Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: January 17, 2014, Eric Thompson, William Walstad, Shannon Mcclure, Mihdi Vahedi

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) increased by 0.78% during December 2013. The increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, follows a decline in November. Taken together, recent results for the LEI-N suggest that the Nebraska economy will grow only modestly in the second quarter of 2014, but that the rate of growth may begin to improve in June, as summer begins. During December, four components of the leading economic indicator expanded and two declined. Among expanding components, there was a solid increse in single-family building permits, consistent with the …

Changes To The Student Loan Experience: Psychological Predictors And Outcomes, Thomas Mueller

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study builds on the work of scholars who have explored psychological perceptions of the student loan experience. Survey analysis (N = 175) revealed a multidimensional model was developed through factor analysis and testing, which revealed four latent variables: Duress, Mandatory, Financial, and Success. Duress and Mandatory were found to be independent unique predictors of the student loan process. Though perceptions were not differentiated among groups, a predominant segment of respondents did not recall their loan interest rates or terms of repayment. Respondents acknowledged the availability of loans but did not correlate availability to the value of university degrees and …

Manhood And Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

ESPN, the Worldwide Breeder of ludicrous sports programming, reached a new low this week. The Network that brought you the biggest non-event on the annual sports calendar, the NFL draft, and then took it down another notch by televising the announcement of the NFL schedule, outdid itself once again by having a countdown to the unveiling of Mel Kiper’s mock draft. Did anyone care? Is Mel anything more than a parody of himself? Has ESPN totally lost its way? (The correct answers are no, no, and maybe.)

Investigating The Portrayal And Influence Of Sustainability Claims In An Environmental Advertising Context, Shannon Cummins, Timothy M. Reilly, Les Carlson, Stephen J. Grove, Michael J. Dorsch

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

The ability of consumer judges to identify sustainable messages in environmental advertising and the effect of these messages is explored. A content analysis provides insight into these judges’ perceptions of the depth of environmental advertising messages. An experiment investigates the influence of sustainable messages and includes collection of cognitive response data to evaluate the cognitive dimension of sustainability messages. Content analysis results suggest that sustainability messages may influence how environmental advertisements are perceived. These findings are supported by the cognitive response data, which shows cognitive differences across advertisements, and the experimental manipulation that suggests sustainable ads may be more involving …

The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, School Setting, And Experience On Student Leadership: Does It Really Matter?, Barry Z. Posner Jan 2014

The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, School Setting, And Experience On Student Leadership: Does It Really Matter?, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This research examined how gender, ethnicity, school setting, and experience influenced students' leadership practices. Significant differences were found in how student leaders behaved on the basis of these variables. However, further analyses suggested that these differences did not significantly influence the effectiveness of student leaders. That is, the most effective student leaders engaged in the five leadership practices more than the less effective leaders, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or school setting. The impact of these findings for both assessing student leaders as well as for developing their leadership capabilities is discussed, along with ideas for future studies.

Rethinking Fs-Isac: An It Security Information Sharing Network Model For The Financial Services Sector, Charles Zhechao Liu, Humayun Zafar, Yoris A. Au Jan 2014

Rethinking Fs-Isac: An It Security Information Sharing Network Model For The Financial Services Sector, Charles Zhechao Liu, Humayun Zafar, Yoris A. Au

Faculty Articles

This study examines a critical incentive alignment issue facing FS-ISAC (the information sharing alliance in the financial services industry). Failure to encourage members to share their IT security-related information has seriously undermined the founding rationale of FS-ISAC. Our analysis shows that many information sharing alliances’ membership policies are plagued with the incentive misalignment issue and may result in a “free-riding” or “no information sharing” equilibrium. To address this issue, we propose a new information sharing membership policy that incorporates an insurance option and show that the proposed policy can align members’ incentives and lead to a socially optimal outcome. Moreover, …

Volatility And Derivatives, Steven D. Dolvin Jan 2014

Volatility And Derivatives, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

There are six primary inputs used to determine the price of a stock option: underlying stock price, exercise price, time to expiration, volatility of the underlying stock's price, market interest rate, and dividend yield on the underlying stock. Each has a particular relation to option value. For example, as stock price increases, the value of a call would increase, while the value of a put would decrease. For volatility, an increase in volatility has a positive impact on the value of both puts and calls, since payoffs are asymmetric. That is, no matter how low the stock's price goes, all …
