#Handsonlearning: Lessons From Student "Takeover" Of Csb/Sju Social Media, Tiffany Clements, Kelly Berg

Forum Lectures

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, CSB and SJU communication students "took over" CSB/SJU institutional profiles on Instagram and Vine for six weeks in the spring of 2014. Students in the Communication Department's New Media Applications and Analysis course planned, prepared and shared photos and video for their assigned profile. Groups were responsible for setting goals for their takeover, creating a profile of a target audience and applying lessons learned about effective branding through visual communication.

In this presentation, Associate Professor Kelly Berg and CSB/SJU Social Media Specialist Tiffany Clements discuss learning outcomes from the collaboration and takeaways for future Communications and …

Defence Versus Offence: Disclosure And Media In Takeovers, Eda Orhun Feb 2015

Defence Versus Offence: Disclosure And Media In Takeovers, Eda Orhun

All Works

This paper analyzes a target firm's decision to voluntarily disclose information during a takeover event and the effect of such disclosures on the outcome of the takeover. In the model the acquirer may also run a media campaign. The model predicts that a voluntary disclosure of positive information by the target decreases the likelihood that the takeover succeeds. The empirical analysis confirms this prediction by showing that positive earnings forecasts by target firms during takeover events increase the probability of takeover failure. Overall, it is shown that information dissemination through voluntary disclosures by target firms is an important factor affecting …

Women, Confidence, And Leadership: What Do Utah Women Leaders Think?, Susan R. Madsen, Lyndee Anderson, Matthew Kelly, Jessica Rodriguez

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project team collected data from various sources to understand some of the issues in Utah regarding women, confidence, and leadership. Why does this matter? Utah consistently ranks at or near the bottom of national studies on the status of women. For example, in 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled“ The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This report ranked Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership.

Volatility Adds Risk For Market Orders, Steven D. Dolvin Feb 2015

Volatility Adds Risk For Market Orders, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

With a market order, trades transact at the current market price. With increased high frequency trading, more and more stocks are seeing dramatic swings in prices within a short time period. Such swings add risk for market orders, as investors may get a price vastly different from what they had expected. In such cases, limit orders may be useful to minimize price risk. See article here, WSJ.

Options allow investors to generate higher levels of returns (and losses) as compared to taking positions directly in the stocks that the options are derived from. For example, a recent MSN article discusses a trader that purchased $1.7 million worth of call options on AMAT. The stock price increased 5% in two days, resulting in a profit of $1.4 million, which is an 82% return.

International Investing, Steven D. Dolvin Feb 2015

International Investing, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Investing is a global activity, so there is often very little difference with regard to many activities (such as how margin works, order types, etc.). The biggest difference, however, is the possible impact of currency on returns. One argument is that currency fluctuations reduce return correlations, so they should not be hedged within a portfolio. Others, however, have recently turned to currency hedged investments to protect against the rising dollar when invested in foreign assets. See article here, Yahoo.

Research Framework, Strategies, And Applications Of Intelligent Agent Technologies (Iats) In Marketing, V. Kumar, Ashutosh Dixit, Rajshekar G. Javalgi, Mayukh Dass

Business Faculty Publications

In this digital era, marketing theory and practice are being transformed by increasing complexity due to information availability, higher reach and interactions, and faster speeds of transactions. These have led to the adoption of intelligent agent technologies (IATs) by many companies. As IATs are relatively new and technologically complex, several definitions are evolving, and the theory in this area is not yet fully developed. There is a need to provide structure and guidance to marketers to further this emerging stream of research. As a first step, this paper proposes a marketing-centric definition and a systematic taxonomy and framework. The authors, …

Differences In Leadership Styles Between Genders: Outcomes And Effectiveness Of Women In Leadership Roles, Naga Sai Sindhura Lakshmi Chaluvadi Feb 2015

Differences In Leadership Styles Between Genders: Outcomes And Effectiveness Of Women In Leadership Roles, Naga Sai Sindhura Lakshmi Chaluvadi

MBA Student Scholarship

Women, today constituting a large portion of the work force have very few leaders at the top constitutional or organizational positions. In this paper we try to analyze what’s causing hindrance to their growth focusing primarily, if there exists any differences in the leadership styles employed by male and female leaders. As was the case in previous literature, the evidence for sex differences in leadership behavior is still mixed, yet it is clear that these sex differences have not vanished. It is argued that sex differences in leadership styles are largely a consequence of the context in which male and …

A Taxonomy Of Emerging Markets, Alexander A. Assouad Feb 2015

A Taxonomy Of Emerging Markets, Alexander A. Assouad

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Focusing on emerging markets is now a significant imperative for business professionals as well as strategy, management, and international business (IB) scholars. However, there are no accepted categorizations of these countries. Furthermore, major international organizations, institutions, scholars, and multinational, all approach classifying these countries from a multitude of different perspectives. Using institutional theory as a framework and drawing on research from multiple disciplines such as IB, sociology, economics, and economic geography, this dissertation proposes a framework by which a more nuanced reclassification of emerging markets into eight subgroups is considered appropriate. The application of this multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach shows …

The Influence Of Others On The Vacation Experience: An Ethnographic Study Of Psychographics, Decision Making, And Group Dynamics Among Young Travelers, Edwin Torres Feb 2015

The Influence Of Others On The Vacation Experience: An Ethnographic Study Of Psychographics, Decision Making, And Group Dynamics Among Young Travelers, Edwin Torres

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The vacation experience is often enjoyed in the company of others. Whereas scholars have focused on the consumer behaviors of mature travelers, young travelers have received less attention. The present study explores customer-to-customer interactions among young travelers (in their 20s and 30s) within a European tour-group setting. Furthermore, it attempts to understand the influence such travelers have on one another. The decision-making patterns, role of the tour guide, group dynamics, and psychographic preferences are studied from an ethnographic approach. Results indicate that the young travel segment is not as homogeneous as previously conceived. Notable differences in activities, interests, and opinions …

Good Governance Is Good Politics, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Pakistan has been facing a unique and difficult dilemma for quite some time. The bureaucrats are unhappy that they are not allowed to do their job because of interference by the politicians. The citizens and society are highly disenchanted and dissatisfied as they are unable to access basic services the …

A Book Review: The Ten Golden Rules Of Leadership, Holly Moore Feb 2015

A Book Review: The Ten Golden Rules Of Leadership, Holly Moore

MBA Student Scholarship

In The Ten Golden Rules of Leadership: Classical Wisdom for Modern Leaders, authors Panos Mourdoukoutas and M.A. Soupios present a different approach to leadership. The authors take a back to basics approach with this book, segmenting leadership into ten main points derived from ten quotes from philosophers (or leaders) of ancient times. These quotes (or philosophies) are then further examined and applied to the meaning of leadership (as the author’s interpret them), resulting in The Ten Golden Rules of Leadership.
