Market-Based Asset Management And Shareholder Value: Investigating The Roles Of Human Capital And Factor Markets In Maximizing Returns On Customer Relationships, Chad Milewicz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The accountability of marketing investments continues to be a key area of concern for researchers and practitioners (MSI Research Priorities, 2008). In particular, market-based assets, specifically customer relationships, and their potential impact on firm performance are a significant source of interest. Though research in this area continues to grow, little is understood about how investments in human capital and the acquisition of alliance partners through factor markets relate to customer relationship management and the impact of customer relationships on performance. This dissertation presents two studies which, together, investigate how investments in market-based assets influence on abnormal stock returns. In the …
Two Essays On Screening Strategies, Rajani Ganesh Pillai
Two Essays On Screening Strategies, Rajani Ganesh Pillai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Consumers form consideration sets by screening from all available alternatives. Consumers typically utilize one of two types of screening strategies: an exclusion screening strategy wherein alternatives not worthy of further consideration are rejected or an inclusion strategy wherein worthy alternatives are selected for further evaluation. Extant literature has documented the important role played by screening strategies in decision making. However, there is very limited understanding of when and why consumers may employ one screening strategy over the other as well the impact of the screening strategy for decision accuracy. This dissertation attempts to study the antecedent and consequence of screening …
Two Essays On Satisfaction, Vishal Bindroo
Two Essays On Satisfaction, Vishal Bindroo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays that study the relevant boundary conditions to the relationship between the customer satisfaction and loyalty. Retaining current customers is critical to a firm's performance and has been well-established in the literature. Extant literature tells us that loyal customers are typically less price sensitive, spend more than non-loyal customers, less expensive to retain, and more importantly, provide new referrals through positive word of mouth. In the first essay, drawing from decision justifiability theory, I posit that consideration set size and price-consciousness moderate the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty. At higher levels of consideration set sizes, …
An Investigation Of Scholar-Baller And Non Scholar-Baller Division I Football Student-Athletes' Academic, Athletic, Intrinsic Motivation And Athletic Identity, Janet Rasmussen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As less than 3 % of student-athletes go on to play sport professionally, it is important that they are prepared for careers outside of athletics (Susanj & Stewart, 2005). Many football student-athletes have low grade point averages and graduation rates. Universities incorporate academic motivational programs to help combat low academic performance. One unique program, Scholar-Baller, utilizes popular culture within its curriculum to bridge the gap between academics and athletics. This dissertation examined the differences between Scholar-Baller and Non Scholar-Baller Division I football student-athletes' motivation (academic, athletic, intrinsic) and athletic identity using expectancy-value theory and self-affirmation theory as its framework. In …
Understanding The Antecedents And Consequences Of Sales And Use Tax Policy: Evidence From Three Studies, Amy Hageman
Understanding The Antecedents And Consequences Of Sales And Use Tax Policy: Evidence From Three Studies, Amy Hageman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three separate but interrelated studies examining the antecedents and consequences of sales and use tax (SUT) policy. The first study investigates whether elements of the SUT system influence elements of economic development, and tests whether SUT rates and/or bases influence state-aggregated levels of capital expenditures and employment within the manufacturing sector from 1983-2006. Results indicate that elements of the tax base (i.e., SUT exemptions) affect these indicators of economic development, but the same relationship was not seen for SUT rates. The second study examines individual taxpayer compliance across different tax settings (i.e., the state use tax …
Critical Reviews And Market Performance, Elena Pomirleanu
Critical Reviews And Market Performance, Elena Pomirleanu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Firms invest significant resources to improve the quality of their products but also to communicate to consumers about their efforts. However, information regarding quality of product offerings is now increasingly being generated by short or long term users of products or services. The growing popularity of critical reviews has prompted attention from both academics and practitioners alike. Current academic findings do not seem conclusive with respect to the impact critical reviews have on product performance on the market. The current dissertation aims to clarify the role critical reviews have in relation to economic outcomes such as sales, category market share, …
