Assessing Children's Programs In Country Clubs: A Case Of A Midwest Country Club In The United States, Xiaoying Song Jul 2014

Assessing Children's Programs In Country Clubs: A Case Of A Midwest Country Club In The United States, Xiaoying Song

Open Access Theses

Memberships in private clubs have been declining over the past several years due principally to economic downturns, the overbuilding of golf courses, and aging members. Several suggestions have been implemented to solve the problem, but without any positive effect. Recent studies have indicated that emphasizing family and developing children's programs could be the answer. However, issues related to children's programs in this setting have received limited research attention. This study develops an evaluation process to measure the performance of children's programs in country club settings. A mixed-method case study approach was used to collect and analyze data from a Midwest …

Field To Flight: A Techno-Economic Analysis Of Stover To Aviation Biofuels Supply Chain, Amanda C. Bittner Jul 2014

Field To Flight: A Techno-Economic Analysis Of Stover To Aviation Biofuels Supply Chain, Amanda C. Bittner

Open Access Theses

Greenhouse gas emissions have been a growing concern. The transportation sector contributes to one-third of GHG emissions in the United States from fossil fuel burning. The Renewable Fuel Standard set a requirement for 16 billion gallons (ethanol equivalent) of cellulosic biofuels to be used in the market. Aviation biofuels can help to meet both of these problems as well as improve U.S. energy security.

Investment in the biofuel industry carries a lot of risk. The biofuel industry is run by the private sector, but can be incentivized by government. Cellulosic biofuels carry even more risk than first generation biofuels, because …

The Use Of Business Intelligence Techniques In Supply Chain Performance, Jue Gu

Open Access Theses

Who likes data? Businesses are always loyal data followers. Companies analyze various forms of data to maintain businesses and identify their current performance in different areas so they can find business opportunities to improve and obtain more market share in advance (Qrunfleh & Tarafdar, 2012). When Big Data comes to businesses, companies who can take advantage of data the best tend to regularly get more business and customers (Waller & Fawcett, 2013). Collecting, analyzing, and demonstrating data could be essential to a single business, a company's supply chain performance and its sustainability. As an intelligent data processing product in terms …

Systematic Ict Surveillance By Employers: Are Your Personal Activities Private?, Arlene J. Nicholas Jul 2014

Systematic Ict Surveillance By Employers: Are Your Personal Activities Private?, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

This paper reviews the various methods of information and communications technology (ICT) that is used by employers to peer into the work lives and, in some cases, private lives of employees. Some of the most common methods – such as computer and Internet monitoring, video surveillance, and global positioning systems (GPS) – have resulted in employee disciplines that have been challenged in courts. This paper provides background information on United States (U.S.) laws and court cases which, in this age of easily accessible information, mostly support the employer. Assessments regarding regulations and policies, which will need to be continually updated …

The Importance Of Community Resilience: Developing The American Red Cross International Services Department In The New Hampshire Region, Sarah Romac Jul 2014

The Importance Of Community Resilience: Developing The American Red Cross International Services Department In The New Hampshire Region, Sarah Romac

Capstone Collection

Disaster management and humanitarian aid organizations have had to reevaluate how communities and individuals can better adapt and prepare for future disaster events. One concept organizations are incorporating into their overall framework is strengthening community resilience. Increasing a community’s resilience level increases its ability to cope with the changes that affect it. Creating awareness of the vulnerabilities in an area, addressing these vulnerabilities with preparedness training, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and sustainable changes made over the long-term can develop a community’s adaptive capacity to be more resilient.

For my practicum, I was given the opportunity to be the International Services …

Resolution Of Bad Loan Problem: Bank-Level Evidence From A Low-Income Country, Abu S. Amin, Lucy Chernykh, Mahmood Osman Imam Jul 2014

Resolution Of Bad Loan Problem: Bank-Level Evidence From A Low-Income Country, Abu S. Amin, Lucy Chernykh, Mahmood Osman Imam

WCBT Faculty Publications

How do banks resolve a severe bad loan problem in a capital-constrained, low income country when a government bailout is not an option? We address this question by examining new evidence of a sharp decline in bad loan ratios in a panel of domestic banks in Bangladesh. On the aggregate level, the share of nonperforming loans in this market has dropped six fold, from above 41% in 1999 to below 7% in 2010. Notably, this dramatic improvement did not involve the creation of any centralized asset management facilities but relied on the bank management and governance reforms. We find that …

Real Smiles Vs. Faked Smiles: How Emotional Labor Impacts Service Behaviors, Anita Whiting Jul 2014

Real Smiles Vs. Faked Smiles: How Emotional Labor Impacts Service Behaviors, Anita Whiting

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study investigates how emotional labor impacts service behaviors. Unlike previous research which focuses predominantly on the customer’s experience during a service encounter, this paper focuses on service employees and their performance during the service encounter. In particular, this study looks at how the emotional labor strategies of surface acting and deep acting impact customer service, job performance, and job satisfaction. The results from the SEMPLS analyses show that (1) surface acting has a negative impact on customer service and job satisfaction and (2) deep acting has a positive impact on customer service, job performance, and job satisfaction. Overall, the …

