewable energy systems for residential and commercial buildings given the capacity based and performance based incentives, and 2) how to develop a model-based system for policy makers for designing optimal financial incentive programs to promote investment …

Recognizing the need for companies and organizations to retain employees, one of the topics given very little attention in the research is non-attendance in face-to-face training. This study presents findings from the analysis of archival data from a 2013 employee education survey. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted on two sets of data exploring barriers to participation in employee-development education classes. Extrinsic factors were identified as ‘more important things take priority’ and ‘circumstances beyond the employee’s control’. Intrinsic factors were identified as ‘personal motivation challenges’. These factors emerged as potential reasons for non-participation or no-show behavior in employee education courses. Possible …

Terrorism in the new millennium has morphed drastically since the 1970s. The terrorist organizations of today are a hybrid between the insurgent group models of the 1960s and modern terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda. This hybrid model has created what has become a transnational insurgency recruited, trained, and led by major terrorist networks such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Even smaller regional groups such as Boko Haram have surpassed merely conducting terrorist attacks. These smaller groups are also focused on controlling territory. This study was conducted to determine the impact of the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality assessment on team success in the workplace. This was achieved through the collection of qualitative data by way of interviews from individual employees and teams about their perceptions of how their behavior changed since taking the MBTI. The study aimed to give insight into how teams function once they have taken a personality assessment and if they had improved self-awareness, reduced conflict, and prove better at accomplishing a given task. This study is a qualitative research study that investigates how women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industry navigate a male-dominated workplace. The purpose of this research is to determine how women who are employed in the STEM industry are affected by an environment fueled by an extreme lack of gender diversity. The research, which will be completed by March 23^rd, intends to reveal how women adapt their mindset and behaviors as a result.
