Managing Bpo Service Workers In India: Examining Hope On Performance Outcomes, Gwendolyn M. Combs, Rachel Clapp-Smith, Sucheta Nadkarni

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Much attention has been given to the explosion in business process outsourcing (BPO) operations in India. Little concern, however, has been paid to the performance of Indian service workers in these fast-paced and sometimes turbulent environments. Using a sample of 160 service workers from a privately held BPO firm in India, we examine the relationship between Indian service workers’ hope and their performance outcomes. Regression and structural equation model analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between Indian service workers’ levels of hope and their performance. These promising results highlight the importance of measuring and managing employee hope to maximize employee …

Designing A Model Of An Online Business And Writing A Business Plan, Katherine Swick

Senior Honors Projects

The best way to determine the success of a new business is to develop a business plan for the company. The plan will build a foundation for the business and will present all of the potential strengths, issues, and strategies that may be used and faced. The plan acts as a calling card for the company, while allowing the entrepreneur to see the business through an investor’s eyes. It should be completed in a way that is presentable, understandable, and encouraging to the investor who is considering helping in your venture. It is also a decision tool for the entrepreneur …

To Inspire Social Change, Talk And Transfer Knowledge, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

To Inspire Social Change, Talk And Transfer Knowledge, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

It often takes courage, not to mention, a thick skin, to challenge tried traditions and social norms. Not only do social entrepreneurs have to convince people to move away from their comfort zones, they have to inspire and assure them that the hassles of adapting to change will be of good worth. Lives will be inconvenienced, and not everyone will appreciate the efforts of even the most well-intentioned “change maker”. Powerful bureaucrats may also view social entrepreneurs as troublemakers. Yet, despite much adversity, success stories exist. Three accomplished regional social entrepreneurs shared their accounts at a recent panel discussion.

Aksarben: Boutique Hotel, Nicole Elam May 2010

Aksarben: Boutique Hotel, Nicole Elam

Interior Design Program: Terminal Projects

The Project Intent

At the height of its time, Aksarben was the best place in omaha to go for entertainment and social gatherings. The large space allowed for many events such as concerts, world championships, road shows, and the most popular, horse races. Unfortunately in the 1990s, there was a decline in such attractions, particulary in horse racing, and Aksarben’s ownership went to Aksarben future trust.

Today, developers are using this historical essence to reclaim the once thriving area and bring it back to what it used to be with new current trends.

I propose to take the currently vacant …

Junior Mints And Their Bigger Than Bite-Size Role In Complicating Product Placement Assumptions, Stephanie Savage May 2010

Junior Mints And Their Bigger Than Bite-Size Role In Complicating Product Placement Assumptions, Stephanie Savage

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This thesis examines the various complications of product placement within television given the general assumption that it always paid for as a means of advertising. Using the popular television sitcom Seinfeld and the infamous 1993 episode, “The Junior Mint,” as an example of non-paid product placement, it is herein argued that the use of this practice should be examined on an individual basis. Furthermore, this thesis seeks to clarify the misassumptions that most people have by arguing against critics who, in defining product placement, often fail to mention any instances in which it is not paid for. Various examples of …

Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander May 2010

Capacity-Driven Pricing Mechanism In Special Service Industries, Lijian Chen, Suraj M. Alexander

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

We propose a capacity driven pricing mechanism for several service industries in which the customer behavior, the price demand relationship, and the competition are significantly distinct from other industries. According our observation, we found that the price demand relationship in these industries cannot be modeled by fitted curves; the customers would neither plan in advance nor purchase the service strategically; and the competition would be largely local. We analyze both risk neutral and risk aversion pricing models and conclude the proposed capacity driven model would be the optimal solution under mild assumptions. The resulting pricing mechanism has been implemented at …

“Don’t just sell yourself and your ideas; sell the concept of public relations as a top management function – then prove that it works.” This quote by John W. Felton, retired vice president for corporate communications at McCormick & Company, Inc, expresses the notion that organizations should not consider public relations an afterthought to management processes. Public relations should be an essential concern in all top-level management decisions. The Public Relations Society of America defines public relations as “a management function that involves counseling at the highest level and being involved in strategic planning for the organization.” Others define the …

The Financial Crisis 2010: The Role Of The Shadow Banking System, John Grogan May 2010

The Financial Crisis 2010: The Role Of The Shadow Banking System, John Grogan

Business/Business Administration

The financial crisis of 2008 was the result of a number of factors affecting the global economy. Although the problems originated with subprime borrowers and the fear of loan defaults, several other factors contributed to the crisis. The Federal Reserve, rating agencies and the shadow banking system played significant roles in the 2008 collapse. The shadow banking in particular affected the financial crisis in unprecedented ways that magnified the problem and created a global credit crisis. The government sponsored entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made loan guarantees and involved themselves in other questionable practices that the American taxpayers have …

Exploring Social Constructions Of Followership: A Qualitative Study, Melissa K. Carsten, Mary Uhl-Bien, Bradley J. West, Jaime L. Patera, Rob Mcgregor

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

This study adopts a qualitative approach to deconstruct the meaning of followership. Interviews were conducted with employees in various industries to examine how individuals socially construct their roles as followers and to explore followership schemas and contextual influences that relate to these constructions. Results suggest that while some individuals socially construct definitions around passivity, deference and obedience, others emphasize the importance of constructively questioning and challenging their leaders. With regard to personal qualities that are thought to make followers effective, major themes such as obedience, expressing opinions, and taking initiative were found to be most disparate across different groups of …