Investigating The Nba Servicescape: Fan Involvement, Team Loyalty, Perceptions Of Atmospheric Music And Emotional Responses, Crystal Southall, Richard Southall

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Within the domain of entertainment and leisure services, sport is a unique experiential service-product. Further, sport consumer behavior has changed dramatically, as advances in technology have decreased barriers to and increased the scope of sport consumption. Sport consumers can now watch live, delayed, or recorded sport events when and where they choose. Therefore, sport organizations must focus on sustainability through the creation of a competitive advantage in the staging of live sport events. Given that the NBA product is consumed within an increasingly stimulating consumptive landscape (Andrews, 2006), this study sought to examine the relationship between NBA fans’ involvement, home-team …

Acquiring And Maintaining Premium Seat Customers In The “Big Four” Leagues, Peter J. Titlebaum, Ronald Dick, Kim Feldmann, Robert Davis Jul 2014

Acquiring And Maintaining Premium Seat Customers In The “Big Four” Leagues, Peter J. Titlebaum, Ronald Dick, Kim Feldmann, Robert Davis

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The sports industry in the United States will bring in an estimated $400 to $425 billion in 2011 (Plunkett Research, Ltd, 2011). Of the overall revenue, $10 billion is derived from premium seating. Unlike general admission and television revenue, income from premium seats is not usually shared with other teams in the league (Miller & Washington, 2010). Premium seating revenue makes a significant contribution to the overall revenue stream of sports organizations. In the 2010-2011 seasons, there were a total of 12,527 luxury suites across all the professional sports venues within the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), …

Is Earnings Guidance A Treacherous Servant?, Thomas A. King Jul 2014

Is Earnings Guidance A Treacherous Servant?, Thomas A. King

Student Scholarship

In the wake of Enron-era scandals, some practitioners argue that earnings guidance ("management expects the firm to earn between $0.95 and $1.05 per share") invites dysfunctional behaviors as executives scramble to achieve previously announced targets. Guidance advocates counter that earnings forecasts simply reduce investor uncertainty. Quantitative analyses have not settled the matter. This qualitative study uses interviews of financial executives at 31 U.S. companies to explore how guidance influences managerial experiences. Primary findings are that executives fear credibility loss from reporting financial results that vary from guided estimates and that anxiety increases as guidance horizons stretch into the future and …

Playing To Win: Dynamics Of Teams That Innovate, Suzanne Piotrowski Jul 2014

Playing To Win: Dynamics Of Teams That Innovate, Suzanne Piotrowski

Student Scholarship

Innovation is critical for establishing and maintaining competitive advantage for today's organizations. The majority of organizational innovation occurs within teams established for the specific purpose of creating novel products and services. Innovation team research to date has focused largely on top-level management teams instead of on the teams within the organization charged with the task of innovating. As organization leaders seek better ways to initiate, develop and sustain innovation capabilities within their organizations, research on such teams has grown. To date this research has attended to elements of creative, learning and other knowledge creation processes. In contrast, relatively little attention …

A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham Jul 2014

A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Distributive fairness, procedural fairness, and interactional fairness are often researched together in many previous studies. However, in order to explore the power of fairness, the second-order fairness needs to be created to find the way to customer loyalty. An online survey was developed and distributed in Vietnam. Seven hundred fifty-eight questionnaires were completed and analyzed using a two-step methodology (including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling). The results of the study showed that there is the domino effect to customer loyalty, which departs from fairness, with trust and customer satisfaction as two mediators.

The Philippine Cybercrime Prevention Act Of 2012: To Protect Or Destroy?, James Keith C. Heffron Jul 2014

The Philippine Cybercrime Prevention Act Of 2012: To Protect Or Destroy?, James Keith C. Heffron

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Relatively new breeds of technology-related felonies called “cybercrimes” have proven to be a bane to different sectors of society, especially to business. The glaring damaging effects that it has caused to different business industries cannot anymore be ignored. However, is the Philippines adequately protected? Are its present laws sufficient to tackle the prongs of this blight? On the contrary, are these laws too myopically focused on eliminating cybercrime that certain freedoms have been overlooked, or worse, compromised? The aim of this paper is to essentially give an overview of the current protection and its effects on our basic rights. A …

A Conceptualization And Empirical Examination Of The Effects Of Marketing Alignment On Franchising Relationships, Joseph Matthes Jul 2014

A Conceptualization And Empirical Examination Of The Effects Of Marketing Alignment On Franchising Relationships, Joseph Matthes

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Franchising is a widely utilized business format that continues to grow in popularity both domestically and abroad. Through the recruitment of franchisees as agents, franchisors are able to access additional resources and rapidly expand their networks. The marketing relationship between franchising partners presents unique opportunities and challenges due to this captive and codependent channel structure. In order to fill a gap in the literature and better understand franchisee-franchisor relationships, the author conceptualizes marketing alignment as being comprised of both agreement and cooperation across the dimensions of strategies, operations, and values. A conceptual model is developed that addresses the following research …

The Dynamic Relationships Of Work Affect And Job Satisfaction With Perceptions Of Fit, Allison S. Gabriel, James M. Diefendorff, Megan M. Chandler, Christina M. Moran, Gary J. Greguras Jul 2014

