Enterprise Content Management: Understanding The Taxonomy, Jake Zhu, Tony Coulson, Miyuan Shan, C.E. Tapie Rohm Jr.

Communications of the IIMA

In an effort to understand content, its taxonomy and management, we define content management as the process of managing the creation, categorization, delivery and archiving of content in which workflow and business processes are maximized. Built upon what industry experts have to offer about enterprise content taxonomy, we have enacted a framework to better understand, create and manage enterprise taxonomies. This framework will be able to integrate rich content, modern computing technology, advanced analytics, automated worlflow, business requirements and human resources into a process where companies can easily manage their information for decision making and gaining competitive advantages.

An Empirical Analysis Of Student Perceptions Of Website Components For Class Web-Sites, Jay M. Lightfoot Dec 2014

An Empirical Analysis Of Student Perceptions Of Website Components For Class Web-Sites, Jay M. Lightfoot

Communications of the IIMA

Technology has improved to the point where web-sites for every course taught by an instructor are possible. This has produced many instructional benefits; however, it has also created a new set of problems. The problem addressed by this paper is the question of which web-site components to include in the class web-site. This is important because different web components support different student learning styles. Because it is not feasible to include all known webcomponents, the instructor must select those components that are most useful and support the broadest group of students. To address this question, a survey instrument was developed …

Communications of the IIMA

The explosion in information technology in the last 20 years, and in particular, data communications networks, has had a major impact on ethical thinking and ethical issues. This has been manifested in the recent accounting and business scandals, as it is becoming apparent that the ethical dimensions of information systems-related business decisions cannot be safely ignored. It is important for business educators to introduce students to relevant ethical situations that they may face in the business world. This paper discusses the Information Systems ethical environment and students performance on business ethics cases in a telecommunications course. The results of this …

Communications of the IIMA

This paper reports on a longitudinal pedagogical study of performance and perceptions of 1021 students in 39 online and 25 face-to-face sections of seven different courses taught by six different professors. The differences between the students' perceptions of the quality of the instructors and student performance are statistically significant based on the mode of course delivery. Students rated the quality of instructors in the online courses higher for the duration of the study. Student grade averages are slightly lower in the online courses. For all of the other survey questions dealing with the evaluation of the courses and the instructors, …

The Impact Of Market Metaphysics On Information Infrastructure Decisions, Bernd Carsten Stahl Dec 2014

The Impact Of Market Metaphysics On Information Infrastructure Decisions, Bernd Carsten Stahl

Communications of the IIMA

One of the most pressing questions that governments and societies have to answer is how to develop the infrastructure of the expected information society. In this paper I will take a look at two archetypical positions: at a state-oriented and a market-oriented view. I will recount the arguments for both sides in order to then demonstrate that all of these arguments are in fact derivatives of the older discussion about state versus market that has been with us at least since Marx. I will then try to show that these arguments are based on metaphysical assumptions about the nature of …

Discussing Issues Of Information Technology In Country Development, Rami Al-Gharaibeh, William Acar, Andrew G. Kotulic, Thomas J. Froehlich

Communications of the IIMA

The development of countries with laggard economies is becoming a global concern. The harmful complications of poverty and illiteracy are beginning to show up outside those countries in violent forms. The precautions against this migration of harm are splitting the world apart at the same time as technology may become able to bring it together. Over the last few years, information technology (IT) has grown very fast and is still spreading into all aspects of life in developed countries. The recent research in those countries is bringing more evidence that IT is a leveraging tool for business and not a …

Developing A Metrics Framework For The Federal Government In Computer Security Incident Response, Vincent Sritapan, Walter Stewart, Jake Zhu, C.E. Tapie Rohm Jr. Jun 2014

Developing A Metrics Framework For The Federal Government In Computer Security Incident Response, Vincent Sritapan, Walter Stewart, Jake Zhu, C.E. Tapie Rohm Jr.

Communications of the IIMA

As technology advances and society becomes more dependent on information technology (IT), the exposure to vulnerabilities and threats increases. These threats pertain to industry as well as government information systems. There is, however, a lack in how we measure the performance and create accountability for computer security incident response (CSIR) capabilities. Many government organizations still struggle to determine what security metrics to use and how to find value within these metrics. To fill this apparent gap, a metrics framework has been developed for incident response to serve as an internal analysis, supporting continuous improvement in incident reporting and strengthening the …

his article discusses the importance of Joomla as a Content Management System that is used by 2.7% of the web and how a possible new malware exploit has been discovered. The PHP BASE64 malware exploit is a well-documented exploit of PHP but the implementation of this exploit as it relates to Joomla is a very ingenious method not previously used before, as far as the authors were able to discover. In this particularly case, PHP code is embedded in a GIF file to produce a very sophisticated and unique malware exploit to Joomla.

