In 1996 the United States government began a series of lawsuits against the major tobacco manufacturing companies that have resulted in the elimination of major cigarette campaign slogans and/or characters judged to be aimed primarily at children. This action led to numerous state class-action lawsuits costing tobacco companies billions in future revenue. In their suit against tobacco companies, government lawyers successfully argued that tobacco companies had been deliberately marketing a dangerous product to the young. One of the more significant outcomes of this case was the elimination of the popular Joe Camel character.

The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) first brought the attention of the banking industry to the Year 2000 problem in 1996 (Year 2000 Project 1), but the Year 2000 problem originated many years ago. As a result of limited space, programmers in the 1960s and 1970s began using abbrevia· tions and codes to represent longer words, phrases, and numbers (FDIC Consumer News-Fall 1998 2). Since before the end of the Cold War, terrorism acts have had major effects on tourism destinations. As a result, the 'shadowy, mobile, and unpredictable' forces of terrorism are becoming an unfortunate part of the travel and tourism landscape. Few can forget the explosion that killed three in Paris in 1986, the home-made pipe bomb in Tel Aviv in 1990, the November 1997 massacre of 58 tourists at Luxor's Temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian US Embassy truck bombings killing 263 in August 1998. In the early 1990s, there emerged a growing view, popularized through the pages of important research journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society and Critical Perspectives on Accounting, that traditional historical accounting research was in some senses inferior to the new accounting history. The term new accounting history encompassed a number of methodologies designed to produce what has become known as critical accounting history. Among these methodologies, the work of Foucauldians, particularly that of Professors Hoskin and Macve, focuses on areas of particular interest to ourselves. We address their literature in some of our work for the follow­ing interrelated reasons. …

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

We are exploring how ICT use affects the work lives of real estate agents, the process of selling/buying houses and the overall structure of the residential real estate industry. Earlier stages of our work involved intensive field research on how real estate agents use ICT. In this paper, we report on the design and analysis of a pilot survey of 868 agents intended to investigate their ICT use more generally. Analysis of the 153 responses to this survey sheds light on how ICT use supports information control, enables process support, and helps agents to extend and maintain their social capital.

This paper addresses the definition of MIS and the legitimacy of MIS as an academic discipline. Both sides of the MIS legitimacy debate are presented, with the authors embracing the diversity of MIS as a strength that enhances the legitimacy of the MIS discipline. Based on the diversity theory of MIS, the authors propose a new-multidimensional model of MIS that presents a new way of looking at the discipline and the researchers who work in it.
