To access the content of digital texts efficiently, it is necessary to provide more sophisticated access than keyword based searching. GeneScene provides biomedical researchers with research findings and background relations automatically extracted from text and experimental data. These provide a more detailed overview of the information available. The extracted relations were evaluated by qualified researchers and are precise. A qualitative ongoing evaluation of the current online interface indicates that this method to search the literature is more useful and efficient than keyword based searching.

The draft Aboriginal Fishing Strategy report is a comprehensive effort to recognise the interests of Aboriginal people in the protection and use of fish resources in Western Australia. It is perhaps the most comprehensive report of its kind in Australia. As this Government moves toward a more integrated approach to the management of fish resources this report is timely, and represents an opportunity to ensure Aboriginal fishing interests are given appropriate recognition in a more holistic approach to ensuring fish stocks are sustained for future generations.

This study was designed to compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of mentoring programs and determine the extent that mentoring programs facilitate employee career development and retention. This study was focused specifically on manufacturing industries of selected standard industrial codes (SIC) in Central Indiana. By identifying the advantages and disadvantages of mentoring programs the researcher was able to recommend that manufacturing industries consider implementing a mentoring program if one is not currently in place. The relationship between ownership structure and capital structure is one of the less understood areas within the corporate finance literature. This study attempts to address this issue within a unique; organizational and institutional framework that may help explain the intricacies of such a relationship. The Chilean corporate scene with its high ownership concentration levels, industrial group structure, and familial control provides a rich testing ground to analyze how ownership variables define a firm's leverage policy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different apparel sizes (apparel sizes smaller than 14 and 14 and larger) on the relationships between appearance management factors and apparel shopping behavior of Caucasian and Asian international females. Appearance management factors were divided into sociocultural factors (media), personal factors, and psychological or behavioral factors. One hundred thirty-eight subjects (75 Caucasians wearing apparel sizes smaller than 14; 17 Caucasian females wearing apparel sizes 14 and larger; and 46 Asian international females wearing apparel sizes smaller than 14) completed a questionnaire, which was designed to measure subjects' appearance management factors …

This study was designed to get at the perceptions concerning risk management effectiveness (RME) of executives serving on and interacting with a risk management committee. And to explore the cultural context, the setting selected was a US subsidiary of a British multi-national company. As will be described below, this study included direct observation by the researcher of a risk management committee meeting as well as pre-committee meeting interviews of executives, including the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, and post-meeting informal discussions with certain executive participants.

This study explores the traditional equipment maintain or replace decision under scenarios of increasing customer expectations, loss due to process deviation, and process drift. Customer expectations are operationalized by tighter product specifications. The Taguchi loss function is employed to estimate the loss due to target deviation. In this paper we characterize the machine drift, uncertainty about future technological change, and the learn-and-break-in process by a generalized Brownian-Motion-Ito-Process. The photolithography process is analyzed in numerous scenarios varying demand, rejection levels, and quality losses.

This study seeks to better define the processes by which poor African Americans on welfare can achieve employment success. Beginning with a conceptual model inspired by the stated goals of workforce programs, the study uses interviews of unemployed and employed African Americans to contest the thrust of workforce efforts by contrasting program goals with the respondents' realities. Hypotheses, stated in terms that can be agreed on by workforce practitioners and their clients, are developed to propose a reconciliation of objectives. These hypotheses therefore form a basis for testing of the relationships by quantitative means in a subsequent research phase.

This qualitative research study was designed to examine eight Roman Catholic parishes to determine both from a pastor's and a parishioner's viewpoint what makes a parish vibrant. The study was able to formulate, test and modify a conceptual model for a vibrant parish. The model demonstrates how the pastoral leadership style interacts with the parish organizational factors to influence parish vibrancy. However, certain parish characteristics can modify parish vibrancy. With the challenges facing the nonprofit sector in the United States--increasing competition, decreased funding sources, and rising demand for services--nonprofit organizations must make significant adaptations to continue playing an effective role in society. One of those adaptations--social entrepreneurship--has emerged as a creative response to the new demands facing nonprofits. This ethnographic study of a nonprofit family services organization investigated how both traditional and social entrepreneurship approaches were used and how the dynamic tension between these differing approaches is balanced. [Excerpt] "On September 18, 2002, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a United States based corporation can be held civilly liable for “aiding and abetting” the internationally recognized human rights violation of forced labor. This case, Doe v. Unocal Corp.1 (Doe II), is significant for its ramifications to human rights litigation in United States courts as well as to future liability for multinational corporations conducting commerce in foreign states. The uniqueness of this case is found in its precedent. No prior federal court has held a corporation liable for human rights violations under the Alien Tort Claims Act. …

Decision-making has been a subject of interest for management scholars since the scientific management era (Wren, 1994). Brockmann and Simmonds (1997) and Guinipero, Dawley and Anthony (1999) studied the link between managerial decision-making and tacit knowledge in the effort to identify important cognitive elements in the day-to-day decision-making processes of firm managers. Despite their bold and innovative aims, however, Brockmann et al. (1997) and Guinipero et al. (1999) were weakened by their fundamental assumption that tacit knowledge is synonymous to intuition, and by inconsistencies in their research goals and methods. This dissertation addresses these shortcomings.

To investigate this topic, we prepared a survey and sent it to the chairs of all 100 Ph.D.-granting economics departments.
