Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the world of academic research seems to be increasingly dominated by impact factors and performance indicators, it takes a personal tragedy to remind us of the human bonds we enjoy as part of our research and the outstanding people we have the privilege of meeting on our academic journeys. For the trust research community, Graham Dietz was unsurpassed in inspiring others with his extraordinary passion and insight. We are very sad to share the news that Graham passed away on Saturday, 20 December 2014, following the aftereffects of a heart attack a week earlier.

The theoretical development and empirical testing of the effects of humility in the organizational sciences is surprisingly rare. This is especially pronounced in the study of leadership in Asian contexts. To address this we employ a qualitative approach to examine the conceptualization of leader humility in Singapore and assess whether this conceptualization differs from other emerging conceptualizations of leader humility. In Study 1, using semi-structured interviews of 25 Singaporeans, we identified nine major dimensions of humble leader behaviors and explored our participants' beliefs about culturally-based differences in leader humility. In Study 2 (N = 307), we generalized our findings …

Mindfulness At Work: Antecedents And Consequences Of Employee Awareness And Absent-Mindedness, Jochen Reb, Jayanth Narayanan, Zhi Wei Ho Feb 2015

Mindfulness At Work: Antecedents And Consequences Of Employee Awareness And Absent-Mindedness, Jochen Reb, Jayanth Narayanan, Zhi Wei Ho

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The present study examines antecedents and consequences of two aspects of mindfulness in a work setting: employee awareness and employee absent-mindedness. Using two samples, the study found these two aspects of mindfulness to be beneficially associated with employee well-being, as measured by emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction, and psychological need satisfaction, and with job performance, as measured by task performance, organizational citizenship behaviors, and deviance. These results suggest a potentially important role of mindfulness at the workplace. The study also found that organizational constraints and organizational support predicted employee mindfulness, pointing to the important role that the organizational environment may play …

A Career Stage Perspective On Employees' Preferred Psychological Contract Contributions And Inducements, Chin Heng Low, Prashant Bordia Feb 2015

A Career Stage Perspective On Employees' Preferred Psychological Contract Contributions And Inducements, Chin Heng Low, Prashant Bordia

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The employer–employee relationship is underpinned by a psychological contract, referring to employees’ beliefs about the exchange of employee contributions and employer inducements. While there is limited understanding of how employers can shape psychological contracts to meet employees’ needs and aspirations, meeting these needs requires understanding employees’ preferences for psychological contract contributions and inducements. The authors propose that career stage models can be used to achieve such understanding. Using the career stage models of Dalton, Thompson, and Price (1977) and Super (1957), insights are derived into the preferred contributions and inducements at various points in an employee’s career lifecycle. These insights …

Acknowledging Individual Responsibility While Emphasizing Social Determinants In Narratives To Promote Obesity-Reducing Public Policy: A Randomized Experiment, Jeff Niederdeppe, Sungjong Roh, Michael A. Shapiro Feb 2015

Acknowledging Individual Responsibility While Emphasizing Social Determinants In Narratives To Promote Obesity-Reducing Public Policy: A Randomized Experiment, Jeff Niederdeppe, Sungjong Roh, Michael A. Shapiro

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study tests whether policy narratives designed to increase support for obesity-reducing public policies should explicitly acknowledge individual responsibility while emphasizing social, physical, and economic (social) determinants of obesity. We use a web-based, randomized experiment with a nationally representative sample of American adults (n = 718) to test hypotheses derived from theory and research on narrative persuasion. Respondents exposed to narratives that acknowledged individual responsibility while emphasizing obesity’s social determinants were less likely to engage in counterargument and felt more empathy for the story’s main character than those exposed to a message that did not acknowledge individual responsibility. Counterarguing and …

An Anatomy Of State Control In The Globalization Of State-Owned Enterprises, Hao Liang, Bing Ren, Sunny Li Sun Feb 2015

An Anatomy Of State Control In The Globalization Of State-Owned Enterprises, Hao Liang, Bing Ren, Sunny Li Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Integrating agency theory with institutional analysis in international business, we propose a state-control perspective to analyze government-control mechanisms in emerging economies’ globalization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). We identify two types of state control that influence SOEs’ globalization decisions and the degree of globalization: state ownership control and executives’ political connections, both of which are contingent upon the home country’s evolving institutional environments. Using a two-step corporate globalization decision model and 17,272 firm-year observations of non-financial, Chinese-listed companies, we find a strong impact of both types of state control on SOEs’ globalization, although the impacts differ between the periods before and …

