Larry Doby: Greatness Overlooked In The Shadow Of Robinson, Richard C. Crepeau

Wednesday evening Larry Doby died at age 79 in Montclair, New Jersey. Thursday afternoon in Yankee Stadium there was a tribute to Lou Gehrig on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Sometimes there is an odd confluence of events, and this is one of them. Although they played in different eras and under very different circumstances Larry Doby and Lou Gehrig shared one characteristic. The exceptional careers of both men were played out in the shadows of those around them.

Examination of leadership characteristics in the context of a corporate restructuring proved to be surprising. Observations and reviewed documentation revealed that no single characteristic of leadership differentiated leaders from managers but rather it is a combination of qualities that make the difference. Emerging themes, together with those theorized in literature, illustrate that although terminology has changed the basic understanding of leadership has not. The ability to challenge oneself personally and professionally remains at the heart of those that lead. The finest leaders of our time--the Jack Welches, and the Lou Gerstners--are all highly energetic individuals that continually challenge the status …

A Mixed Integer Programming Model For Routing Containerships, Ching-Wu Chu, Tu-Cheng Kuo, Jiing-Chang Shieh

In this paper, we formulate a mixed integer programming model for routing containerships. Our model helps in evaluating the optimal sequence of port calls and the number of containers transported between port pairs given the trip cycle time. Some numerical examples and a real world application of the Trans Pacific route are presented. The computational results show that our model, which solve the mixed integer programming optimally, is quite efficient and applicable to real world problem.

Cooperation And Defection In The Commons Certified Local Governments And Historic Preservation Commissions, Brian W. Kenny

Public activities were observed at a Phoenix historic preservation meeting. Subsequent research involved interviewing 4 individuals who told personal stories, recounted opinions, and compared themselves with others in the preservation commons. These actors accept duty because they believe grass roots social and economic activism improves their community's quality of life. Their symbolic interaction at the local scale validates the essential Protestant creation myth of American democracy. Issues of cooperation and defection have applicability to situations where volunteers advise the cultural, environmental, and science sectors of the economy. In the past two months I have come to an entirely new appreciation of intercollegiate athletics. I now see how it serves the aims of higher education and builds character. It is clear that it is not about the money and that coaches are true educators guiding young men and women to a life of the highest ethical and moral standards. I have been wrong and I am willing to stand tall and admit it. This is clearly an institution within the institution of higher learning that is worth protecting, preserving, and cherishing.

The Match Between Ceo And Firm, Sam Allgood, Kathleen A. Farrell

We investigate the role of job-match heterogeneity in the CEO labor market. We document a high percentage of CEO turnovers in the early years of tenure as illustrated by the hazard that increases until the fifth year of CEO tenure and then decreases. Evidence suggests that a good match is more likely if the new CEO performs better than the previous CEO. The best matches tend to occur when inside (outside) CEOs follow previous CEOs who quit (are dismissed). Evidence consistent with match theory in the CEO labor market suggests factors that influence the likelihood of observing a good match.

The second of June is the anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England. On that same day in 1953 news arrived in London that Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit of Mount Everest a few days earlier on May 29th. It seemed like a fortuitous convergence of events celebrating resurgent British Imperial power. In fact it was but an illusion, a false echo of past glory for a fading empire economically drained by the ravages of war.

A dynamic application of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) model was developed to predict annual cycles in animal nutrient requirements and performance of dual-purpose (milk and beef) cows. Interactions from mobilisation and repletion of body tissue reserves and feed biological values are accounted with a time step of one day, which considers physiological status of the animal, variation in dietary composition, and other environmental factors. This outcome was achieved by modifying the input and output structure of the CNCPS version 4.0 to compute body weight and changes in body reserves based on predicted milk production, intake of …

Information technology can facilitate the dissemination of knowledge across the organization- even to the point of making virtual teams a viable alternative to face-to-face work. However, unless managed, the combination of information technology and virtual work may serve to change the distribution of different types of knowledge across individuals, teams, and the organization. Determining the relative priority for research proposals within an agency such as the Department of Fisheries, particularly when they are from different program areas, is a difficult task to achieve effectively. In the context of a policy framework to which there has been long-term political commitment, and having economic growth as its goal, but which has not yielded successful outcomes, this ethnographic study presents the multiple perspectives of a variety of actors in the Jamaican policy space. The participants in the study reflect on the reasons for economic failure, the relationships between the public and private sectors, and what they view as the distance between the articulation of policy and its practice. Digital Divide And Purchase Intention: Why Demographic Psychology Matters, Syed H. Akhter

The author examines the issue of digital divide from a demographic perspective. The influence of gender, age, education, and income on the likelihood to purchase over the Internet is empirically examined. Hypotheses are framed in the context of psychological correlates of the demographic variables. Findings show that these variables significantly influence the likelihood to purchase over the Internet and can be used to profile, segment, and target markets and develop public policies to bridge the digital divide.

Objective: There are many health risks involved with the use of weight loss products by normal weight women. The mass media may compound this problem through the promotion of weight loss products and a thin body size. This study tested women's perceptions of different weight loss product ads to determine if body dysphoria (i.e., an over concern with body size and shape in normal weight people) was associated with risk beliefs, past behaviors, and intention toward using weight loss products.
