Nature Tech: A Nascent Ecosystem, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
When people talk about climate tech, they tend to mean carbon tech. It’s all carbon tunnel vision: Carbon footprint, carbon equivalent, carbon credit, carbon compensation, carbon emission reductions, carbon offsets, decarbonization and so on. By extension, the entire debate about energy transition, energy transformation, clean power and green energy is similarly a debate that is largely held within the carbon tunnel. Make no mistake about it. These are important topics to address. The energy transition will not only prevent catastrophic climate change but have massive benefits for human health by tackling fossil-fuel induced air pollution at the source. As the above …

Using An Online Bidding Game To Teach Costing In Management Accounting, Poh Sun Seow, Suay Peng Wong
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper describes an online multi-player game (Bidding Game), which was developed to reinforce the understanding of cost behavior and cost concepts taught in an introductory management accounting undergraduate course. The Bidding Game was motivated by the aim to facilitate active learning as students apply the theories that they have learnt in a fun and interactive manner. The survey results suggest that the game significantly improves students’ perceived knowledge of the costing topic. Students also agreed that the game enhanced their learning and that they had a positive experience playing the game.

The Effectiveness Of Using Python Programming Approach In Teaching Financial Analytics, Clarence Goh, Yuanto Kusnadi, Gary Pan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study presents a learning method and challenges regarding implementing a Python programming approach in teaching financial analytics to graduate accounting students. The advent of Big Data, as well as related applications and technologies, has significantly changed the process and practice of accounting. This has led to essential changes in the construction and teaching content of accounting education. While there have been several studies examining how data analytics is embedded in the accounting curriculum, the majority of the teaching cases in accounting focus on analysis and communication with Excel as the principal tool, with very few covering the necessary steps …

Common Weights Analysis Of Renewable Energy Efficiency Of Oecd Countries, Reza Kiani Mavi, Neda Kiani Mavi, Reza Farzipoor Saen, Mark Goh
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Arising from the recent COP26 climate change conference, many governments have emphasised carbon neutrality targets for environmental sustainability by increasing renewable energy efficiency. This study develops a common set of weights (CSW) model for the additive model in data envelopment analysis using goal programming to analyse the energy efficiency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The CSW model, which has better discrimination power, places Iceland as the most renewable energy-efficient member country in the OECD, followed by Luxemburg and Norway. Our findings suggest that OECD countries should increase their renewable energy consumption and reduce municipal waste …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Over the past 10 years, there have been many financial scandals in the financial advice industry, which has caused substantial losses for investors. Large wealth institutions controlled by major Australian banks have significantly contributed to investor losses by promoting their products which were not always in the best interests of clients. The aim of this study was to explore the factors affecting the current and future growth of small privately-owned financial planning businesses as a competitive marketplace provides better consumer outcomes. The study undertook a qualitative approach using an exploratory research design which involved the recruitment of 51 privately-owned financial …

Unveiling The Process Of Collaborative Learning Through The Use Of Digital Whiteboard Historical Action Logs, Hua Leong Fwa
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many educational institutions to transit from face-to-face to online delivery of lessons. Precluded from meeting face-to-face in a classroom due to pandemic curbs, a digital whiteboard affords both teacher and learners to be collaborating and completing a task from home instead. In this paper, we first used a survey to assess learner’s acceptance and use of digital whiteboard. We next web-scraped and visualized historical action logs recorded by the digital whiteboarding tool to uncover the process of problem-solving between and within the teams. This is significant as social-loafing and free-riding are typically difficult to detect …

Navigating Insolvency Risks In Emerging Markets, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez, Elena Daly
Navigating Insolvency Risks In Emerging Markets, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez, Elena Daly
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Most emerging markets have weak legal and institutional environments that generally lead to low levels of predictability and legal certainty. Moreover, the insolvency framework of most emerging markets is very inefficient, providing creditors with low recovery rates. Therefore, extending credit to companies in emerging economies may result in additional risks for lenders. This article explains how lenders can navigate some of these risks. By doing so, it is expected that, as a result of the higher level of creditor protection, companies in emerging markets will be able to have greater access to finance. Therefore, these strategies can ultimately benefit debtors …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 30, 2022, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N fell by 0.12% in October 2022. The leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic growth six months in the future, has fallen in four of the last six months. Such a decline signals a stagnant economy in Nebraska at the beginning of 2023. Four components of the leading indicator worsened during October. There was an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance, signaling some softening of the Nebraska labor market. There was also an increase in the value of the U.S. Dollar in October. A rising dollar creates challenges for Nebraska businesses that compete in international markets. …