Anchors Weigh More Than Power: Why Absolute Powerlessness Liberates Negotiators To Achieve Better Outcomes, Michael Schaerer, Roderick I. Swaab, Adam D. Galinsky Feb 2015

Anchors Weigh More Than Power: Why Absolute Powerlessness Liberates Negotiators To Achieve Better Outcomes, Michael Schaerer, Roderick I. Swaab, Adam D. Galinsky

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The current research shows that having no power can be better than having a little power. Negotiators prefer having some power (weak negotiation alternatives) to having no power (no alternatives). We challenge this belief that having any alternative is beneficial by demonstrating that weak alternatives create low anchors that reduce the value of first offers. In contrast, having no alternatives is liberating because there is no anchor to weigh down first offers. In our experiments, negotiators with no alternatives felt less powerful but made higher first offers and secured superior outcomes compared with negotiators who had weak alternatives. We established …

Momentum Life Cycle Around The World, Frank Weikai Li, K. C. John Wei Feb 2015

Momentum Life Cycle Around The World, Frank Weikai Li, K. C. John Wei

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The momentum life cycle (MLC) hypothesis first proposed by Lee and Swaminathan (2000) applies also to global markets. Early-stage strategies significantly outperform the late-stage and conventional strategies in most countries. Individualism culture is positively associated with late-stage but unrelated to early-stage momentum profitability, suggesting that early- and late-stage momentums are driven by different underlying mechanisms. Consistent with Stein’s (2009) model that arbitrageurs could amplify mispricing, we find that late-stage momentum profits are more pronounced in countries with lower limits to arbitrage. Furthermore, we find that the MLC also applies to exchange traded funds in the United States.

Essays On Real Estate Investment Trusts, Jiajin Chen Feb 2015

Essays On Real Estate Investment Trusts, Jiajin Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is composed with two essays on real estate investment trusts. The first chapter examines REIT IPOs initial-day, short-run and long-run performance using a large sample of 370 REIT IPOs from four continents (14 different countries) during the 1996-2010 period. The result shows that (1) the newly-established REITs in other countries exhibit similar initial-day return pattern as in the U.S., (2) the low initial-day return might be caused by the fund-like structure of REITs together with the real estate assets they hold, (3) the slightly positive initial-day return is offset by the poor performance in the 190-day days subsequent …

The New York Philharmonic Strike Of 1973, Kuan Cheng Lu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The New York Philharmonic Strike of 1973 is a story waiting to be told. The sole volume to mention it, John Canarina's The New York Philharmonic, devotes less than two pages to it. Until now, the full story has lain buried in archival documents, newspaper articles, and the memories of those who experienced it firsthand. This document represents the first comprehensive examination of this event. The research upon which it is based consists of: interviews with the New York Philharmonic members; research in the New York Philharmonic Archives; newspaper articles and reviews. The results are presented here in three …

Creating Customer Love: How Organizations Can Engender Positive Affect, In Online Product-Centered Communities, William J. Paolillo

Student Scholarship

The Internet has disrupted a company's traditional control over the communication they use to create positive affect. The compilation of reviewer posts plays a leading role in constructing a company's overall brand sentiment. What is less well understood is how companies can affect a positive post. The objective in this study was to develop a framework that demonstrates how customers and organizations interact online; as well as investigate the on-line interaction and the positive affect it generates. Using a structured equation model, we formulated hypothesis then tested that two distinct mechanisms work together to underpin the creation of a company's …

Sales People As Emotional Laborers, Jungkun Park, Weon Sang Yoo, Brian Rutherford Jan 2015

Sales People As Emotional Laborers, Jungkun Park, Weon Sang Yoo, Brian Rutherford

Asia Marketing Journal

Ever since Hochschild (1983) introduced the concept of emotional labor in the workplace, it has constantly interested researchers due to its impact on employees’ well-being as well as organizational outcomes. However, a thorough understanding of emotional labor and its relationship with various outcomes in sales people is not yet realized. In a systemic approach to the concept using quantitative methods is still necessary. The present study treats emotional labor as two factors (e.g. emotive dissonance and emotive effort). The psychological and behavioral outcomes of each sub-construct of emotional labor are investigated within a parsimonious framework. The findings suggest that emotional …

