Firm As A Coordination System: Evidence From Offshore Software Services, Kannan Srikanth, Phanish Puranam Jul 2014

Firm As A Coordination System: Evidence From Offshore Software Services, Kannan Srikanth, Phanish Puranam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To examine what, if any, are the differences in how activities are coordinated within versus between firms, we conducted interviews with 32 project managers regarding 60 projects in the offshore software services industry. Uniquely, our projects were sampled along two dimensions: (1) colocation versus spatial distribution and (2) delivery by groups of individuals from a single firm versus from multiple firms. Our evidence suggests that in colocated projects, the same broad categories of coordination mechanisms are used both within and between firms. However, there is a qualitative difference in how geographically (i.e., spatially) distributed projects are coordinated within versus between …

Conservatism And Equity Ownership Of The Founding Family, Shuping Chen, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng Jul 2014

Conservatism And Equity Ownership Of The Founding Family, Shuping Chen, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate the impact of founding family ownership on accounting conservatism. Family ownership is characterised by large, under-diversified equity stake and long investment horizon. These features give family owners both the incentives and the ability to implement conservative financial reporting to reduce legal liability and mitigate agency conflicts with other stakeholders. Since CEOs can have different incentives towards conservatism, we focus on ownership of non-CEO founding family members in our investigation. We find that conservatism increases with non-CEO family ownership, supporting our prediction. This relationship becomes insignificant in family firms with founders serving as CEOs, either due to founder CEOs' …

Decomposition Analysis Of Income Inequality In Eastern Visayas, Philippines, Moises Neil V. Seriño

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study aimed to explore and decompose income inequality in Eastern Visayas, Philippines into the following factors: location (urban-rural), age, educational attainment, and sources of income using expenditure and income approach for 2000 and 2006. Inequality in the region remains high but tends to diminish mildly. Using decomposition analysis, results revealed that inequality is mostly explained by the within-group inequality component. When decomposing inequality by income source, results showed that total inequality is largely influenced by wage income while income from agricultural sector contributed the least share to total inequality. In addition, an increase in wage income will further aggravate …

The sample consists of 309 non-financial firms listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) over the time span of 2002 to 2010. The study uses several proxies for corporate governance mechanisms such as percentage ownership held by directors, institutional investors, and five largest shareholders, the existence of audit committees and a measure of concentration of ownership. To avoid omitted variable bias, the study also controls for all well-known determinants of corporate cash holdings (market to-book ratio, growth, size, leverage, R&D investments, cash flow …

The Construction Of Spatial Imaginaries: Luxury, Spectacle, Cosmopolitanism, And The Formation Of The Casino-Resort, Robert Miller Jul 2014

The Construction Of Spatial Imaginaries: Luxury, Spectacle, Cosmopolitanism, And The Formation Of The Casino-Resort, Robert Miller

Occasional Papers

This paper examines Monte Carlo in the late-nineteenth century and Las Vegas in the mid-twentieth century, and explores how the cities forged specific identities centered upon their casino-resort industries. Civic planners, entrepreneurs, and tourists contributed to the formation of a spatial imaginary (the conception of a place, laden with symbols and infused with meaning designed to evoke certain feelings or experiences, which is also mediated and re-mediated through the imagination) in these gambling centers. Casino-resorts came to dominate the economies of these cities and casino-concessionaires, business bureaus, and elites consistently emphasized the luxuriousness, spectacle, and cosmopolitanism of their casino-resort towns. …

Precarious Work Undermines Decent Work: The Unionized Hotel Workers’ Experience, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper determined the drivers and impact of precarious work on the hotel workers and their unions. Based on the proposition that precarious work undermines decent work, a descriptive study with the use of the survey method among 93 respondents from 12 unionized hotels was undertaken. Results showed that the main reason that drives the hotel management to resort to precarious work practices is to lower expenses or costs for salaries and benefits and increase profit. Precarious work has also significantly weakened the union as an organization since their membership continues to decline and their source of fund is reduced. …

Linking Property Rights And Capital Accumulation In The Philippines, Mark Anthony M. Velasco

This study investigates the link between property rights and capital accumulation in the context of poverty alleviation in the Philippines. Property rights are represented by the provision of land titles to those informal settlers while capital accumulation is concretely manifested through access to credit. The study focuses on explaining how provisions of land titles to the poor affect their access to credit and therefore improvement in life conditions. A former community of informal settlers in the City of Taguig, Philippines was chosen in the study to shed evidence using a case study design. Remarkably, the results signify notable relationship between …

Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas Jul 2014

Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Management practice has been evolving from a very rigid and behavioristic practice into something more flexible and humanistic. Critical Management Studies (CMS) is, partly, inspiring such move. In the same vein, I attempted to combine and “mutually animate” Management by Objective (MBO) popularized by great management guru Peter Drucker and the Theory of Communicative Action (TCA) by Jurgen Habermas. The result of which is a novel management theory called “Converlogical” (Conversational/Dialogical) Management Theory. I used concept analysis and deductive approach on various materials to build the theory. The whole MBO process was animated by embedding the validity claims of Habermas’ …

Towards A Common Good Model Of The Firm, Benito L. Teehankee, Luisito C. Abueg, Mariel Monica R. Sauler

