The Role Of Accounting In Conservation Impact Bonds: The Case Of Carolinian Canada, Western University, London, Canada, Julie Bernard, Bhavya Vora, Diane-Laure Arjalies

Business Publications

This report begins by highlighting Canada's efforts at biodiversity conservation through various initiatives. Moreover, it underscores the vital role Indigenous communities play in protecting biodiversity and preserving traditional knowledge.

The report investigates the role of Conservation Impact Bonds (CIBs) as a potential solution to the biodiversity loss crisis. The CIB is a new "made in Canada" conservation finance instrument that enables collaboration and investment to manage healthy landscapes in the spirit and practice of reconciliation. The CIB model is a pay-for-success conservation finance mechanism driven by the partnership to reverse the trend of habitat loss by accelerating healthy landscapes, advancing …

Advancing Regenerative Agriculture In Canada: Barriers, Enablers, And Suggestions, J.F. Obregon, M. Aguanno, M. Brooking, Diane-Laure Arjaliès

Business Publications

This report provides a systemic overview of the state and potential future of regenerative agriculture in Canada. Regenerative agriculture consists of farming that supports life on land – e.g., prioritizing soil health, planting native seeds, protecting faunae and flora, or avoiding harmful chemicals. The biodiversity loss and climate crises are realities that hit every Canadian. The impacts of these crises on agriculture are immense: from soil degradation, lower yields and exports, to food safety. Conversely, agriculture has a tremendous effect on biodiversity loss and climate change; as one of the largest carbon emitting sectors nationwide, the industry could contribute more …

International Business Is Contributing To Environmental Crises, Haitao Yu Dr, Pratima (Tima) Bansal Dr., Diane-Laure Arjaliès Jan 2023

International Business Is Contributing To Environmental Crises, Haitao Yu Dr, Pratima (Tima) Bansal Dr., Diane-Laure Arjaliès

Business Publications

All business contributes to environmental crises because of its focus on profit. We argue that international business (IB) contributes more than its fair share. IB's focus on cross-border arbitrage has led to the over-extraction of natural resources and the accumulation of waste. This is a problem, because natural resources are limited in quantity and embedded in their local environment. It is time for IB researchers to step up and substantially and meaningfully address IB’s contribution to environmental crises by embracing the principles of natural systems processes within its core assumptions and improving its theorizing of natural resources. In this paper, …

The Impacts Of Role Overload And Role Conflict On Physicians' Technology Adoption, Eun Hee Park, Ghiyoung P. Im, Jing Zhang, Young Hwan Lee, Kyung Hee Chun, Young Soon Park

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Technology adoption is an important solution for physicians to increase work efficiency, and thus deal with role conflict among their multiple job roles. Prior studies have not investigated how multiple job roles and role conflict influence physicians’ technology adoption intentions. Based on role strain theory and role identity theory, we present a model of physicians’ technology adoption intentions to support their primary (clinical care) versus secondary (teaching or research) job roles. We test the model using surveys with 156 physicians at nine medical schools in Korea. The results of our data analysis largely support our hypotheses. Role overload in each …

The Future Of Enterprise Information Systems, Ali Sunyaev, Tobias Dehling, Susanne Strahringer, Li Da Xu, Martin Heinig, Michael Perscheid, Rainer Alt, Matti Rossi

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] Enterprise information systems (EIS) have been important enablers of crossfunctional processes within businesses since the 1990s. Often referred to as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, they were extended in line with electronic businesses to integrate with suppliers as well as customers. Today, EIS architectures comprise not only ERP, supply chain, and customer relationship management systems, but also business intelligence and analytics. Recently, the move towards decentralized technologies has created new perspectives for EIS. Information systems (IS) research has already addressed opportunities and challenges of these developments quite well, but what will be the pressing opportunities and challenges for …

Irresponsible Contagions: Propagating Harmful Behavior Through Imitation, Andrew Bryant, Jennifer J. Griffin, Vanessa G. Perry Jan 2023

Irresponsible Contagions: Propagating Harmful Behavior Through Imitation, Andrew Bryant, Jennifer J. Griffin, Vanessa G. Perry

