Grey Matter(S): Embracing The Publisher Within, Lisa Brooks, Gabriela Fitz

The Foundation Review

Most foundations don’t think of themselves as publishers, yet many of them act as such – making information available by funding research and publications, or by authoring their own. And failing to think of these activities as publishing efforts has serious consequences for shared learning in the social sector.

The shift toward knowledge-sharing strategies and approaches that embrace new search technologies, the logic of open access and open source, and the realities of the Internet as a largely decentralized and dynamic selfpublishing space offers the possibility of coordinating publishing efforts, and possibly agreeing to the use of shared practices that …

Strategy Design Amid Complexity: Tools For Designing And Implementing Adaptive Funding Strategies, Erica Snow, Jewlya Lynn, Tanya Beer Jun 2015

Strategy Design Amid Complexity: Tools For Designing And Implementing Adaptive Funding Strategies, Erica Snow, Jewlya Lynn, Tanya Beer

The Foundation Review

Increasingly, foundations recognize the importance of designing adaptive strategies that can respond to complex environments and problems. Recent articles have cautioned against practices common in strategic philanthropy that hinder the ability of foundations and grantees to account for changing contexts and adapt their strategies accordingly.

But understanding the importance of and barriers to adaptive strategy is not sufficient. Foundations now need processes and tools to create and implement adaptive strategies while also addressing the core dilemmas such strategies create: managing accountability in the context of adaptation, adapting at the right level, and responding to changes in context without creating too …

Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr. Jun 2015

Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Many marketers recognize they have obligations toward the non-human world, obligations that are not fully understood. This chapter sheds light on how such marketers can justify their own feelings and persuade others. The chapter begins with the historical rise of environmental consciousness before discussing the two most influential of the Western ethical theories: Kantianism and utilitarianism. It then discusses their shortcomings before moving on to the sentimentalist approach to ethics that comes down to us from David Hume and Adam Smith. A direct line from the sentimentalist approach is drawn to the environmental/ecological ethics of Aldo Leopold. Much is left …

Flipping The Business Information Literacy Classroom: Redesign, Implementation And Assessment Of A Case Study, Ilana Stonebraker Jun 2015

Flipping The Business Information Literacy Classroom: Redesign, Implementation And Assessment Of A Case Study, Ilana Stonebraker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

A team of librarians at Purdue University transformed a business information literacy course from a traditional lecture, 40-student class into multiple sections of a flipped, 70-student classroom to meet the request that the successful course be required for all 500 undergraduate students. Scaling up required the adoption of flipped learning techniques for better utilization of library teaching resources. This case study provides key insights for others implementing credit classes or integrating similar content into one-shots or embedded work. It also describes the assessed results determined through student feedback (focus groups) and student performance (pre/post-tests).

Financial Advisor Fee Structure, Steven D. Dolvin Jun 2015

Financial Advisor Fee Structure, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Historically, most advisors earned their income based on commissions; however, to reduce churning and to better align interests with clients, most advisors have moved to a fee based platform, with many charging an annual fee of 1% of assets. Given the compounded impact of this cost over time, as well as the lack of value added, we may see another change, as some advisors are moving to a fee for service model. See article here, WSJ.

The Influence Of Leadership Style And Personal Costs On Fraud Whistleblowing Intent, Tonya D.W. Smalls Jun 2015

The Influence Of Leadership Style And Personal Costs On Fraud Whistleblowing Intent, Tonya D.W. Smalls

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Using an experimental approach, this study examines employees’ intention to report occupational fraud through various channels based on the leadership style (transformational or transactional) of the manager and the expected personal costs (either high or low) of reporting. The study also focuses on the influence of value congruence between the manager and the employee, as well as trust factors that motivate employees to report occupational fraud. In examining these issues, I consider two types of occupational fraud schemes (misappropriation of assets and financial statement fraud). Unexpectedly, the results indicate leadership style and/or personal costs do not have a significant influence …

Measuring Family Business Performance: A Holistic, Idiosyncratic Approach, Ralph I. Williams Jr Jun 2015

Measuring Family Business Performance: A Holistic, Idiosyncratic Approach, Ralph I. Williams Jr

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

For any type of organization, performance represents the measure of outcomes, goals, and aspirations vital to various organization stakeholders; thus performance is an important research variable (Seijts, Latham, Tasa, & Latham, 2004, Simon, 1964). Family businesses are different from non-family businesses in that the family subsystem and the business subsystem overlap and interact to form the family business system. The desired outcomes, goals, and aspirations of each family business are a product of its particular family and business sub-systems. Thus, in family business, especially privately owned entities, performance is of particular interest since families can set their goals in their …

Effortless Building Census, Sam Kome Jun 2015

Effortless Building Census, Sam Kome

Library Staff Publications and Research

Library headcounts are tedious, time-consuming, and subject to the vagaries of scheduling, attention to detail, and incomplete (especially for consortia). If we conduct them perfectly, on-schedule without fail we can gather at best the number of patrons seated in various areas of the library at two arbitrary times per day. We don't know their home campus. We don't know how patronage varies by time of day. If only there was an automatic way of conducting counts that was automatic, unsleeping, and could differentiate between campuses The wireless infrastructure is (hopefully) always on, and devices are nearly ubiquitous, and typically signed …