The Dynamic Relationships Of Work Affect And Job Satisfaction With Perceptions Of Fit, Allison S. Gabriel, James M. Diefendorff, Megan M. Chandler, Christina M. Moran, Gary J. Greguras

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study assessed the longitudinal relationship between perceived fit (i.e., person–organization fit, person–job fit) and affect-based variables (i.e., job satisfaction, negative affect, positive affect) using momentary (i.e., within-person level) and stable (i.e., between-person level) assessments of both sets of variables. In doing so, we tested 3 theoretical models of the perceived fit and work affect relationship (i.e., fit preceding affect; affect preceding fit; reciprocal fit–affect relations) to determine (a) the antecedents and consequences of fit perceptions, (b) whether fit perceptions exhibit meaningful within-person variability, and (c) if direct fit perceptions are simply the result of affect/job satisfaction at work or …

Dynamic Pricing In The Singapore Condominium Market, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu Jul 2014

Dynamic Pricing In The Singapore Condominium Market, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Dynamic pricing strategies are likely an important consideration of Singapore condominium developers because of the durability of condominiums, price transparency, and the long sales period. While we do not observe any systematic relationship between the new sale prices and time of purchase, we do find that quality-adjusted price increases and the quality of units purchased decreases over the new sale period. These results suggest that condominium developers allow early buyers to purchase high quality units at discounted prices but do not extend the price discount to later buyers of low quality units. Tool Choice For E-Learning: Task-Technology Fit Through Media Synchronicity, Jun Sun, Ying Wang Jul 2014

Tool Choice For E-Learning: Task-Technology Fit Through Media Synchronicity, Jun Sun, Ying Wang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

One major challenge in online education is how to select appropriate e-learning tools for different learning tasks. Based on the premise of Task-Technology Fit Theory, this study suggests that the effectiveness of student learning in online courses depends on the alignment between two. Furthermore, it conceptualizes the formation of such a fit through the lens of Media Synchronicity Theory: each type of learning tasks in the online environment require a certain level of media synchronicity, and various e-learning tools enable different levels of media synchronicity. Their alignment forms along two dimensions of media synchronicity: the purpose dimension ranging from conveyance …

Managerial Expertise, Corporate Decisions, And Firm Value: Evidence From Corporate Refocusing, Sheng Huang Jul 2014

Managerial Expertise, Corporate Decisions, And Firm Value: Evidence From Corporate Refocusing, Sheng Huang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates how managerial expertise—specifically, industry expertise—affects firm value through divestiture. Using CEOs’ managerial experiences in industries throughout their careers as a measure of their industry expertise, I find that CEOs in diversified conglomerates are more likely to divest divisions in industries in which they have less experience. This finding is consistent with CEOs who divest such divisions in order to refocus on those divisions in which they have specialized—that is, to achieve a better match between their expertise and their firms’ retained assets. Firms that divest for a better CEO-firm match experience significant improvements in operating performance, as …

Impact Of Social Media On Power Relations Of Korean Health Activism, Kyu Jin Shim Jul 2014

Impact Of Social Media On Power Relations Of Korean Health Activism, Kyu Jin Shim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This case study explores how the Korea Leukemia Patient Group (KLPG) uses social media in its internal communication strategy and how that empowers its relationship with external counterparts. The findings of this study indicate that the local health NGO’s communication strategy is changing in response to the increased effectiveness and impact of social media. With the use of social media like Twitter, the KLPG can construct an issue-based advocacy group quickly and effectively. Consequently, more legitimacy and representativeness through collected support from general publics has further empowered the KLPG. Yet, the sustainability component in the relationships built through social media …

An Empirical Examination Of The Moderators Of Direct Versus Indirect Comparative Advertising, Chun-Kai Hsu Jul 2014

An Empirical Examination Of The Moderators Of Direct Versus Indirect Comparative Advertising, Chun-Kai Hsu

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This research examines the relative effectiveness of different kinds of comparative advertising. The effects of direct and indirect advertising are discussed and empirically tested. Extant research focuses on the differential effects of comparative and non-comparative advertising. However, with the growing popularity of comparative advertising in recent years, it becomes crucial to examine different kinds of comparative advertisements more closely to provide guidelines to marketing managers in the application of comparative advertising. In the marketing literature, very little has been known about how advertising-specific moderators may influence the effectiveness of direct and indirect comparative advertising. In this dissertation, different advertising-specific moderators …

The Antecedents And Effects Of Strategic Caring: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Thomas Weber Jul 2014

The Antecedents And Effects Of Strategic Caring: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Thomas Weber

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study develops a new construct, strategic caring, defined as actions taken by top managers within stakeholder relationships to improve the well-being of both the stakeholders and the firm. This construct is based on a review of the multidisciplinary caring literature from which a definition of individual caring was developed through content analysis, and then subjected to conceptual inferences to the organizational level of analysis. Strategic caring focuses on a broad set of firm stakeholders, and this stakeholder orientation suggests that a firm can take actions to improve the well-being of these many stakeholder groups and perform as well as, …
