as of Sept. 30, 2013, which represents 34 percent of

all household financial assets in the U.S.1 The Department

of Labor reported in June 2013 that 88.7 million

Americans have defined contribution plan accounts,

The ownership of copyrights in a faculty member’s copyrighted works has been a source of tension between labor and management for many years, affecting content created for the classroom, for scholarship, and for creative endeavors. Ownership of on-line learning content adds to these tensions and presents a number of important labor-management and pedagogical issues. The legal default rules of copyright provide the starting point for negotiations between labor and management. The uniqueness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities make achieving collective bargaining on these campuses problematic. All but a handful of black colleges are located in the south, a region with a well-established aversion to organized labor. The South’s history of plantation slavery coupled with feudal peonage labor and Big Mule politics is antithetical with notions of fair wages, reasonable benefits and work hours, and safe working environments. HCBE Faculty Presentations

We examine the relation between institutions' investment horizons on firms' financing and investment decisions. Firms with larger short-term institutional ownership use less debt financing and invest more in corporate liquidity. In contrast, firms with larger long-term institutional ownership use more internal funds, less external equity financing, and preserve investments in long-term assets. These results are driven significantly by information, in addition to the long-term demand shock of institutional ownership. We argue that short-term (long-term) institutions collect and use value-neutral (value-enhancing) information.
