The Depiction Of Female Models In Sport Television Commercials In The United States By Degree Of Slenderness: An Appraisal, Robin T. Peterson, Bing Xu, Yam Limbu

This manuscript narrates the results of an examination of the portrayal of the degree of slenderness of female models in sport marketing television commercials in the United States. A visual content analysis was employed to gather and to interpret the data. In turn, the analysis revealed that the commercials utilized substantial numbers of models who were inordinately slender, depicted these models more favorably than they did heavier models, and presented them in a fashion that pointed to superior social status and hierarchy positions.

Differences In Exchange Situations In Fast Moving Consumer Goods' Markets, Rose Leahy

This paper explores the perceptions and the behaviour of consumers in Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ (FMCG) markets, with the objective of determining the nature of exchange in these markets. Adopting a qualitative approach to the research, ten focus groups were conducted among Irish consumers in FMCG markets. Emerging from the research are four dominant exchange situations that exist in FMCG markets. These exchange situations are classified as inconsistent transaction exchanges, distant committed exchanges, opportunistic interactive exchanges and reciprocal interactive exchanges. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been around for roughly 40 years, yet the technology has not been widely implemented. Bar codes currently dominate supply chains as the main method for tracking asset, but RFID has the potential to completely remove the need for bar codes. While bar codes need to be individually scanned RFID tagging allows for instantaneous scanning of complete pallet loads. This drastically reduces the amount of time and labor needed to monitor and track assets throughout supply chains. The purpose of this project was to determine whether it would be feasible for Cal Poly to expand their vineyard from fifteen acres to eighteen acres. There are four major costs associated when establishing a vineyard: plant, vine, trellis system, and drip system. Two suppliers per major cost with the exception of labor were called to determine the best price. Once the costs were determined, they were entered into an Excel spreadsheet in the initial cost outlay of an Enterprise Budget. Nobody likes to be pigeonholed or reduced to a single stereotype. One reason could be because we believe ourselves to be products of multiple stereotypes: a combination of identities, such as "Asian", "female", "lawyer", "Gen X", "Christian", "Chinese", etc. While these labels connect us to like-individuals, they can also carry all sorts of connotations and expectations – positive, neutral and negative. For example, an Asian might be expected to outperform a non-Asian at mathematics because of stereotypes that Asians are mathematically inclined. Will such undue expectations affect the Asian's performance outcome? Research studies point to a 'Yes'.

Is there a scarcity of talents in Asia? While opportunities are abound for businesses in the region, many organisations struggle to find the "right" people to seize those opportunities. Those that do a good job of grooming and retaining their future leaders will find themselves to be in an advantageous position. But why should organisations invest in nurturing their flock when seats to the corner offices are already "reserved" for an in-group of family members, friends, scholars, social elites, etc? This is especially problematic in Asia, where many large organisations are either family-owned or state-owned.

Evidence-Based Instruction: A Classroom Experiment Comparing Nominal And Brainstorming Groups, Lynn E. Miller

Organization Management Journal

Interactive brainstorming groups consistently produce fewer ideas, and fewer high quality ideas, than nominal groups, whose members work alone before pooling their ideas. Yet, brainstorming continues to be regarded as an effective method for enhancing creativity. This paper describes an engaging classroom ‘‘experiment’’ that reliably demonstrates the superiority of nominal over brainstorming groups for generating more ideas. Analyses of data from 105 student groups, collected from 12 classes, show that typical differences between the two group methods are sizable. Beyond lessons about group techniques, this exercise shows students the limits of intuition and the value of evidence-based management practices.

Interculturalism and race relations are becoming more complex as America becomes more diverse. Recent attention focused on universities’ admissions programs aimed at diversifying the student body only convey a segment of campus efforts addressing diversity. Curriculum development initiatives speak to diversity concerns through course topics centered on issues such as race and gender by stimulating conversations among students and the instructor. This article presents two models for integrating dynamic dialogues/conversations about race across academic curricula. The millennial generation of students are digital natives coming to higher education with extensive experience in social media. Business and other organizations are expecting their recruits to have high proficiency in these technologies, too. This article is an overview of the use of the main social media in teaching. Facebook, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, and Second Life are discussed with examples of how they can be used to foster robust collaboration among learners in management education. The movement to richer media such as video blogs (vlogs) is assessed. Caveats for implementing the social media in higher educational settings are noted.

Predicting Hedge Fund Performance With Style, Melvyn Teo

I apply the endogenous benchmark approach to the study of hedge funds. I find that including an investment style benchmark significantly reduces within style correlations in hedge fund residuals. Also, the performance spread between high past alpha t-statistic (a risk-adjusted information ratio) funds and low past alpha t-statistic funds increases dramatically when performance is measured relative to fund investment style. There appears to be valuable information in investment style performance that can aid in fund selection.