This article examines the U.S. response to global terrorism and its campaign in Afghanistan from 2001 to today. The aim of this article is first to understand the fallacies, missteps, and misunderstandings of the U.S. approach in Afghanistan. Second, the analysis evaluates the lessons learnt and some possible strategies for achieving long-term stability and security in Afghanistan. In particular, the analysis focuses on the different strategies adopted by the United States and their achievements. Despite a first victory over the Taliban regime, the initial approach was focused on the enemy only and it lacked long-term planning, paving the way to …

This study attempts to identify the types of pharmaceutical companies that utilize university employees as directors on their boards and if in fact having university connections on a pharmaceutical board impacts company performance. Board-level data from 2009 and firm-level data from 2008 was gathered for 109 pharmaceutical companies that varied greatly in size and geographic location. The key findings of this study were that the larger the pharmaceutical company and the greater the R&D expense of that company the more likely the company would have university connections on its board of directors; the larger the company, the better the universities …

Many students who arrive at Syracuse wish they knew more of the “inside scoop” in all aspects of the university. With the advent of Web 2.0, the Internet is now mainly dominated by social networking services. The formation and success of companies like Facebook, CollegeHumor, and Twitter show the extent to which students are connected constantly via the Internet throughout the day. One of the key problems with these large websites, such as Facebook and CollegeHumor, is the disconnect between the user and his community. These websites are successful on a large scale, but the niche small scale must be …

Corporate Personhood, Cash's Corruption, And The Role Of Public Relations Leadership, Joonas Niiholm

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The role of the corporation in today’s society is complex and significant. This paper examines the evolution of the corporation from a narrowly constructed entity to that which resembles a human being in behavior, as a result of social construction. By examining the actions of a corporation through the lens of a human, it hopes to shed light on the profound impact corporations have on our society and the devastation they cause when operating in pursuit of profit above all else. Drawing on current research of Corporate Social Responsibility, a new way to do business that resembles the way an …

The Process Of Starting A Business, Joyce Aparicio May 2010

The Process Of Starting A Business, Joyce Aparicio

Honors Scholar Theses

Many students are inspired to start their own business venture after taking some courses in school or simply just taking an idea and turning it into a business. The beginning process is usually most difficult in terms of establishing a functioning business, getting the right connections, and avoiding discouragement to follow through with the business. That is why many businesses fall into the categories of starting, failing along the process, or failing to get started. There is a lot to be learned from the process of starting a business venture.

In addressing this issue, some of the questions this research …

Social Media Marketing: Gaining A Competitive Advantage By Reaching The Masses, David J. Perdue

Senior Honors Theses

Social media marketing involves the use of online social media tools—such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn—to reach consumers in innovative ways. Given the increasingly large numbers of consumers using social media, businesses of all types are getting involved in social media in an attempt to reach new audiences and strengthen their ties with existing customers. However, the magnitude of resources available and the potential consequences of a failed social media marketing campaign have left many companies in a state of uncertainty. How can a company develop a social media marketing strategy that will prove successful in the long run? Instead …

Transnational Integration Regimes As Development Programs, Laszlo Bruszt, Gerald A. Mcdermott May 2010

Transnational Integration Regimes As Development Programs, Laszlo Bruszt, Gerald A. Mcdermott

Faculty Publications

In drawing on recent advances in international and comparative political economy, this paper argues that diverging paths of institutional development among emerging market democracies are driven by the Transnational Integration Regimes (TIRs), in which a country is embedded.

As development programs, TIRs differ in their effectiveness not simply in terms of their incentives and largess and more in terms of their emphasis on building institutional capacities, empowering a variety of domestic state and non-state actors via multiplex methods of assistance and monitoring, and their ability to merge monitoring and learning at both the national and supra-national levels. We develop a …

Museum Collections Management Systems: One Size Does Not Fit All, Elana C. Carpinone

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Collections management software companies claim their product can be used for any type of collection or museum. While this is true to some extent, in actuality, they are better suited for some types of collections and do not cover the others as well. Particular collections management databases have aspects that are better suited for certain types of collections and an individual museum's needs. Each system's particular combination of features and characteristics may make it a better fit for some museums' needs and not for others. Recommendations for collections databases are constantly sought after on the American Association of Museum's Registrar's …

North Korea And Support To Terrorism: An Evolving History, Bruce E. Bechtol, Jr.

Journal of Strategic Security

The DPRK's (Democratic People's Republic of Korea or North Korea) support for terrorism began as an ideologically-based policy financed by the Soviet Union that eventually led to a policy designed to put money into the coffers of the elite in Pyongyang—in short, a "proliferation for hire" policy. This article articulates a brief history of the North Korean regime, the rise to power of Kim Il-sung and his son, Kim Jong-il, and North Korea's persistent support to terrorist groups around the globe.

The Multiple Faces Of Effective Grand Strategy, Bryan N. Groves May 2010

The Multiple Faces Of Effective Grand Strategy, Bryan N. Groves

Journal of Strategic Security

Effective national leaders throughout history have deliberately developed grand strategies and successfully implemented them to attain their political goals, while also integrating and accomplishing economic, social, defense, and sometimes religious objectives. Not all leaders have been successful, however, as this process is immensely complex and can be adversely affected by the actions of other leaders around their region and the world. It bears examination, then, to determine what factors contribute to successful grand strategies and why many leaders fail to reach their stated ends. This article utilizes a historic case study approach and explores three key areas of grand strategy: …
