Toward Legalization Of Poker: The Skill Vs. Chance Debate, Robert C. Hannum, Anthony N. Cabot

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper sheds light on the age-old argument as to whether poker is a game in which skill predominates over chance or vice versa. Recent work addressing the issue of skill vs. chance is reviewed. This current study considers two different scenarios to address the issue: 1) a mathematical analysis supported by computer simulations of one random player and one skilled player in Texas Hold'Em, and 2) full-table simulation games of Texas Hold'Em and Seven Card Stud. Findings for scenario 1 showed the skilled player winning 97 percent of the hands. Findings for scenario 2 further reinforced that highly skilled …

Gambling Behaviors Of Former Athletes: The Delayed Competitive Effect, Stephen M. Weiss, Sherri L. Loubier

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Gambling behaviors in current athletes, former athletes and non-athletes were examined. Gambling tendencies were determined from participants' responses on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A delayed competitive effect among athletes that might surface in the form of pathological gambling was investigated. To test this novel theory, participants were divided into three groups: athletes who are currently playing sports, former athletes who used to play competitive sports and non-athletes who have never participated in competitive sporting events. A 2 x 3 independent groups AN OVA was utilized comparing SOGS scores across gender and athletic status. The mean score for former …

Beating The Book: Are There Patterns In Nfl Betting Lines?, Michael R. Summers Dec 2012

Beating The Book: Are There Patterns In Nfl Betting Lines?, Michael R. Summers

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Las Vegas sports books provide two even-money bets (not counting commission, or "vigorish") regarding National Football League games- the point-spread between each pair of teams and the total number of points scored by each pair of teams (the "over-under"). Odds makers set the numbers ("lines") for these two bets almost a week in advance of the games, and they may change these numbers throughout the week as new information becomes available regarding the teams or as bettors bet unequally on either side of the line. This study examines whether there are any predictable patterns in the betting lines over the …

Do Job, Age, And Place Of Residence Matter For Gaming Activity? A Study Of The Mid-Colorado River Communities, Wuyang Hu, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Leigh J. Maynard Dec 2012

Do Job, Age, And Place Of Residence Matter For Gaming Activity? A Study Of The Mid-Colorado River Communities, Wuyang Hu, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Leigh J. Maynard

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

A household survey in the mid-Colorado River communities of Laughlin, Nevada and Bullhead City, Arizona examined local residents' gaming activities. A censored regression analysis distinguished between factors affecting gaming participation versus expenditures. Results suggest that gaming behavior can often be predicted with knowledge of individuals' residence, workplace, and other household demographic characteristics. Both local government agencies and casino managers can use the results to make better-informed decisions.

Industry Labor Force Quality: An Investigation From The Customer Service Perspective, Zheng Gu, Ricardo Chi Sen Siu

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

To investigate the labor force quality deficiency in the Macao casino industry, this study conducted a survey among Macao casino guests on their assessment of customer service. The mean scores of different service features were calculated and compared across casinos operated by different casino companies. Furthermore, different service features were examined for their importance to the overall customer satisfaction based on an estimated regression model. The study found that most of the service features were below satisfactory rating, but Wynn Resorts stood out as the top performer among the four gaming companies. An Observation Study Of Chinese Baccarat Players, Desmond Lam Dec 2012

An Observation Study Of Chinese Baccarat Players, Desmond Lam

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The Chinese gaming market, Macau in particular, is one of the biggest opportunities in the world today. Many industry observers have reported a clear interest among Chinese in playing baccarat. Together, VIP and non-VIP baccarat accounted for as much as 85% of Macau's 2005 gross casino gaming revenue. This paper documented and examined the psychology of Chinese baccarat players through a 'non-participatory' observation study. The study discovered some peculiar behaviors about these Chinese gamblers that included a display of high illusion of control. Chinese baccarat players appeared to derive monetary, excitement, entertainment and social values from baccarat gaming. The results …

Formal Rules, Informal Constraints, And Industrial Evolution-The Case Of The Junket Operator Regulation And The Transition Of Macao's Casino Business, Ricardo Chi Sen Siu

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Following the approach of institutional economics to study the interaction between the changing formal rules and the evolving informal constraints, alongside the dynamics leading to industrial evolution, this paper will firstly examine the particular social and economic settings which bring about the informal constraints for the business practice of Macao's casino junket operators, and the feedback from the system which in turn triggered the evolution of the informal constraints since the middle of the 1980s. Extending from our understanding of the custom and practice of this business in the "old Macao". this paper will further discuss the role of the …

Exploring Social Exchange Theory Dynamics In Native American Casino Settings, Deepak Chhabra

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The proliferation of Native American casino (NAC) gambling over the past few decades has generated a concern over the social, economic, and environmental impacts. This study examined the local resident perceptions of casino gambling impacts and their subsequent support for the NACs within the Social Exchange Theory (SET) framework. It further applied a similar framework to the non-NAC settings. While majority of the impact constructs failed to generate support for the NACs in the presence of intervening variables, a significant application of SET appeared among the non-NAC communities. Benefits were found to be significant for facilitating higher levels of support …

Assessing Sports Advisory Services: Do They Provide Value For Football Bettors?, Jerry Fox, Karl J. Mayer Dec 2012

Assessing Sports Advisory Services: Do They Provide Value For Football Bettors?, Jerry Fox, Karl J. Mayer

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study examined the effectiveness of sports advisory services in football betting. Using three different cases with recent data, it compared the actual outcomes of the football games to sports advisory services' predictions in order to test their prediction accuracy for those games. The results showed none of the three data sets exceeded the threshold for profitable wagering. Thus, in football wagering, sports advisory services often fail to achieve their claims of accurate game prediction capabilities. The study suggests that these services may not provide any real advisory value to the sports betting community.

