Private Equity Firms' Reputational Concerns And The Costs Of Debt Financing, Rongbing Huang, Jay R. Ritter, Donghang Zhang Feb 2014

Private Equity Firms' Reputational Concerns And The Costs Of Debt Financing, Rongbing Huang, Jay R. Ritter, Donghang Zhang

Faculty Articles

A popular view is that private equity (PE) firms tend to expropriate other stakeholders of their portfolio companies. Bonds offered during 1992-2011 by companies after their initial public offerings (IPOs) do not reflect this view. We find that yield spreads on bonds offered by PE-backed companies are on average 70 basis points lower, holding other things constant. We also find that PE-backed companies have more conservative investment and dividend policies after bond offerings compared to non-PE-backed companies. These results suggest that PE firms’ reputational concerns dominate their wealth expropriation incentives and help their portfolio companies reduce the costs of debt.

Stock Market Overreaction And Unnecessary Risk, Todd M. Yost, Dr. Steven Thorley Feb 2014

Stock Market Overreaction And Unnecessary Risk, Todd M. Yost, Dr. Steven Thorley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The original hypothesis behind this study was that the stock market would overreact to news events. So when positive news about a specific company develops the stock price would increase more than would be rational. Conversely when the news was negative the price would decrease more than is warranted. To test the hypothesis, I took several trials consisting of the best and worst performers from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq stock exchange. I then followed the stock prices for several weeks to see if the price adjusts to reflect the real value of the information.

Stakeholders Management In The Indian Construction Industry: Insights Into The Approach At Larsen & Toubro’S Construction Division, Shashank Shah Feb 2014

Stakeholders Management In The Indian Construction Industry: Insights Into The Approach At Larsen & Toubro’S Construction Division, Shashank Shah

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This case study is comprised of an interview with Dr. Anumolu Ramakrishna, former Deputy Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T), India. Dr. Ramakrishna oversaw the construction of major infrastructure projects and the ensuing expansion of L&T into overseas markets through the formation of international joint ventures. He stressed that the success of these undertakings was largely due to the acknowledgement that one company is simply a microcosm of the global market and without inter-personal collaboration, cooperation, integration of development, mutual understanding, and employment of others’ skills ‒ all in concert with the natural environment ‒ a company’s success …

The System Has A Hole In It: Why Leaders Don’T Follow Their Heroes’ Examples, John Renesch Feb 2014

The System Has A Hole In It: Why Leaders Don’T Follow Their Heroes’ Examples, John Renesch

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Despite good intentions, leaders’ desires to follow and implement the teachings and actions of their heroes often become empty promises and meaningless platitudes. Without commitment to intentionally leading by example, workers remain uninspired and organizations decay. To create a more conscious company and functional enterprise, true leaders embrace risk and all of its consequences.

Exploring The Relationship Of Ethical Leadership With Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Laurie A. Yates Feb 2014

Exploring The Relationship Of Ethical Leadership With Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Laurie A. Yates

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The impact of ethics on recent leadership practices has assumed a prominent role in both practical and theoretical discussions of organizational leadership successes and failures. A leader's ability to affect followers' attitudes and behaviors is important in this pursuit because it can result in greater job performance (Tanner, Brugger, Van Schie, & Lebherz, 2010). Ethical leadership may provide an effective approach for fostering positive employee outlooks and actions. Employees respond positively to the ethical leader's principled leadership, altruism, empowerment, and reward systems, suggesting that improved employee attitudes and work-related behaviors may follow (Brown & Trevino, 2006).

Three established measures of …

Leadership Trails: Lessons From The Lakota Sun Dance, Daniel P. Modaff Feb 2014

Leadership Trails: Lessons From The Lakota Sun Dance, Daniel P. Modaff

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This essay argues that while having a vision as a leader is important, that often means that the future is afforded more value than the past and the present. The past demonstrates the leadership trails, or the evidence for what has and has not worked for the organization as the leaders and members enact the leadership vision. Here I offer a leadership model that embraces leadership trails, one based on a decade of research on traditional Lakota life, particularly their most sacred ceremony, the Sun Dance. The Lakota-based leadership model consists of six elements: mitakuye oyasin (“we are all related”), …

Report On Status Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans (Buruli Ulcer), David R. Nielsen, Dr. Warner Woodworth

Journal of Undergraduate Research

First discovered in 1947 in a small community in Australia, the Buruli Ulcer (Mycobacterium Ulcerans) has become the third largest mycobacterial disease in the world, next to leprosy and tuberculosis. Dobos et al. estimate that the severity of the Buruli Ulcer will soon reach that of leprosy. In a 10-year study conducted in Ivory Coast, villages were surveyed to assess the degree of infection. In some communities, the rate was shown to be as high as 16%, with current estimates as high as 22%.

The Economic Development Of Laos And Its Future Membership In The Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Sean C. Luangrath, Dr. Stanley E. Fawcett, Brent D. Wilson Feb 2014

The Economic Development Of Laos And Its Future Membership In The Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Sean C. Luangrath, Dr. Stanley E. Fawcett, Brent D. Wilson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1997, Laos was admitted into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This membership in a free-trade area has accelerated Laos’ economic growth but only to a certain extent—free trade is limited to only Southeast Asian countries. The two main economic groups in Southeast Asia are the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Many people argue that these associations are too bureaucratic and protectionalistic to be effective. How has Laos benefited since its admission into ASEAN in July 1997? Should Laos pursue membership in APEC? How economically effective is APEC? What are …

The Effects Of Extreme Market Volatility On Option Trading, Bradley D. Heitmann, Dr. Steven Thorley Feb 2014

The Effects Of Extreme Market Volatility On Option Trading, Bradley D. Heitmann, Dr. Steven Thorley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An in-depth understanding of financial-markets volatility and how it relates to option prices is of prime importance for any options professional. Volatility is a key variable of the various option-pricing models, the Black-Scholes model being the most widely applied, that have evolved over the past twenty years. Volatility can be thought of as the standard deviation of return for the prices of the asset underlying an options contract. Generally speaking, volatility is positively correlated with options prices. This is fairly intuitive, for a long position in an option is a position with limited downside risk and unlimited upside potential. If …