Impact Of Returns Policies And Group-Buying On Channel Coordination, Thanh Tran
Impact Of Returns Policies And Group-Buying On Channel Coordination, Thanh Tran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the role of two marketing practices—returns policies and group-buying services—in improving channel coordination. The first study (presented in Chapter Two) focuses on the interaction between two types of returns policies—returns of unwanted products from consumers to retailers and returns of unsold inventory from retailers to manufacturers. Even without the right to return unsold inventory to the manufacturer, the retailers may accept returns from consumers; by doing so, they benefit from a less pricesensitive market demand, an ability to screen for high-valuation consumers, and a competitive advantage (offering a returns policy makes a retailer more attractive to consumers). …
Strategic Human Resource Management Performance Metrics For Unit-Level Managers: An Exploratory Study Of U.S. Casual Restaurants, Kevin S.W. Murphy
Strategic Human Resource Management Performance Metrics For Unit-Level Managers: An Exploratory Study Of U.S. Casual Restaurants, Kevin S.W. Murphy
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Many restaurant organizations have committed a substantial amount of effort to studying the relationship between a firm’s performance and its effort to develop an effective human resources management reward-andretention system. These studies have produced various metrics for determining the efficacy of restaurant management and human resources management systems. This paper explores the best metrics to use when calculating the overall unit performance of casual restaurant managers. These metrics were identified through an exploratory qualitative case study method that included interviews with executives and a Delphi study. Experts proposed several diverse metrics for measuring management value and performance. These factors seem …
Hotel And Restaurant Entry-Level Job Competencies: Comparisons Of Management And Worker Perceptions, Dana V. Tesone, Peter Ricci
Hotel And Restaurant Entry-Level Job Competencies: Comparisons Of Management And Worker Perceptions, Dana V. Tesone, Peter Ricci
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article presents the findings of a central Florida study of lodging and restaurant managers as well as entrylevel workers who were graduates of hospitality management programs. It provides a theoretical construct as a basis of the methodology employed. The article then reports the findings of perceptions of desired knowledge, skills and abilities, and attitudes associated with entry-level employees. It further compares desired levels of preparation for entry-level positions in the industry as reported by respondents of both groups. Finally, the authors present conclusions and implications for central Florida practitioners and educators.

The Future Of Tourism In Aruba: Part One, Kevin S. Murphy
The Future Of Tourism In Aruba: Part One, Kevin S. Murphy
Dick Pope Sr. Institute Publications
Global issues dominated the discussion at the Aruba Timeshare Association (ATSA) sponsored think tank on visioning the future of Aruba. Global competition, global foreign policy, changing demographics and the global environment emerged as primary concerns by participants at the ATSA event on November 30, 2006. They also expressed major concerns over the lack of public-private cooperation to assist the Aruba tourism industry in addressing the challenges in these areas. Additionally, they also were quick to identify the lack of serious industry-wide leadership in moving the industry's collective level of understanding of these challenges to the next level. While discussion and …
Discounting Works: A Structural Approach To Understanding Why, Robertico R. Croes, Kelly J. Semrad
Discounting Works: A Structural Approach To Understanding Why, Robertico R. Croes, Kelly J. Semrad
Dick Pope Sr. Institute Publications
Hotel managers have long toiled over a course of action that would help them preserve hotel revenue during diminished demand seasons. They have responded to this challenge by discounting hotel room rates to sustain revenue and the means by which they could determine how discounting could increase hotel financial performance. That revenue would otherwise be lost when supply of rooms exceeds the demand. Their need to find a procedure to aid them in solving hotel occupancy problems that threaten that revenue has been a source of discussion throughout the industry. However, most of the studies are more prescriptive and normative …