Gambling Alone? A Study Of Solitary And Social Gambling In America, Bo J. Bernhard, David R. Dickens, Paul D. Shapiro Dec 2012

Gambling Alone? A Study Of Solitary And Social Gambling In America, Bo J. Bernhard, David R. Dickens, Paul D. Shapiro

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

In his acclaimed 2000 book Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam documents a disturbing social trend of the broadest kind. Putnam cites a wide variety of data that indicate that over the past fifty years, Americans have become increasingly socially disengaged. In developing this theme, Putnam specifically cites the increase in casino gambling (and especially machine gambling) as evidence in support of his argument. Building on the empirical and theoretical work of Putnam, this exploratory article examines the subphenomenon of "gambling alone" by exploring sample survey data on solitary and social gambling behavior among adults who reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. Specifically, …

Simulating The Effect Of Pay Table Standard Deviation On Pulls Per Losing Player At The Single-Visit Level, Anthony F. Lucas, Ashok K. Singh, Laxmi P. Gewali

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

While holding par constant, changes in the standard deviation of the pay table produced an inverse effect on pulls per losing player (PPLP), across six different virtual slot machines. This result establishes the standard deviation of a game as a crucial determinant of a slot player's experience. Three different single-trip scenarios were examined via computer simulation, with 50,000 players engaging each game. For example, virtual players began with 100 units, terminating play at bankruptcy or 200 units. As players focus on the outcome of single visits, understanding the determinants of PPLP (or time on device) will help management engineer desirable …

Perceived Impacts Of Gambling: Integration Of Two Theories, Deepak Chhabra, Dogan Gursoy Dec 2012

Perceived Impacts Of Gambling: Integration Of Two Theories, Deepak Chhabra, Dogan Gursoy

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study explores the race and educational attainment variations on resident perceptions and support for a proposed casino development. In addition, it investigates the influence of perceived benefits and costs on casino gambling support. The findings indicate that residents who are likely to receive personal benefits from gambling development tend to believe that its socioeconomic benefits outweigh the associated costs. Respondents' race is found to exercise a significant influence on their perceptions of benefits and costs, and casino development support. This study integrates two separate research streams of social exchange theory and social representation theory, and in doing so makes …

The sample consisted of a balanced representation of supervisory and nonsupervisory employees. Supervisors tended to perceive themselves and their managerial style in a much move favorable light than did their employees. Human resource development processes should support managerial styles that facilitate collaborative decision making and participative …

Internal Marketing: An Antidote For Macau's Labor Shortage, Sudhir H. Kale Dec 2012

Internal Marketing: An Antidote For Macau's Labor Shortage, Sudhir H. Kale

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Gaming scholars the world over are in consensus about Macau's bright future as a gaming Mecca. The phenomenal growth in gaming facilities over the last three years has created an acute labor shortage in this Special Administrative Region of China. Moreover, around twenty additional gaming and hotel projects have been committed so far, all slated for completion in the next five years. Expansion on such massive scale will further intensify competition among employers to recruit and retain employees, particularly if the provincial government maintains its current restrictions on importing labor into the region. One, and arguably the only way to …

Players' Pools: A Potential Drain, Charles Carslaw, E.J. Egghart Dec 2012

Players' Pools: A Potential Drain, Charles Carslaw, E.J. Egghart

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Indian casino operators have been seeking ways to operate Nevada style table games within existing laws. Under the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, those casinos that do not have compacts with their states are permitted to operate only Class II gaming operations. In order to enable such casinos to operate table card games which are not backed by the casino, players' pools have evolved in which gaming wins are backed by the players themselves. The operation of players' pool gaming has been subject to a number of uncertainties, and it does expose the casinos to some unusual risks. Indian casinos …

A Profile Of Pro-Union Casino Workers In Northern Nevada, Merwin Mitchell, Yvonne Stedham Dec 2012

A Profile Of Pro-Union Casino Workers In Northern Nevada, Merwin Mitchell, Yvonne Stedham

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Why workers unionize has been a topic of considerable debate for nearly one hundred and fifty years. Research, however, concerning the determinants of voting behavior has primarily been conducted during the last two decades. Up to now, little has been done to evaluate why workers in gaming may be pro-union, anti-union, or ambivalent. Using a data base containing survey data for 237 workers, we find that pro-union workers are less satisfied with a variety of work dimensions and that they feel under more stress than other workers. We also find, contrary to evidence for other industries, that pro-union workers view …

Is Bigness Better In Casino Gaming? Evidence From The Atlantic City Market, Christian Marfels Dec 2012

Is Bigness Better In Casino Gaming? Evidence From The Atlantic City Market, Christian Marfels

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

A simple regression model is developed to test the relationship between casino floor space as an indicator for bigness and selected financial indicators. Based on data from the Atlantic City market the analysis suggests that scale economies can be experienced by bigger casinos when the total costs of the casino/hotel operation per square foot of gaming space are considered. In contrast, the regression evidence does not point to an advantage of bigness with regard to performance indicators of the casino department itself and, again, based on a per-square-foot analysis. Furthermore, it is shown that there exists a systematic tendency for …

The Leader As Moral Agent: Praise, Blame, And The Artificial Person, Joseph Hester, Don Killian Dec 2012

The Leader As Moral Agent: Praise, Blame, And The Artificial Person, Joseph Hester, Don Killian

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The leader as the moral agent can be both a singular and a collective entity. Regardless, that individual or group of individuals must establish and live by a moral paradigm where self-respect and respect for co-workers is paramount. In essence, the moral agent must "lead by example." And it is not simply sufficient to choose the correct pathway but to care about choosing the correct pathway, stripping the decision-making process of disingenuous or superficial motives and injecting heart, concern, and passion for doing what is right.
