Evaluating Educational Practices For Positively Affecting Student Perceptions Of A Sales Career, Shannon Cummins, James W. Peltier, Nadia Pomirleanu, James Cross, Rob Simon

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

Despite demand for new graduates seeking a sales position, student reticence toward pursuing a sales career remains. While all students will not choose a sales career, diminishing the existence of sales-related misconceptions among the student population should establish sales as a viable career path for a larger number of students. We test six educational interventions in large Principle of Marketing classes from three different universities (n = 1,355) to help identify educational practices for reducing student reticence toward a career in sales. Our results show that while all six educational approaches raise students’ perceptions and interest in a selling …

A Tale Of Two Communities: The Journey To Subjective Well-Being Via A Sense Of Community, Noble C. Philip

Student Scholarship

Cities are spatial concentrations of people and economic activities which create complex relationships. The focus of this research was to better understand the challenges of these interactions, the creation of a sense of community and the impact on the sense of well-being experienced by residents of inner city residents. Little research has been done to date on this. This qualitative study employs grounded theory to explore the lived experiences of residents in two inner city communities in the Caribbean. This study included a total of 44 interviews, 21 residents from the first or ‘prospering’ community and 21 residents from the …

Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2015

Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On Sunday, with no real NFL Football to clutter the world of sport, the man who I once referred to as the “Acting Commissioner for Life,” will retire. It turned out that the “Acting-Commissioner for Life” was very nearly Commissioner for Life. It is clear that over his long and rocky tenure as Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig left a massive legacy. The business and sport of major league baseball was impacted for good and for ill by the man who began his professional life selling used cars in Milwaukee. He will end his tenure as Commissioner by becoming the …

Results Of The December Survey Of Nebraska Business: January 21, 2015, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

Respondents to the December 2014 Survey of Nebraska Business maintained an optimistic outlook for sales and employment. December respondents were much more likely to expect sales to rise (28%) than fall (14%) at their business over the next six months and more likely to plan to increase (16%) than reduce employment (4%). Within the state, optimism about employment was broadbased. However, there were differences in the sales outlook. Respondents from the Omaha area were the most optimistic about sales. Respondents from Southeast and Central Nebraska were close to state averages. Respondents from West Nebraska had a neutral sales outlook and …

An Increasing Usefulness For Managerial Communication Research On The Main Topics Of Management, Reginald L. Bell, Deborah Roebuck

Faculty Articles

Effective communication is necessary across all management tiers and functions. In addition, it is an integral part of managerial decision-making. Over the last 10 years, interest in the nuances of communication as related to management has intensified. These studies have fostered diverse approaches to linking management and communication. Our investigation, using 2x5 and 2x4 factorial ANOVAs, reveals that differences exist among the means of five professional communication fields. Numerous articles published between 2004 and 2013 were examined, and we found an increasing usefulness for managerial communication research on the main topic of management.

Tour Guides And The Mediation Of Difficult Memories: The Case Of Dublin Castle, Ireland, Bernadette Quinn, Theresa Ryan Jan 2015

Tour Guides And The Mediation Of Difficult Memories: The Case Of Dublin Castle, Ireland, Bernadette Quinn, Theresa Ryan

Articles

This research seeks to furthering understandings of how Tour Guides interpret memories at heritage sites when the memories at issue are difficult yet subtle and not always apparent to tourists. Specifically, it explores how Dublin Castle, formerly the seat of British rule in Ireland, is captured in narratives presented to tourists that often include Britons. Representing the site is made challenging because some visitors have little knowledge of the site's history, while others are well informed and hold strong political views. The findings show that Guides select largely depoliticized narratives, strongly influenced by their personal interests and experiences. Some hint …