Event Valence Matters, Hyejin Lee, Jinhee Choi Jan 2015

Event Valence Matters, Hyejin Lee, Jinhee Choi

Asia Marketing Journal

Previous research has revealed that people feel past target events are more distant when they recall more intervening events, event markers, that are both accessible in memory and perceived to be related to that target event (Zauberman, Levav, Diehl, and Bhargave 2010). This phenomenon was called the systematic effect of event markers (SEEM). In this research, we explore the moderating effect of the valence of the target event on SEEM and suggest the difficulty of recalling event markers as the possible mechanism. Study 1 shows that SEEM mainly occur when the valence of the target event is negative rather than …

The Effect Of Congruency And Familiarity Of Background Music In Tv Advertising On The Music’S Role As A Retrieval Cue, Insuk Hwang, Hwa-Kyung Kim Jan 2015

The Effect Of Congruency And Familiarity Of Background Music In Tv Advertising On The Music’S Role As A Retrieval Cue, Insuk Hwang, Hwa-Kyung Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

Assuming that not all background music in advertising function as effective retrieval cues for the advertised messages, this study proposes that we should be able to distinguish the retrieval cue effect of music from the simple ad exposure effect. This study tries to identify which specific characteristics of music are related to the retrieval cue effect. Our experiment focuses on congruency and familiarity of music as key characteristics of music which affect the effectiveness of the music’s role as a retrieval cue for the advertised messages.
We used four groups of subjects to test the retrieval cue effect of the …

The Contingent Effect Of Marketing Alliances On Firm Profitability, Jongkuk Lee Jan 2015

The Contingent Effect Of Marketing Alliances On Firm Profitability, Jongkuk Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

Forming interfirm collaborative relationships has become a key aspect of a firm’s marketing strategies to create value for customers and achieve greater firm performance. While empirical findings are mixed in previous studies, this study is an effort to identify boundary conditions for the benefits of marketing alliances. We investigate internal and environmental factors that may magnify or constrain the effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability. Given the complementary relationship between marketing and R&D activities, we focus on a firm’s R&D intensity as an internal factor that may magnify the value of marketing alliances for firm performance. For environmental factors, …

Comparison Of Portfolio Selection And Performance: Shari’Ah-Compliant And Socially Responsible Investment Portfolios, Mehmet Asutay, Nur Dhani Hendranastiti

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This study examines the effect of Islamic screening criteria on Shari’ah-compliant portfolio selection and performance compared to Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) portfolio. Each portfolio constructed from 15 stocks based on FTSE 100 using data from year 1997. Mean-variance portfolio optimization is employed with some financial ratios added as constraints for the Shari’ah portfolio. Annual expected return of each portfolio from 2008 to 2013 is used to calculate Sharpe’s ratio, Treynor ratio and Jensen’s alpha as the performance measurement tools. Macroeconomic variables are assessed using ordinary least square to examine whether they influence the portfolios’ expected returns or not. The result …

Value Effect In Indonesian Stock Returns: The Implications For The Equity Mutual Fund Industry, Samuel Kristanto Utomo, Kevin Antony Tjandra

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

We extend the persistence and pervasiveness of the presence of value effect to Indonesian stock returns in the last two decades by utilizing data set that is relatively free of survivor bias and selection bias. Our finding shows that value portfolios have been able to outperform growth portfolios. Furthermore, the presence of the effect as an asset pricing factor, along with the size effect, can significantly explain the returns of the aggregate equity mutual funds in Indonesia and unveil that the equity mutual fund industry does not provide sufficient risk-adjusted return to cover trading costs and fund expenses. Our proposition …

Examining The Islamic Stock Market Efficiency: Evidence From Nonlinear Estar Unit Root Tests, Rahmat Heru Setianto, Turkhan Ali Abdul Manap

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This paper empirically examines the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) in the Islamic stock market namely Jakarta Islamic Index by emphasizing on the random walk behavior and nonlinearity. In the first step, we employ Brock et al. (1996) test to examine the presence of nonlinear behavior in Jakarta Islamic Index. The evidence of nonlinear behavior in the indices, motivate us to use nonlinear ESTAR unit root test procedure recently developed by Kapetanios et al. (2003) and Kruse (2011). The nonlinear unit root test procedure fail to rejects the null hypothesis of unit root for the indices, suggesting that Jakarta Islamic Index …