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

‘Monkey see, monkey do’ is an old saying referring to imitating another's actions without necessarily understanding the underlying motivations or being concerned about consequences, such as propagating harmful behaviors. This study examines the likelihood of firms imitating and proliferating others’ unethical, irresponsible practices thereby exacerbating harmful effects among even more firms; in doing so, irresponsible contagions can rapidly spread more broadly, negatively affecting even more consumers. Building upon rivalry- and information-based imitation theories, we examine if harmful behaviors of others, in combination with misbehavior of referent firms, influences the likelihood of a firm to engage in irresponsible consumer-related practices. After …

The Role And Potential Of Trusted Change Agents And Freight Demand Management In Mitigating “Panic Buying” Shortages, José Holguín-Veras, Trilce Encarnación, Sofía Pérez-Guzmán, Víctor Cantillo, Oriana Calderón Jan 2023

The Role And Potential Of Trusted Change Agents And Freight Demand Management In Mitigating “Panic Buying” Shortages, José Holguín-Veras, Trilce Encarnación, Sofía Pérez-Guzmán, Víctor Cantillo, Oriana Calderón

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The goal of this research is to help develop effective freight demand management (FDM) programs to reduce the amounts of “panic buying” purchases. Such programs are indispensable because, as explained in the paper, in “panic buying” environments, supply chains are frequently unable to rapidly increase the amounts of critical supplies delivered to points of sales. Thus, reducing the demand is the only option to mitigate shortages. To reach this goal, this research assesses the potential of a novel FDM initiative that relies on Trusted Change Agents (TCAs) to convince individuals to limit their purchases of critical supplies, and outlines a …

What Do Navy Seals And Cpas Have In Common? Mental Toughness., Hugh H. Lambert Jan 2023

What Do Navy Seals And Cpas Have In Common? Mental Toughness., Hugh H. Lambert

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

What do accountants and Navy SEALs have in common? Navy SEALs have the ability to stay awake for a week, endure constant harassment and perform their jobs despite mental and physical hardships. While that may sound similar to final exam week, there is no comparison between college and the physical stress of military training, but there are similarities in the mental aspects. Navy SEALs use certain tools to help them succeed during times of extreme hardship, and accounting students and CPA exam candidates can use these same strategies for success. The tools fall under the broad category of “mental toughness,” …

Our Regrets – Opportunities To Move Forward?, Carol Wittmeyer Jan 2023

Our Regrets – Opportunities To Move Forward?, Carol Wittmeyer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

Many NowGens and NextGens may say, “I have no regrets”. It’s even a favorite tattoo image! Yet, do we have an option to regret regrets? That is, is it acceptable to have and think about regrets as a way to improve our lives and family businesses? The answer is “yes”. Regret is one of the most misunderstood emotions according to Daniel Pink, a New York Times bestselling author. He says that everyone has regrets. And his several research projects on regret suggest that while we cannot unwind the past, studying our regrets helps us to get direction on a life …

Evaluating The Relative Impact Of Multiple Healthy Food Choice Interventions On Choice Process Variables And Choices, Christopher Gustafson Jan 2023

Evaluating The Relative Impact Of Multiple Healthy Food Choice Interventions On Choice Process Variables And Choices, Christopher Gustafson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Fiscal tools—taxes and/or subsidies—are increasingly used to address diet-related health problems. However, some studies have found that these tools are markedly more effective if attention is drawn to the tax or subsidy, suggesting that the price change alone may go unnoticed in the complex food environments that consumers face. Interventions that prompt individuals to consider health during choice show promise for promoting healthy food choices in both simple laboratory settings and complex, real-world markets. In this pre-registered study, I examine the impact of dietary fiber health prompts and/or dietary fiber subsidies on the per-serving fiber content of foods chosen, the …

The Role Of Behavioural Factors And Opportunity Costs In Farmers’ Participation In Voluntary Agri-Environmental Schemes: A Systematic Review, Sergei Schaub, Jaboury Ghazoul, Robert Huber, Wei Zhang, Adelaide Sander, Charles Rees, Simanti Banerjee, Robert Finger

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Agri-environmental schemes (AESs) are increasingly implemented to promote the adoption of environmentally friendly practices by farmers. We use a systematic review to explore the role of behavioural factors and opportunity costs in farmers' decisions to participate in AESs in Australia, Europe and North America. Behavioural factors influence how farmers value and perceive options, while opportunity costs relate to farmers' forgone utility when choosing to participate in schemes. We synthesise insights from 79 articles and over 700 factors explaining the participation in AESs. We find that a set of behavioural factors seem consistently connected to participation, including agricultural training, advice and …