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Business schools that have joined the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) are committed to develop teaching tools and to research on frameworks that can help orient business students towards becoming more socially responsible. The tendency of self-interested models of economics, such as the standard textbook profit maximizing model of the firm, in promoting selfinterested behavior among students has been revealed by research. It becomes important, therefore, to develop models of the firm which are more socially oriented. The paper presents a baseline model of the firm which incorporates the provision of living wages and benefits for the employees of …

Women Empowerment Through Social Initiatives: An Indian Story, Divya Singhal

DLSU Business & Economics Review

It is now proven that the relationship between business and society is integral in the success of any enterprise. With the growing role of business in society, organizations are becoming more “socially responsible” and engaging in various social initiatives. Organizations involve themselves in various kinds of initiatives generally targeted towards a selected underprivileged section of the society or a specific area like education, health, and environment. Women play an important role in building sustainable development. Promoting women empowerment and widening their contribution in decision-making roles are key strategies for sustainable development. The present paper is an attempt to highlight women …

Human Asset Accounting And Measurement: Moving Forward, Brian Stanko, Thomas Zeller, Matthew F. Melina Jul 2014

Human Asset Accounting And Measurement: Moving Forward, Brian Stanko, Thomas Zeller, Matthew F. Melina

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Changes in the accounting profession and in the way organizations are managed and operated over the past several decades have led to the identification of a new factor that makes up a substantial part of the value of an organization: human capital. The value that employees add to organizations, however, has been difficult to measure because of the many elements that comprise it and aspects of human nature and free will that are involved. Many models have been proposed to capture the value that organizations gain from employees, but none have succeeded in full. Additionally, strict financial reporting regulations would …

Impact Of Component Supplier Branding On Profitability, Stefan Worm, Rajendra K. Srivastava Jul 2014

Impact Of Component Supplier Branding On Profitability, Stefan Worm, Rajendra K. Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, many business-to-business (B2B) component supplier (CS) firms have added branding to their marketing toolbox. By extending the logic of ingredient branding to B2B components, they aim to create “pull” from B2B end customers by building a strong CS brand image among their customers' customers. In contrast with the established “push” approach of building strong relationships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), it is unclear whether and under which conditions CS branding is a worthy strategy. On the one hand, anecdotal evidence suggests that suppliers can leverage strong CS brand image in negotiations with increasingly powerful OEMs to enhance …

Within-Person Variability In Job Performance: An Integrative Review And Research Agenda, Reeshad S. Dalal, Devasheesh P. Bhave, John Fiset Jul 2014

Within-Person Variability In Job Performance: An Integrative Review And Research Agenda, Reeshad S. Dalal, Devasheesh P. Bhave, John Fiset

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although both researchers and practitioners know that an employee’s performance varies over time within a job, this within-person performance variability is not well understood and in fact is often treated as error. In the current paper, we first identify the importance of a within-person approach to job performance and then review several extant theories of within-person performance variability that, despite vastly different foci, converge on the contention that job performance is dynamic rather than static. We compare and contrast the theories along several common metrics and thereby facilitate a discussion of commonalities, differences, and theory elaboration. In so doing, we …

Are Public-Private Partnerships A Healthy Option? A Systematic Review., Jens K. Roehrich, Michael A. Lewis, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Governments around the world, but especially in Europe, have increasingly used private sector involvement in developing, financing and providing public health infrastructure and service delivery through public–private partnerships (PPPs). Reasons for this uptake are manifold ranging from rising expenditures for refurbishing, maintaining and operating public assets, and increasing constraints on government budgets stifle, seeking innovation through private sector acumen and aiming for better risk management. Although PPPs have attracted practitioner and academic interest over the last two decades, there has been no attempt to integrate the general and health management literature to provide a holistic view of PPPs in healthcare …

The Image Of Psychology Programs: The Value Of The Instrumental-Symbolic Framework, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens, Britt De Soete, Nele Libbrecht, Eveline Schollaert, Dimphna Baligant

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As competition for funding and students intensifies, it becomes increasingly important for psychology programs to have an image that is attractive and makes them stand out from other programs. The current study uses the instrumental-symbolic framework from the marketing domain to determine the image of different master's programs in psychology and examines how these image dimensions relate to student attraction and competitor differentiation. The samples consist of both potential students (N = 114) and current students (N = 68) of three psychology programs at a Belgian university: industrial and organizational psychology, clinical psychology, and experimental psychology. The results demonstrate that …

Duopolistic Competition Under Risk Aversion And Uncertainty, Michail Chronopoulos, Bert De Reyck, Afzal Siddiqui Jul 2014

Duopolistic Competition Under Risk Aversion And Uncertainty, Michail Chronopoulos, Bert De Reyck, Afzal Siddiqui

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A monopolist typically defers entry into an industry as both price uncertainty and the level of risk aversion increase. By contrast, the presence of a rival typically hastens entry under risk neutrality. Here, we examine these two opposing effects in a duopoly setting. We demonstrate that the value of a firm and its entry decision behave differently with risk aversion and uncertainty depending on the type of competition. Interestingly, if the leader’s role is defined endogenously, then higher uncertainty makes her relatively better off, whereas with the roles exogenously defined, the impact of uncertainty is ambiguous.
