Meet Cara Carter, fourth-year pharmacy student

Cara Carter grew up on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri. While she lived in a decidedly urban environment, Carter says the health care experiences in her hometown are not that different than those found in rural settings.

“It is definitely a health care desert so I know what it is like for there not to be a doctor for miles,” says Carter, a fourth-year student pharmacist attending East Tennessee State University’s Gatton College of Pharmacy. “There are veterinarian offices and some clinics that take place for back-to-school physicals, but there is no …

Generation Rx and CPNP students help lead Anti-Overdose Training

LEBANON, Va. If a program piloted in Southwest Virginia and metro Richmond goes well, saving someone from an opioid overdose could be as simple as administering an EpiPen.

The first public training for REVIVE!, a project overseen by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, was held Thursday afternoon in Lebanon. In the pilot area -- in metro Richmond and in Washington, Wise, Russell, Buchanan, Lee, Scott, Dickenson and Tazewell counties -- organizations like One Care of Southwest Virginia are training folks to recognize the signs of drug overdose …

Exploring The Signaling Function Of Idiosyncratic Deals And Their Interaction, Violet T. Ho, Dejun Tony Kong Jan 2015

Exploring The Signaling Function Of Idiosyncratic Deals And Their Interaction, Violet T. Ho, Dejun Tony Kong

Management Faculty Publications

By adopting signaling theory as the overarching framework and integrating self-determination theory, we examined the signaling function of task i-deals, financial i-deals, and their interaction. Across three studies with varying measures, we found that task i-deals, independently and jointly with financial i-deals, conveyed a positive message regarding competence in that they were positively related to recipients’ competence need satisfaction. In turn, competence need satisfaction positively related to organizational citizenship behaviors. The competence-signaling function of task i-deals and task-financial i-deals interaction remained significant even after accounting for leader-member exchange, organization-based self-esteem, and perceived organizational support. Financial i-deals, however, did not exhibit …

Adjustment Strategies And Business Success In Minority-Owned Family Firms, Yoon G. Lee, Margaret A. Fitzgerald, Kenneth R. Bartkus, Myung S. Lee

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

With data from the 2003 and 2005 National Minority Business Owners Survey, we examined the extent to which minority business owners differ from nonminority business owners in their reported use of adjustment strategies, and the relationship between the use of adjustment strategies and perceived business success. The sample consisted of 193 African American, 200 Mexican American, 200 Korean American, and 210 white business owners. Mexican American and Korean American business owners reported higher levels of adjustment strategy use than African American and white business owners. The ordinary least squares show that reallocating family resources to meet business needs and reallocating …

A Gender Integrative Conceptualization Of Entrepreneurship, Susan Clark Muntean, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan Jan 2015

A Gender Integrative Conceptualization Of Entrepreneurship, Susan Clark Muntean, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Guided by feminist perspectives, we critique existing approaches to the study of women’s entrepreneurship on epistemological grounds and suggest that the entrepreneurship field needs to recognize gendered assumptions in theorizing. Deploying a feminist framework, we suggest that understanding the “gender gap” in entrepreneurship requires focus on institutional and structural barriers women entrepreneurs face. Existing studies of women entrepreneurs often compare women with men without considering how gender and gender relations impact the very concepts and ideas of entrepreneurship. We propose, therefore, a conceptualization of entrepreneurship that illuminates gender bias and calls attention to the interrelated individual, institutional, and structural barriers …

Examining The Age—Performance Relationship For Entrepreneurs: Does The Innovativeness Of A Venture Make A Difference?, Kanti V. Prasad, Kyle Ehrhardt, Yiyuan Liu, Kamlesh Tiwari Jan 2015

Examining The Age—Performance Relationship For Entrepreneurs: Does The Innovativeness Of A Venture Make A Difference?, Kanti V. Prasad, Kyle Ehrhardt, Yiyuan Liu, Kamlesh Tiwari

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Whether older or younger entrepreneurs may be better positioned to achieve performance outcomes for their ventures is a much debated question. Here, we draw on Galenson’s theory of creativity to propose a contingency perspective for understanding the relationship between entrepreneur age and venture performance, suggesting that a venture’s level of innovativeness plays a moderating role. Results from a representative sample of 1,182 nascent entrepreneurs revealed mixed support for our hypotheses. While a negative relationship was found between entrepreneur age and performance for those developing “innovative” ventures, no relationship was found between entrepreneur age and performance for those developing “imitative” ventures.