For decades, the real estate industry has relied heavily on traditional marketing methods such as print advertising and cold calling. Although these traditional methods are still used within the industry today, the expansion of the internet over the past few decades has resulted in agents shifting away from older school marketing techniques to digital methods of marketing. This thesis will examine several digital methods of advertising such as social media marketing, email marketing campaigns, web design, and video production. In addition, this thesis will explain why these are the most effective marketing tools and necessary for real estate agents to …

Importance Of Good Communications For Generational Ag Business Transfers, Allan Vyhnalek
Cornhusker Economics
Adapted from Right Risk, volume 10, Issue 10, October 2022.
Effective communication within a farm or ranch family, especially when multiple generations are operating and managing the business, is the underpinning of all other decisions made in a family business. It is critical that farm and ranch families identify areas of contention and develop communication skills that will allow them to negotiate satisfying outcomes. This may involve basic skills training, including communication, problem solving, and decision making.

Employer Development Of Professional Capabilities Among Early Career Workers And Implications For The Design Of Work-Based Learning, Denise Jackson, Hairong Shan, Stephanie Meek
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Professional capabilities, particularly enterprise behaviours, are increasingly sought after in the labour market, enabling new workers to perform effectively in complex and diverse contexts. Capability deficits among new graduates have prompted the growth of work-based learning (e.g., internships) in tertiary programs to better prepare students for transition to work. There is, however, a lack of understanding of how students learn at work, leading to this investigation of employer approaches to capability development among early career workers, including tertiary graduates and youth workers. Survey data were gathered from 306 business owners, managers, and human resource practitioners from diverse organisational settings. Respondents …

Safe Havens In Islamic Financial Markets: Covid-19 Versus Gfc, M. Kabir Hassan, Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Tonmoy Choudhury, Muhammad Kamran
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Using a bivariate dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, this study compares the safe-haven properties of various assets against the major Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock indexes during two periods of financial turmoil, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Sovereign bonds offered the highest hedging benefits under both crises. The traditional safe assets, gold and silver, which were reasonably productive under the GFC, have been less so during the pandemic. The Japanese yen emerged as a very safe choice for investors holding GCC stock indexes. Both sector indexes and stock indexes failed …

The global COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of workers and taken its toll on health and well-being. In line with recent calls for more inductive and abductive occupational health science research, we exploratorily meta-analyzed workers’ COVID-19 distress, defined as psychological and psychosomatic strain contextualized to experiencing the virus and pandemic broadly. We identified many existing COVID-19 distress measures (e.g., Fear of COVID-19 Scale by Ahorsu et al., 2020; Coronavirus Anxiety Scale by Lee, 2020a) and correlates, including demographic variables (viz., gender, marital status, whether worker has children), positive well-being (e.g., quality of life, perceived social support, resilience), negative well-being …

When you consider industries that were reinvented in recent history, you will find companies that continued to morph and remain relevant and viable and those who started off valid and in favor, but alas, perhaps didn’t make the sustainable cut. Consider, for example, Blockbuster Video, they were at the forefront of providing the legal rental of movies using physical media, such as a tape or DVD. They had the opportunity to transition from physical movie rentals to online—they had a customer base and name recognition. Do you see any Blockbuster Video stores around? Chances are you do not, and this …

The degree to which the media report a health emergency affects the seriousness with which the people respond to combat the health crisis. Engagement from local newspapers in the US has received scant scrutiny, even though there is a sizable body of scholarship on the analysis of COVID-19 news. We fill this void by focusing on the Rio Grande Valley area of the US-Mexico border. To understand the differences, we compared such local news coverage with the coverage of a national news outlet. After collecting the relevant news articles, we used sentiment analysis, rapid automatic keyword extraction (RAKE), and co-occurrence …
