Journal of International Information Management

An increasing number of corporations are developing and implementing information sys tems (IS) applications which cross national boundaries and span diverse cultures. As a result of the cultural differences, IS developers in different countries may have very different perceptions regarding the objectives of an IS. In the current study, developers from three countries - Japan, Taiwan, and the United States - rated the importance of eight objectives of a successful IS. The eight objectives are categorized by hierarchical levels, and also as short-term or long-term goals. An expert system is proposed to help non-operation research users to formulate goal programs. The developmental tool being used is VP-Expert. The proposed expert system will used constraint information to assist users in goal selection. Goal structure will be constructed using a pairwise comparison technique, similar to the AHP approach.

Tlie efficacy of new policing techniques has called in to question a long held canon of criminologists: that vast social forces (such as poverty, racism and demographics) beyond police control are the primary determinants of criminal activity. A new approach to policing called COMSTAT (computerized analysis of crime statistics) has resulted in a significant reduction in criminal activity within the cities that have adopted it according to FBI Uniform Crime Report data. Cognitive style, measured by Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, was used to categorize decision makers. Information source in the form of different DSS types was provided to help the decision makers make more effective decisions. The research attempted to investigate systematically the effects of cognitive style and DSS usage on the decision maker's perception of risk in the context of capital expansion projects. The research encompassed analysis of behavior under conditions of uncertainty for two values of the cognitive dimension, sensing-intuition (S-N), and use of two types of information sources, data-bases DSS (DBDSS) and model based DSS (MBDSS). The Effect Of Anonymity On Electronic Meetings, Milam Aiken, Carl Rebman

Journal of International Information Management

The use of anonymity has been attributed to be a major factor in the success of electronic meetings, contributing to greater participation, more and better comments, and higher satisfaction. Several studies have attempted to measure its affect on meetings, but none has investigated non-anonymous, pseudo-anonymous, and anonymous treatments in the same experiment. A study using these three types of groups in electronic meetings to discuss a relatively noncontroversial topic revealed no statistically significant difference in the number of comments generated per person, level of process satisfaction, and other self-perceived measures.

In this article the authors develop a functional definition of information which forms the resource base in evolving decision making activities where uncertainty and short time horizons tend to predominate. Academicians and practitioners in the Information Systems (IS) use the IS publications to acquire information about the latest developments in the field. Some publications are harder to understand than others and may not be effective if the reader is not capable of fully comprehending the contents. Therefore, of great consequence is the readability of journals in the field. This paper presents results of a survey conducted to determine the readability of information systems journals based on the Flesch-Kincaid Formula.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software has been implemented by the majority of the large corporations in the world in order to streamline and integrate their internal business processes. The impact of this multi-million, sometimes billion dollar IT investment is mostly measured in terms of ROI, cost savmgs and productivity improvement. However, marketers should not ignore the benefits an ERP system can bring them and their customers. This paper describes five benefits marketers derive from an ERP implementation. These are information availability, streamlined processes, sales force support, strengthened business partners, and support for globalization.

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

A primary objective of sport marketers in the professional sport setting is to develop strategies to increase game attendance. Historically, one of the strategies to accomplish this goal has been the utilization of special promotions. This paper studied the impact of promotions on attendance at professional sport games. Specifically, this research examines (1) the overall effect of promotions on attendance, and (2) the marginal impact on attendance of additional promotional days. Using a data set containing 1500 observations, we find that a promotion increases single game attendance by about 14%. Additionally, increasing the number of promotions has a negative effect …

This article began as a response to an exchange of letters concerning the need for more vs. less user participation in IS projects. It grew into an exploration of whether and how ten 1999 CAIS articles use basic IS/IT terms with different meanings and connotations related to the different perspectives of their authors. The article characterizes differences between an IT perspective and a business perspective and categorizes the ten articles accordingly.