An Entrepreneurial Context For The Theory Of The Firm: Exploring Assumptions And Consequences, Arturo E. Osorio, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan, Paul F. Donnelly

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

While entrepreneurship may be driven by personal interests and lifestyle choices, entrepreneurial actions are not only economically driven opportunity-searching processes but also enactments of social transformation that may or may not lead to socioeconomic benefits. We advance that exploring these entrepreneurial processes can inform a theory of the firm that may explain how socioeconomic processes shape the socioeconomic environment of communities while serving individuals. This article discusses several understandings of the firm, as theorized in extant literature. Guided by these different conceptualizations, we present a case study of an artist and artisan cluster in Western Massachusetts to demonstrate various understandings …

Charting New Directions In Entrepreneurship Research, Vishal K. Gupta, Golshan Javadian

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Like all peer-reviewed journal articles, the papers published here were subjected to rigorous peer review and editorial oversight. This screening was in addition to the fact that authors could submit papers to the special issue of New England Journal of Entrepreneurship only if the paper had previously been presented at an Eastern Academy of Management (EAM) conference (either in the United States or internationally). Thus, each of the articles in this special issue has been through at least two independent peer-review processes, one at an EAM conference and another at NEJE. This rigorous two-tier procedure resulted in a selection of …

The Impact Of Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Social Capital Related Motivations, Claudia Gomez, B. Yasanthi Perera, Judith Y. Weisinger, David H. Tobey, Taylor Zinsmeister-Teeters Jan 2015

The Impact Of Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Social Capital Related Motivations, Claudia Gomez, B. Yasanthi Perera, Judith Y. Weisinger, David H. Tobey, Taylor Zinsmeister-Teeters

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

The immigrant entrepreneurship literature indicates that immigrant entrepreneurs reap numerous benefits from their co-ethnic communities’ social capital. These benefits, however, often come at a price because scholars note the potential for this community social capital to impose limitations on the entrepreneurs. While the literature largely focuses on the benefits of social capital, there is no research on what motivates the immigrant entrepreneurs to engage with their co-ethnic community in terms of contributing to, and utilizing, their co-ethnic communities’ social capital, and the consequences these may have on their enterprises. Addressing this gap in the literature is important in the development …

Relational Ties In Emerging Markets: What Is Their Contribution To Sme Growth?, Natalya Totskaya Jan 2015

Relational Ties In Emerging Markets: What Is Their Contribution To Sme Growth?, Natalya Totskaya

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Prior studies argue that social capital is vital for firm growth. Adding to this line of research, this paper provides more evidence regarding the contribution of bonding and bridging social ties to various aspects of small-l and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development. Building on the original data from Russia, this paper investigates the effects of firm-internal and firm-external relational ties on SME performance and geographic expansion. The findings indicate that horizontal bridging ties facilitate specific strategies of SME growth. Thus, this paper supports prior research conducted in the Asian context, and allows for extending the outcomes of bonding and bridging social …

Entrepreneurial Behavior During Industry Emergence: An Unconventional Study Of Discovery And Creation In The Early Pc Industry, Alka Gupta, Christoph K. Streb, Vishal K. Gupta, Erik Markin

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Acting entrepreneurially in nascent industries is a complex endeavor characterized by uncertainty and ambiguity. Nevertheless, entirely new industries do emerge, often as a direct result of entrepreneurial behavior. We extend and apply discovery and creation approaches to study entrepreneurial behavior during industry emergence by means of qualitative analysis of a film about the personal computer (PC) industry’s formative years. We find that discovery and creation behavior are fundamentally interrelated and share a common element: bricolage. Moreover, ideological activism is a major component of entrepreneurial behavior in a new industry’s formative years during both creation and discovery processes. Implications for research …

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

Enacting Change Through Borrowed Legitimacy: An Institutional Perspective, Eric Shaunn Mattingly, Jonathan H. Westover Jan 2015

Enacting Change Through Borrowed Legitimacy: An Institutional Perspective, Eric Shaunn Mattingly, Jonathan H. Westover

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The notion of enacting change in lieu of the forces that promote institutionalization is troublesome to Institutional Theory, which generally predicts isomorphism as a condition of survival. Here, we offer borrowed legitimacy through coalitions as an explanation for how an organization might successfully deviate from social norms to enact change, yet still gain sufficient cognitive and sociopolitical legitimacy for survival. We explain that borrowing legitimacy through a coalition allows an illegitimate organization to impose an alternative future despite institutional pressures for its convergence to social norms, rules and expectations.

Balancing Act: Successfully Combining Creativity And Accountability In The Practice Of Marriage And Family Therapy, Nathalie Duque Bello Jan 2015

Balancing Act: Successfully Combining Creativity And Accountability In The Practice Of Marriage And Family Therapy, Nathalie Duque Bello

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

The conditions that allowed early MFTs the freedom to creatively explore different interventions and theories of change are no longer available in today’s mental health care system. Although there are many benefits to the structure of managed behavioral healthcare organizations, a thorough review of the literature demonstrates that many therapists working in managed care agencies struggle with maintaining their theoretical creativity, claiming third-party payers’ service requirements and paperwork a barrier to their creativity. A phenomenological transcendental research method was utilized to understand the phenomenon of successfully combining creativity and accountability in the practice of marriage and family therapy from the …

Next Focal Point Of China's Stock Market: Earnings-But Can We Trust The Numbers?, Shaomin Li, Seung Ho Park

Management Faculty Publications

[Introduction] The recent stock market turmoil and the economic slowdown in China have kept analysts busy projecting where the economy is going and what the government will do. The Chinese government has also issued a number of reforms of state-owned enterprises and other aspects of the economy. However, these reforms and increased scrutiny by both regulators and investors will be futile unless larger problems with market fundamentals in Chinese companies are addressed.

