Do Venture Capitalists Add Value To Small Manufacturing Firms? An Empirical Analysis Of Venture And Non-Venture Capital Backed Initial Public Offerings, Richard Brown, Dr. James C. Brau Jan 2014

Do Venture Capitalists Add Value To Small Manufacturing Firms? An Empirical Analysis Of Venture And Non-Venture Capital Backed Initial Public Offerings, Richard Brown, Dr. James C. Brau

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Venture capital funding of young and high-risk companies is a topic of great interest to both finance practitioners and researchers. A venture capitalist gives funds to privately held companies in hopes of earning a high return on the investment. Venture capitalists also provide more than money: they are viewed as sources of expert advice, both in the industry that the new firm is in, and in the various stages of developing a company. In return for their services, venture capitalists receive equity positions in the monitored firm that potentially offer enormous monetary rewards.

Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2014

Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Here we are once again at the most important weekend in American sport. The Super Bowl is Sunday and that means that Americans across the land will create scenes reminiscent of Thorstein Veblen’s classic, The Theory of the Leisure Class. Veblen’s original vocabulary describing the rich of the late 19th century is as appropriate now as it was then. Such phrases as “conspicuous consumption,” “conspicuous waste” and “conspicuous leisure,” seem to have been coined for the Super Bowl.

The Impact Of Chinese Reunification On Hong Kong’S Future Economic Development, Anthony Lam, Dr. Bryan Sudweeks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Asia suffered a devastating blow to its economy in February of 1997 with the Asian Financial Crisis. The Asian Tiger economies fell to currency speculation and bank debt, beginning with Thailand. Hong Kong, one of the premier business centers in Southeast Asia, was also adversely affected through trade effects. That same year, on July 1, Hong Kong ended its ninety-nine year term as a colony of the United Kingdom and returned to Chinese rule. The “one country, two systems” policy was put in place to ensure Hong Kong’s continued success. Hong Kong would remain a democracy but be part of …

Delay Discounting Affects Entrepreneurial Intention And Action, Tyson Barrett Jan 2014

Delay Discounting Affects Entrepreneurial Intention And Action, Tyson Barrett

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Delay discounting impacts every decision a human makes when given the option of a sooner or a later receipt of a reward. This tendency results in individuals giving up bigger, later rewards for smaller, sooner ones. However, individuals differ in their level of discounting according to their innate tendency and the situation. For example, some individuals naturally discount future rewards more, resulting in preferring even smaller rewards sooner. Because delay discounting affects such a broad spectrum of decision making, the authors hypothesized that delay discounting affects when, or if, an individual intends on starting a business. If an individual starts …

September 11, 2001: How Did The Airlines Account For This Tragic Event?, Terry H. Jackson, Dr. Ted Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

September 11, 2001 will be a day long remembered by Americans and for people around the world. The destruction to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon not only led to the loss of many lives, but these events also affected our economy in a dramatic way. Many industries have been affected by the terrorist attacks, but the industry that has been most directly affected is the airline industry. On the balance sheet, American Airlines and United Airlines only lost two used airplanes each. However, cancelled flights, a decrease in demand for flights, lawsuits, and increased security costs have lead …

Factors Influencing The Growth And Development Of Nicaraguan Small Businesses, Seth Sunderland, Dr. Ted Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The term “small business” is relative to who is applying the term. The United States Small Business Administration classifies any business with 1 to 499 employees as a small business. In 1999 the Peace Corp issued a study on Nicaraguan businesses that defined small businesses as employing 1 to 20 employees. The same Peace Corp study found that 79 percent of Nicaraguan labor force is employed by businesses employing 20 or less people. The Peace Corp also found that only 13 percent of the Nicaraguan labor force works for a business that employs more than 100 people. These numbers indicate …

The Securities and Exchange Commission requires companies to file special reports, called Form 8-K reports, within five to fifteen days of important events that could affect shareholders’ investment decisions. For example, required filings include announcements of events such as mergers and acquisitions, changes in auditors, changes in top management, and other events the filing company deems important to investors. Companies file these reports under nine different item headings. Item Five is the only disclosure that is “optional,” and the nature of Item Five disclosures allows them to contain an array of information and diverse types of information. Electronic copies of …

The Causes Of The Increase Of Tax Evasions In Moldova, Natalia Virlan, Dr. Gary Mckinnon

Since then until the present time the tax evasion by physical and juridical persons has not stopped or decreased, and the government does not know when it will.

Cost-Effective Service Recovery: Knowing Which Customers To Keep, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristie Seawright Jan 2014

Cost-Effective Service Recovery: Knowing Which Customers To Keep, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristie Seawright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Service failures are inevitable. When firms fail to deliver a service as promised, customers will generally be dissatisfied. Such customers will not likely do business with the company in the future. Some companies may shrug their shoulders and look for new customers. However, research shows that in many cases it is considerably more profitable for a company to keep customers who have experienced failures than to try to find new customers. Service recovery is anything companies do to recover the satisfaction and loyalty of customers who have experienced a service failure.

Is Corporate Rebranding A Double-Edged Sword? Consumers` Ambivalence Towards Corporate Rebranding Of Familiar Brands, Grace Ing Phang

Asia Marketing Journal

Corporate rebranding has been evident in the qualitative corporate rebranding studies as an imposed organizational change that induces mixed reactions and ambivalent attitudes among consumers. Corporate rebranding for the established and familiar corporate brands leads to more ambivalent attitudes as these companies represent larger targets for disparaging information. Consumers are found to hold both positive and negative reactions toward companies and brands that they are familiar with. Nevertheless, the imposed change assumption and ambivalent attitude, in particular corporate rebranding, have never been widely explored in the quantitative corporate rebranding studies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive empirical examination of …

Exploring The Role Of Preference Heterogeneity And Causal Attribution In Online Ratings Dynamics, Wu Jin Chu, Min Jung Roh

Asia Marketing Journal

This study investigates when and how disagreements in online customer ratings prompt more favorable product evaluations. Among the three metrics of volume, valence, and variance that feature in the research on online customer ratings, volume and valence have exhibited consistently positive patterns in their effects on product sales or evaluations (e.g., Dellarocas, Zhang, and Awad 2007; Liu 2006). How Much Change Is Optimal When A Brand Is Newly Rebranded?, Kyoung Hee Chu, Doo Hee Lee, Min Sun Yeu, Park

Asia Marketing Journal

There are many cases of rebranding and its numbers are growing. However, rebranding is still under research in the academic field, and there is no guideline on the effective way to change brand name. The objective of this paper is to integrate two inconsistent predictions from categorization theory and schema incongruity theory: a negative linear relationship (categorization theory) versus an inverted-U-shape relationship (schema incongruity theory) between brand name incongruity and consumer evaluation into one framework. Specifically, this study examines how the effect of incongruity between an existing brand name and a new brand name (hereafter called “brand name incongruity”) on …