Electronic Student-Form Management System, Donia I. Alsayed

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The development of technology has made the world a smaller place where communicating instantaneously irrespective of the geographical location is a way of life. Electronic Forms (E-FORMS) are an easy way to communicate efficiently with students. At present, universities are still using old systems for communication where efforts to improve the system is a lethargic process. As most of these universities are still using student forms manually, the introduction of E-FORMS will speed up the whole process and positively impact in communicating efficiency. In addition, the inconvenience of making numerous visits to the university is sometimes seen as a hassle …

Communications of the IIMA

This paper investigates the key components of an intelligent web user interface to facilitate online investment as a novel approach to compensating for the impersonality of e-commerce. By analyzing challenges to online brokerage services and evaluating key criteria for a viable intelligence system, we develop a decision tree based intelligent web user interfaces model. The resulting intelligent model is intended to help online shoppers avoid common mistakes by means of implicit reasoning, flexible knowledge granularity, and effective reasoning-by-exception, which is significantly different from the traditional approaches that largely rely on assistance from remote control knowledge engines. The Development Of A Non-Profit Organization, Keep In Touch, As A Solution To The Problem Of Visitation, Shalom Z. Lapoint, Shalom Z. Lapoint

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This project discusses the development of Keep in Touch. Keep in Touch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is designed to aid the visitation process. Visitation is concerned with children and their families who have been separated. Reasons for separation vary; however, many children have been separated and would benefit greatly from a local visitation program. Items such as children’s rights, California’s mandatory mediation law, and the current conditions of the family court house in San Bernardino County are all discussed and examined as supporting evidence to the problem of family visitation. The goal of Keep in Touch is …

Cloud computing, in general, is having an impact on organizations today. Cloud-based email, in particular, is being adopted by educational institutions around the world on a large scale. This paper reports on the state of cloud-based email adoption at higher education institutions in South Africa; it does this by describing the findings of a survey of IT managers at sixteen of these institutions. It will show that South Africa follows the global trend of a large uptake of cloud- based email for higher education institutions. The fact that although organizations are satisfied with the service they receive from cloud-based email …

The Classification Performance Of Multiple Methods And Datasets: Cases From The Loan Credit Scoring Domain, Jozef Zurada, Niki Kunene, Jian Guan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Decisions to extend credit to potential customers are complex, risky and even potentially catastrophic for the credit granting institution and the broader economy as underscored by credit failures in the late 2000s. Thus, the ability to accurately assess the likelihood of default is an important issue. In this paper the authors contrast the classification accuracy of multiple computational intelligence methods using five datasets obtained from five different decision contexts in the real world. The methods considered are: logistic regression (LR), neural network (NN), radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), and decision tree (DT). …

When Google Meets Xiaomi: Comparative Case Study In Western And Eastern Corporate Management, Yu-Feng Lin Lee Jan 2014

When Google Meets Xiaomi: Comparative Case Study In Western And Eastern Corporate Management, Yu-Feng Lin Lee

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Google Inc. of the West and Xiaomi Inc. of the East are recognized as ‘flat organizations’. They exercise ‘flat management’ in their corporate culture, wherein mid-level management is abridged, leaving the corporate structure less-bureaucratic, top-down-and-less-hierarchical, and more laissez-faire. Using the Confucian criteria of Wu Yu, namely morality (or, virtue), intellectual (or, wisdom), physical ability (or, sportsmanship), groupism (or, cooperation), and aesthetics (or, elegance), this paper assesses managerial philosophy and corporate practice of Google and Xiaomi. It is found that under flat management, although each company nevertheless reveals its corporate idiosyncrasy, they achieve business success and sustainability through adopting small-team orientation, …

A Modified Stacking Ensemble Machine Learning Algorithm Using Genetic Algorithms, Riyaz Sikora, O'La Hmoud Al-Laymoun

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

With the massive increase in the data being collected as a result of ubiquitous information gathering devices, and the increased need for doing data mining and analyses, there is a need for scaling up and improving the performance of traditional data mining and learning algorithms. Two related fields of distributed data mining and ensemble learning aim to address this scaling issue. Distributed data mining looks at how data that is distributed can be effectively mined without having to collect the data at one central location. Ensemble learning techniques aim to create a meta-classifier by combining several classifiers created on the …

Entropy Based Feature Selection For Multi-Relational Naïve Bayesian Classifier, Vimalkumar B. Vaghela, Kalpesh H. Vandra, Nilesh K. Modi

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Current industries data’s are stored in relation structures. In usual approach to mine these data, we often use to join several relations to form a single relation using foreign key links, which is known as flatten. Flatten may cause troubles such as time consuming, data redundancy and statistical skew on data. Hence, the critical issues arise that how to mine data directly on numerous relations. The solution of the given issue is the approach called multi-relational data mining (MRDM). Other issues are irrelevant or redundant attributes in a relation may not make contribution to classification accuracy. Thus, feature selection is …