While the world's attention has been fixed on what the Chinese government is going to do next, there has been a tendency to neglect market fundamentals and to …

The Landwarnet School, The Army Learning Model, And Appreciative Inquiry: How Is A Centralized Training Organization Improved By Introducing Decentralization?, Lisa Jayne Stamper

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This exploratory, qualitative case study describes how a centralized training organization (LandWarNet School) was improved by introducing decentralization (Army Learning Model) toward “the best competitive position” or "sweet spot," defined by Brafman and Beckstrom (2006) as “enough decentralization for creativity, but sufficient structure and controls to ensure consistency” (pp. 189, 191). Any presence of the six chaordic elements of a decentralized organization, as described by Hock (1999), was also considered.

LandWarNet School (LWNS) trains approximately 6000 US Army Soldiers annually and is centrally organized. The new Army Learning Model (ALM) is a vision for a more decentralized training approach where …

The Successful Implementation Of Supply Chain Management Technology Initiatives: Technological Readiness As A Key Indicator, Scott R. Cox Jan 2015

The Successful Implementation Of Supply Chain Management Technology Initiatives: Technological Readiness As A Key Indicator, Scott R. Cox

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The emergence of what is modern supply chain management (SCM) can be attributed to the revolutionary advances in information technology over the past three decades. Despite significant investment in supply chain management technology (SCMT) and the implementation process, many companies still experience considerable complications during SCMT implementation. There is a dearth of research concerning the implementation of SCMT. A proven path to supply chain technology implementation has yet to be established. In an effort to address this gap, this dissertation considers the role of technological readiness as a part of a comprehensive model for SCMT implementation. A model is proposed …

Australian Charity Organisations: A Study Of Audit Fee Determinants, Andrew Priest Jan 2015

Australian Charity Organisations: A Study Of Audit Fee Determinants, Andrew Priest

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Accounting, and more specifically auditing, plays an important role in charity organisations’ accountability processes. This has been highlighted with the commencement of the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission in 2012 heralding a new era of accountability and regulation. It is in this context that this study used a stratified sample of 101 Australian charities’ 2011-2012 annual reports to study five aspects of the charity audit market, which formed its objectives. These were: a) to estimate and develop a model of Australian charity fee audit determinants; b) to determine if there was evidence of Big Four audit firm fee premiums in …

Generation Y Perceptions Of The Traditional Career Model, Aoife Kelliher

Theses

Generation Y will be expected to play the most significant role in the work place as their careers develop and older generations retire. Much of the research carried out on their work related values and career progression to date has relied on the viewpoints of Generation Y as undergraduates, prior to gaining substantial experience in the work place. This study responds to Ng and Gossett’s (2013) call for further research into the values, attitudes and expectations of young people as they will emerge as leaders of tomorrow. The purpose of the study is to examine if the traditional career model …

Adding Value For An Organisation Through Employee Engagement: A Case Study Of A Temporary Workforce, Hannah O'Shea Jan 2015

Adding Value For An Organisation Through Employee Engagement: A Case Study Of A Temporary Workforce, Hannah O'Shea

Theses

Over the last 10 years, the requirement for temporary workers has shown significant increases. Casual and part-time workers, on the live register, have increased during this period from 20,752 to 71,744. In March 2013 the numbers rose to 89,798, an all-time high in Ireland (Central Statistics Office, 2014). Consequently, it is becoming increasingly important to observe how organisations undertake engagement with temporary employees. This research study focusses on the employee engagement levels of a temporary agency workforce, working in an e-commerce organisation, on behalf of a third party agency. Questionnaires were completed by 55 temporary agency workers and three direct …

Enhancing The Irish Adventure Tourism Product Through Networking, Philip Stallard

Theses

The adventure tourism industry is experiencing a period of accelerated growth (UNWTO, 2014) and is increasingly being recognised as a source of huge potential for Ireland (Failte Ireland, 2013). The adventure tourism industry in Ireland is highly fragmented, unregulated and mainly comprised of micro enterprises largely based in rural and isolated locations. These characteristics combine to enhance the uniqueness of the adventure product but also bring challenges for business development. Many challenges facing adventure tourism operators can be alleviated by strategic networking. The benefits of engaging in effective business networking range from aspects of learning and exchange, business activity and …

Customer Relationship Management (Crm) Of Hotels In The Context Of Variety-Seeking Behaviour (Vsb), Maduka Udunuwara Jan 2015

Customer Relationship Management (Crm) Of Hotels In The Context Of Variety-Seeking Behaviour (Vsb), Maduka Udunuwara

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study combined two significant areas in marketing, customer relationship management (CRM) and variety-seeking behaviour (VSB), which are paradoxical constructs due to their contradictory intentions. While organisations implement various customer relationship management practices with an intention of retaining customers and generating loyalty, a preference for variety-seeking behaviour can make customers switch. This study investigated the impact of variety-seeking behaviour on generating outcomes of customer relationship management practices in the hotel context, by focusing exclusively on leisure travellers.

Even though customer relationship management is widely adopted in the hotel domain, much of its discussions are on implementation related aspects, rather than …