Stereotypes And Stigmas Of College Athletes In Tank Mcnamara's Cartoon Strip: Fact Or Fiction?, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes (N= 43) regarding stereotypical cartoons about athletes. A qualitative approach, which included a visual elicitation technique, was utilized by administering the Lifestyle Association & Representation of Athletes Scale (LARAS). The LARAS explored participants’ perceptions of the following six specific concepts: a) academic support issues; b) academic progress; c) coaches as educators; d) professional sport aspirations; e) media identities, advertising, and representation; and f) cultural issues and recruiting. Five major themes emerged from participants’ perceptions: Big Sport Business, Athletic Image, College Athlete …
Critical Success Factors In Florida's Bed And Breakfast Industry, Catherine I. Rash
Critical Success Factors In Florida's Bed And Breakfast Industry, Catherine I. Rash
HIM 1990-2015
Florida bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) were surveyed for the purpose of discovering the attitudes, beliefs, and actual behaviors of B&B owners and operators that contribute to an operation’s success. This study had several objectives: 1) to provide an analysis of attitudes and beliefs perceived to be necessary for success and the actual behaviors exhibited by operators based upon their self-definition of success, 2) to collect demographic information from various bed and breakfasts in Florida, and 3) to expand the limited amount of research that has addressed issues in the bed and breakfast industry. Between July 2009 and August 2009, data …
Alliance Paradox: An Empirical Study Of Alliance Portfolio Effects On Customer Service Quality In The U.S. Airline Industry, Zhe Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies the potential paradoxical effects of alliance participation. Over the past two decades, alliance participation has become a popular firm strategy to obtain benefits that are difficult for a firm to obtain on its own. Yet, as firms increasingly participate in alliances, boundedly rational managers may not effectively manage all aspects of alliances to achieve intended alliance outcomes. Paradoxically, alliance participation may cause harm to the participating firms. To unveil an alliance paradox, this dissertation first examined the relationships between alliance portfolio attributes (i.e., alliance portfolio size, multilateral alliances, alliance partner country diversity, and alliance type) and customer …
Essays On Corporate Governance, Minhua Yang
Essays On Corporate Governance, Minhua Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is composed by two essays that explore the changes in corporate governance around the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) 2002. In the first essay, I examine the relation between board structure and compensation as a bargaining game between the board and the CEO. Bargaining game theories describe an endogenous process of determining the structure of director and CEO compensation. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) altered the equilibrium of power between the board and CEO by changing the monitoring role of the board. SOX essentially provides a natural experiment to test how a shock to the bargaining game alters the balance …
An Examination Of An Antecedent And Consequences Of Supervisor Morally Questionable Expediency, Rebecca Greenbaum
An Examination Of An Antecedent And Consequences Of Supervisor Morally Questionable Expediency, Rebecca Greenbaum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Supervisor morally questionable expediency occurs when subordinates perceive that their supervisors engage in morally questionable behavior to expedite their work for self-serving purposes (Greenbaum & Folger, 2008). A supervisor's preoccupation with the bottom-line (Greenbaum, 2007; Greenbaum & Folger, 2008; Wolfe, 1988) is examined as an antecedent of morally questionable expediency. It was hypothesized that subordinates experience deontic reactions (Folger, 2001) in the form of a moral psychological contract violation. Consequently, subordinates were hypothesized to reduce performance, engage in antisocial behavior and supervisor-directed deviance. Survey data from 259 subordinate-supervisor dyads provided general support for this hypothesized model. However, post hoc analyses …
Marketing Partnerships: Impact Of Monitoring Schemes And Cooperative Advertising Agreements, Pavan Chennamaneni
Marketing Partnerships: Impact Of Monitoring Schemes And Cooperative Advertising Agreements, Pavan Chennamaneni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Marketing partnerships may involve either horizontal relationships (e.g., a co-marketing alliance between firms selling different products) or vertical relationships (e.g., between an upstream manufacturer and its downstream retailers). Either type of partnership often includes multiple members and the marketing efforts (e.g., level of advertising) of any member typically affect the profitability of the other members. When selecting their effort levels, however, the individual members of the partnership do not account for such externalities. Consequently, the overall effort on behalf of the partnership is not optimal. This dissertation investigates the value of contractual mechanisms such as monitoring schemes (for horizontal partnerships) …
