Reactions To Perceived Inequity In U.S. And Dutch Interorganizational Relationships, Lisa K. Scheer, Nirmalya Kumar, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

In an empirical examination of inequity in interorganizational relationships, we found similarities and differences in Dutch and U.S. automobile dealers' reactions to inequity in their relationships with their automobile suppliers. As predicted by equity theory, both positive and negative inequity have detrimental effects on the reactions of Dutch firms. In contrast, U.S. firms do not react negatively to positive inequity; only negative inequity has deleterious effects.

Privacy And Attitudes Towards Internet-Based Selection Systems: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Michael M. Harris, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

This paper examines perceptions of privacy and how they relate to reluctance to submit employment-related information over the Internet. In addition, possible cross-cultural differences between the US and Belgium regarding these constructs and the role of Internet knowledge are investigated. Based on theories of privacy and cross-cultural differences, a survey methodology was applied to test several hypotheses. Results suggest that privacy considerations may affect reluctance to use an Internet-based selection system. Moreover, as expected, some differences were observed between US and Belgian respondents. Respondents possessing a higher self-rated knowledge of the Internet were less concerned that employment-related data submitted over …

Agents in a peer-to-peer system typically have incentives to influence its network structure, either to reduce their costs or increase their ability to capture value. The problem is compounded when agents can join and leave the system dynamically. This paper proposes three economic mechanisms that offset the incentives for strategic behavior and facilitate the formation of networks with desirable global properties.

In the 1890s, British cattle companies drove large herds into the sparsely settled grasslands of Nebraska like an invading army. Immediately, the drovers started killing homesteaders, who were always shot on the homesteader’s land at the plow or mower to clarify that it was the homesteading that was the capital offense. The cattle companies fenced public lands and paid others to file claims on their behalf, all in clear violation of the law but protected because they controlled the courts, bought political influence, and continued to intimidate. Many homesteaders refused to be intimidated. They contested the phony homesteads and testified …

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Hedonic Models Using Traditional And Spatial Approaches, Helen R. Neill, David M. Hassenzahl, Djeto D. Assane
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Hedonic regression analysis of single family homes typically includes structural variables, locational variables and neighborhood quality characteristics. When nearby properties are related, Dubin (1988) reports that error terms are spatially autocorrelated. Estimation methods for these spatially autocorrelated error terms or hereafter, spatial approaches, include maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and kriging techniques such as kriged maximum likelihood estimation (KMLE). Unfortunately these spatial methods require massive computer resources and are limited to significantly fewer observations than traditional ordinary least squares (OLS). This paper investigates the combination of spatial approaches and Monte Carlo analysis, a method that approximates large data sets. A question …

Predicting Cross-Cultural Training Performance: The Validity Of Personality, Cognitive Ability, And Dimensions Measured By An Assessment Center And A Behavior Description Interview, Filip Lievens, Michael M. Harris, Etienne Van Keer, Claire Bisqueret

This study examined the validity of a broad set of predictors for selecting European managers for a cross-cultural training program in Japan. The selection procedure assessed cognitive ability, personality, and dimensions measured by assessment center exercises and a behavior description interview. Results show that the factor Openness was significantly related to cross-cultural training performance, whereas. cognitive ability was significantly correlated with language acquisition. The dimensions of adaptability, teamwork, and communication as measured by a group discussion exercise provided incremental variance in both criteria, beyond cognitive ability and personality. In general, these results are consistent with the literature on domestic selection, …

Singapore’s regionalization program is centred on a number of industrial township developments in China, India and several Southeast Asian countries. These townships are led by Singapore government-linked companies and are premised on the perception that Singapore’s positive reputation with multinational corporations, for efficient industrial infrastructure and stable, corrupt-free administration, will give the townships a marketing advantage. Their progress is a litmus test of Singapore’s ability to export its efficiency in industrial park development and management outside its borders. In between creativity studies of idea generation and knowledge management studies of the codification and transmission of knowledge are a fuller set of cognitive activities, including problem-solving and creative impulses. This paper examines the case of designers in the US videogame industry to develop a set of frames for determining how their ideas come about, how ideas are transformed in the process of product development, and when different models of organizing innovation are efficacious. It is found that different types of creativity are used in game design, that sometimes the individual is more influential, but that in many cases, the …

Asian Hedge Funds: Return Persistence, Style, And Fund Characteristics, Francis Koh, Winston T. H. Koh, Melvyn Teo

This study explores the return persistence properties, styles, and fund characteristics of hedge funds that mainly invest in Asia. We examine, for the first time, a high resolution hedge fund dataset which includes monthly return information as well as detailed fund characteristics data. We find that the returns of Asian hedge funds persist most strongly at monthly horizons to quarterly horizons. This persistence weakens considerably when we lengthen the measurement period beyond a quarter, and does not appear to be due to the imputation of fees or to systematic risk as measured by a simple factor model. To effectively support the empowerment of marginalized and resource-poor communities, the nonprofit sector must not only anticipate, but embrace and support transition of their programs with community partners towards greater autonomy. The aim of this ethnographic inquiry is to create opportunities for social change grantees to reflect on their interactions with their grantors, social change philanthropists, which fund their movement oriented goals of social justice and systemic change. Social change philanthropists turn the traditional, donor-controlled approach to philanthropy on its head by transferring grant-making decisions from the donors to community activist boards selected to reflect the make-up of prospective grant …

A system design game is a model of a situation in which agents’ actions determine the structure of a system, which in turn affects the system’s value and the share of value that each agent may capture through bargaining or market competition. This paper describes a class of games in which agents design interdependent products, for example software programs, which may be complements or substitutes for each other. These relationships are epresented by an object called a design structure network (DSN). I plan to visit other colleges, agriculture businesses, and various other agriculture entities to help update my knowledge and learn about their contribution to the agriculture industry. I have found my schedule of responsibilities at Parkland has kept me so busy that it has been very difficult to adequately keep up to date in our fast changing industry. This leave would allow me to greatly improve my knowledge base for teaching and ultimately my future students will have a better opportunity to learn.

Industry white papers are increasingly being used to explain the philosophy and operation of a product in marketplace or technology context. This explanation is used by senior managers for strategic planning in an organization. This research explores the effectiveness of white papers and strategies for managers to learn about technologies using white papers. The research is conducted by collecting industry white papers in the area of Information System Integration and gleaned relevant information through text-mining tool, Vantage Point.
