Time-Varying Arrival Rates Of Informed And Uninformed Trades, David Easley, Robert F. Engle, Maureen O’Hara, Liuren Wu

CRIF Working Paper series

In this paper we extend the model of Easley and O’Hara (1992) to allow the arrival rates of informed and uninformed trades to be time-varying and forecastable. We specify a generalized autoregressive bivariate process for the arrival rates of informed and uninformed trades and estimate the model on 16 actively traded stocks on the New York Stock Exchange over 15 years of transaction data. Our results show that uninformed trades are highly persistent. Uninformed order arrivals clump together, with high uninformed volume days likely to follow high uninformed volume days, and conversely. A Dynamic Equilibrium Model Of Real Exchange Rates With General Transaction Costs, Gautam Goswami, Milind Shrikhande, Liuren Wu

CRIF Working Paper series

We study the behavior of real exchange rates in a two-country dynamic equilibrium model. In this model, consumers can only consume domestic goods but can invest costlessly in capital stocks of both countries. Nevertheless, transporting goods between the two countries is costly and, hence, the rebalancing of the capital stock can only happen finitely often. We propose a realistic cost structure for goods transportation, wherein the total cost increases with the amount of shipment but the unit cost decreases with it due to economies of scale. This research sought to describe an alternative way for calculating expected back order (EBO) for reparable inventory systems. The high costs associated with reparable items management, together with its importance for system's availability, make the assessment of back orders of great importance in supporting decisions of what-to-buy and where-to-locate those items. Accounting

Environmentally conscious investors require financial information in addition to environmental information to evaluate a company's performance. Sources of such information include organizations that specialize in providing environmental performance data, such as the Council on Economic Priorities (CEP) or the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC). Both of these organizations research, evaluate, and rank companies based on a variety of metrics, and both charge for their service. Through company websites, the Internet offers another potential source of information, since most companies have a "web presence." In March 2002, the WKU University Senate Faculty Welfare & Professional Responsibilities Committee surveyed the Western Kentucky University faculty concerning aspects of their jobs. This study was undertaken, in part, due to concern over the number of faculty leaving the university. Of the possible 614 faculty, 367 responded, making the response rate 59.8%. This report outlines and examines the faculty's responses to the research/creative and service activity sections of this survey as well as the sections dealing with support, salary and healthcare benefits.

The purpose of this ESD policy is to outline a way forward by showing in a practical manner: • how the ESD principles will be interpreted and applied within the fisheries context generally and within the Department of Fisheries specifically, • the conceptual framework that will be used to assess performance against ESD principles, • the methods for reporting on and auditing this performance, and • how these principles and the framework relate to other relevant state, national and international treaties and instruments.

This Management Paper is intended to assist the Executive Director when considering the issuing of authorisations for commercial aquaculture under Section 92 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994; written approvals or written authorities for the translocation of barramundi under Regulation 176 of the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995; and in the development of programs for recreational fishery enhancement of barramundi. It is also designed to provide guidance to the aquaculture industry and recreational fishing groups when considering the farming or stocking of barramundi in this State.

Racial Integration As An Innovation: Empirical Evidence From Sports Leagues, Robert E. Mccormick, Brian L. Goff, Robert D. Tollison

Publications

This paper treats racial integration as an innovation in economic process in which economic entities find it advantageous to utilize potentially more productive inputs previously unavailable due to law, custom, or managerial discretion. Data on the racial integration of Major League Baseball and Atlantic Coast Conference basketball are employed to address this issue. The central question examined is which type of team integrated first—losers or winners? The results strongly support the idea that entrepreneurship trumps competitive rivalry; that is, winning teams led the process of racial integration.
